Formation (Latin: formatio, forming) is the process of exerting permanent influence by a person, group or institution on a person's personality in order to form his or her cognitive and appraisal psychic structures with the internalisation of a system of beliefs and values, and to produce the resulting ability to act in a specific direction. Formation underlies family and school education, as well as all pastoral activities. The goal of formation is comprehensive intellectual, moral and inner development. This article presents John Paul II's proposal in the area of the social formation of young Poles, which was developed on the basis of his speeches delivered during his pilgrimage to Poland.
The article highlights the fact that at the turn of the millennium, John Paul II proposes multiple forms of catechesis. One such form is the World Youth Day, where the Pope in a certain way realises the ultimate goal of catechesis as contained in the experience of the Church, that is, the goal is not only to bring young people to an encounter with Jesus, but also to a union and even a deep intimacy with him. The theology of youth developed, emphasises the truth that man cannot live without love. John Paul II elaborates on his thought that man remains a being incomprehensible to himself, his life is meaningless, if Love is not revealed to him, if he does not encounter Love, if he does not touch it and make it his own in some way, if he does not find a living participation in it. From the analysis of the Message for the Fifteenth World Youth Day, further tasks for the pastoral care of young people arise, in order to give them a space and a time where they can come closer to Christ, assimilate the whole reality of the Incarnation and Redemption.
- ItemLe Giornate Mondiali della Gioventù – i giovani e il beato Giovanni Paolo II(The Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow, 2012) Kiciński, AndrzejMany people say that World Youth Day is Pope John Paul II’s best invention. However, he used to say that it was the young people themselves who invented it. The Pope felt that the Church’s concern for the younger generations should be made known. He issued invitation to young people to come to Rome for Palm Sunday. After two gatherings, at the end of 1985 he announced the institution of the World Youth Day that was to be celebrated every year in the dioceses. The diocesan celebrations were soon joined by international gatherings. The author of this article presents World Youth Day as the Church’s Day for youth and with youth. This idea is not an alternative to ordinary youth ministry, often carried out with great sacrifice and self-denial. Indeed, it intends actually to consolidate this work by offering new encouragement for commitment, objectives which foster ever greater involvement and participation. By aiming to foster greater fervour in apostolate among young people, the Church desires to make them the protagonists of an apostolate which will spread to the other ages and situations of life in the ambit of new evangelization.
- ItemMłodzi nadzieją polskich rodzin w nauczaniu Jana Pawła II(Wydawnictwo Diecezjalne: Sandomierz, 2004) Kiciński, AndrzejThe article analyses John Paul II's homilies and conferences delivered in Poland during papal pilgrimages. The Holy Father showed Polish youth a new perspective of the vocation to love. We also see a papal diagnosis of threats - external and internal - emanating from various distorted and falsified patterns. Analysing all the statements, we can see that John Paul II not only encouraged attempts to talk about multidimensional maturation, but paid particular attention to the necessity of undertaking the toil of self-education.
- ItemTożsamość ludzi młodych w nauczaniu Jana Pawła II podczas pielgrzymek do Polski(Poligrafia Inspektoratu Towarzystwa Salezjańskiego, 2003) Kiciński, AndrzejJan Paweł II podczas pielgrzymek apostolskich do Polski ukazywał katolicką wizję budowania tożsamości młodzieży na kluczowym dla nich etapie podejmowania pierwszych samodzielnych decyzji. Propozycja dotyczyła adolescentów, jak i kolejnych etapów młodości. Papież ukazywał możliwości rozwoju życia duchowego, bez zaniedbywania innych sfer, jak: życie biologiczne, intelektualne czy społeczne. Wskazania świętego Jana Pawła II są aktualne do dziś mimo zmieniających się warunków zewnętrznych. During his apostolic pilgrimages to Poland, John Paul II presented a Catholic vision of building the identity of young people in their crucial stage of life. The proposal concerned adolescents as well as subsequent stages of youth. He indicated the possibilities of developing the spiritual life, without neglecting other spheres: such as biological, intellectual or social life. Saint John Paul II's indications are still relevant today despite the changing external conditions.
