- ItemCritical Edition and Philological Analysis of the Isa 53 Text Based on the Coptic Manuscript of sa 52 (M 568) and Other Coptic Manuscripts of the Sahidic Dialect and the Greek Text of the Septuagint(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Bąk, Tomasz BartłomiejThe article is a critical edition, translation, and philological analysis of the Isa 53 text, prepared on the basis of the Coptic manuscript of sa 52 and other available manuscripts, written in the Sahidic dialect. Its first part outlines general information about the section of codex sa 52 (M 568) that contains the analyzed text. This is followed by a list and brief description of other manuscripts that contain at least some verses from sa 53. The most important part of the article is the presentation of the Sahidic text and its translation into English. The differences identified between the Coptic translation and the Greek Septuagint were presented in a table. It includes, for example, additions and omissions in the Sahidic translation, lexical changes, and semantic differences. The final part of the article aims to clarify more challenging philological issues observed either in the Coptic text itself or in its relation to the Greek text of the LXX.

- ItemElements of Apophatic Theology in the Writings of Elizabeth of the Trinity(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Miczyński, JanThe article is a theological and spiritual reflection on the spiritual doctrine of the French mystic St. Elizabeth of the Trinity OCD (Élisabeth Catez), who lived from 1880 to 1906. The present study seeks to explain the reason why apart from cataphatic (positive) expressions, characteristic of nuptial Carmelite mysticism, which Elizabeth represents, her writings sometimes contain apophatic (negative) expressions, emphasizing the unknowability of God. The historical and literary, hermeneutical, philological and comparative analyses of her work lead to the following conclusions; as a Carmelite she consciously referred to the teaching of the Areopagite (Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite) and to the later continuator of his thought, Bl. John Ruusbroec (Ruysbroeck); however, to apophatic expressions – e.g. infinite, unchanging, inaccessible, indescribable, immovable, inexhaustible, unknown, invisible, incomprehensible, incomparable, elusive – she gave a nuptial tone, for the sake of emphasizing the beauty and poetic nature of the bridal love of God and man. For this reason, Elizabeth does not represent the apophatic trend, but uses its language to emphasize the beauty of God and the poetic character of his relationship with man.

The purpose of this article is to present the most important elements of the teaching of the Pontifi cal Council for the Family on the dignity of the child and its parents in the context of today’s social phenomena and changes, and the actuality of this teaching. To this end, the method used is that of analysing the documents of this Council, and the papal teaching on the subject. It was pointed out that the dignity of the child and its parents is indissolubly linked to respect for the laws governing fertility and to the dignity of the conjugal act. It was also shown that a contraceptive and hedonistic mentality threatens both the dignity of the child and its parents. It was also pointed out that it is necessary to sensitise the scientifi c world to the protection of the personal dignity of every human being and to reach every person with this message, and to try to infl uence a change of mentality. The teaching of the Pontifi cal Council for the Family also implies, as pointed out in the article, the need to treat each person subjectively and not objectively, including their sexual and gender dimensions.
- ItemImplementing the Principle of the Common Good in Classical and Social Enterprises(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Marek, Agnieszka; Kostrzewa, Sylwia; Zadroga, AdamThis publication aims to identify similarities and differences in the ways of implementing the principle of the common good in classical (commercial) and social enterprises. Given the differences between social and classical enterprises in terms of their objectives and modes of action, it has to be stressed that the nature of the contribution they make to the common good differs in terms of subject and object. The research is embedded in Catholic social teaching (CST) because this approach presents one of the theoretically and practically richest theories of the common good, and secondly, it allows to discover modern ways of building the common good while respecting centuries of tradition and referring to philosophical classics. The common good principle in the light of CST lets us focus not only on the material but also the transcendental aims of human work and life which lead to more sustainable management. Commercial enterprises strengthen intellectual capital and expand technological and business knowledge. The profit earned by these companies essentially contributes to the good of society (taxes, investment, charity), including employees (bonuses, training). Social enterprises, on the other hand, have the advantage of investing in social capital and thus building a civil society based on mutual trust and support, especially at a local and institutional level. The profit generated by these organisations is a means to achieve social goals and not an end in itself. The results of our research show that both commercial and social enterprises contribute to common good on their own ways but the best results can be achieved when they cooperate and use all of their strengths for building the better future.
- ItemLending and Borrowing in the Teaching of Sirach (Sir 29:1–7)(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Piwowar, AndrzejAmong the various topics and issues that Ben Sira discusses in his book is the issue of borrowing. The sage covers it in detail and at length in Sir 29:1–7, presenting it not from a financial and economic perspective, but from a sapiential viewpoint, appropriate to the nature of his work. The purpose of this article is to explore Sirach’s teaching on the subject of borrowing and lending of material goods. As a preliminary matter, the issue of borrowing in the setting of the ancient Near East and in biblical Israel is presented in a highly synthetic manner. Next, the boundaries of the literary unit that is the subject of the presented analyses and its structure are defined. In the remainder of the article, the Greek text of Sir 29:1–7 (the Hebrew version of this pericope is not known) is exegetically analyzed drawing on the historical-critical method. The examined literary unit is divided into two main parts. The first is a discussion of the general rules concerning lending and borrowing, i.e. based on the texts of the Torah, the obligation to grant a loan also reminds one of the obligation to return the debt according to the terms agreed upon. The second part of the pericope depicts the difficulties associated with not returning borrowed goods on the part of dishonest borrowers (delay in returning the loan, making excuses, even aggression towards the creditor). Fundamental to the sage’s teaching on the subject of borrowing are the texts of the Pentateuch saying that one should give loans. However, the author is a realist and therefore devotes much of his reflection on the issue to the difficulties involved in returning borrowed goods, with a view to encouraging his disciples to adopt an attitude of prudence and caution lest they suffer the loss of some of their possessions. Yet, despite these risks, he encourages them to support those in need with loans.
- ItemNowoewangelizacyjne głoszenie Dobrej Nowiny(Uniwersytet Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego w Warszawie, 2017) Goliszek, PiotrNowość ewangelizacji to przede wszystkim odnowiona świadomość obowiązku poszukiwania nowych dróg, aby dotrzeć z Dobrą Nowiną do wszystkich ludzi. A novelty to the evangelization is a realization of a need to search for new ways to reach all people with the good news. Neo-evangelical task of catechesis is firstly to ,reveal’ God and His Kingdom but also take responsibility for a man. People still expect effective catechesis that will introduce gospel – the greatest asset into their lives. Catechesis’s main role is to preach and gospel, so everyone can meet Christ and become united. Tere is still need to continue evangelization as catechesis does: preach, form, initiate into evangelical proclamation with all power.
Postępujący proces sekularyzacji staje się zarazem wyzwaniem do głębszej interpretacji współczesnej kultury i znajdowania nowego sposobu i języka przekazu treści ewangelicznych. The present state of moral theology in Poland bears some signs of a crisis, as the number of students of theological sciences is shrinking and the faith, which can give wings to the testimony of theologians, is weakening. The progressive process of secularization becomes at the same time a challenge to a deeper interpretation of contemporary culture and to find a new way and language of conveying the Gospel content. Pope Francis emphasized that theological studies "constitute a kind of providential cultural laboratory in which the Church performs a performative interpretation of the reality that flows from the event of Jesus Christ and which is nourished by the gifts of wisdom and knowledge which the Holy Spirit enriches in various forms the whole people of God." Proper identification of the addressees of the Church's moral message will allow for a better adjustment of the forms of teaching. Theology is to serve the People of God in a deeper experience of faith and to contribute to the ongoing public debate in order to explain the Church's position and to argue moral truths. For this purpose, you also need to use new media that will allow you to reach a wider audience.
- ItemOblicza Boga w chrześcijaństwie starożytnym (XLIX Spotkanie Badaczy Antyku Chrześcijańskiego, Papieski Instytut Patrystyczny Augustinianum, Rzym, 11-13.05.2023)(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Wysocki, MarcinSprawozdanie z XLIX Spotkania Badaczy Antyku Chrześcijańskiego, zatytułowanego "Oblicza Boga w chrześcijaństwie starożytnym", które miało miejsce w Papieskim Instytucie Patrystycznym Augustinianum, Rzym, w dniach 11-13 maja 2023 r. - ItemOjcowie Kościoła w teologii anglikańskiej(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Nowosad, SławomirOd początków swojej eklezjalnej odrębności anglikanizm widział w Ojcach Kościoła „jasne gwiazdy” (J. Jewel), które prowadzą chrześcijanina do prawdziwego zrozumienia słowa Bożego. Ireneusza: gloria Dei vivens homo, vita autem hominis visio Dei. It is in the context of tradition that the Church of England in her major ecclesiastical and theological figures has endeavoured to perceive the Protestant principle of sola Scriptura. Hence, the Fathers of the Church became the “bright stars” to guide Christ’s disciples towards a better understanding of the word of God and towards a more authentic Christian life. Both the Book of Common Prayer and the 39 Articles not infrequently refer to the Fathers to prove the Church of England’s continuity with the early Church. T. Cranmer, R. Hooker and J. Jewel were among those who, against Puritan criticisms, saw as essential the Anglican faithfulness to Church Fathers. J. Cosin, J. Taylor or G. Bull followed their methodology to defend, for example, the episcopal character of the English Church. A new impulse for a return to the Catholic antiquity within the Church of England came from the Tractarians who produced the Library of the Fathers and thus struggled to revive the Catholic faith of their Church, her sacramental and liturgical life. The present-day theologians like, for example, F. L. Cross, R. Williams, S. Coakley, C. Harrison or A. Louth have been those whose fresh efforts attested, though always cautiously, to the ongoing Anglican interests in Christian antiquity. The focus of the final part of the paper is on Bishop K. E. Kirk, the 20-century most prominent figure in Anglican moral theology, whose extensive study in the early Church allowed to demonstrate comprehensively Christian moral life as aimed at visio Dei.
- ItemPersonalistic dimension of ecclesia-forming catechesis(Uniwersytet w Białymstoku, 2023) Goliszek, PiotrThe article addresses the personalistic dimension of the Church’s catechesis presented as a process of including children and young people in the mystery of the Church seen in a personal way, as the Communio Personarum et personarum. The personal view of the Church and the personalistic dimension of ecclesial education in catechesis is intended as a safeguard against understanding and grasping the Church in rheistic, institutional, hierarchical, juridical, and sociological terms. It is also meant to open up to anthropological, personalistic and communal dimensions. A new personal quality and a higher way of existence for the person being catechized as coexistence with Christ should be the most important fruit of a personalistic introduction to the Church. Artykuł podejmuje zagadnie personalistycznego wymiaru katechezy eklezjotwórczej ukazany jako proces włączania dzieci i młodzieży w misterium Kościoła rozumianego osobowo – Communio Personarum et personarum.

Article points to the process of secularization in Malta, which is caused by the impact of Anglo-Saxon culture hostile to the Catholic Church and increased prosperity. The abandonment of religious practice is noted above all in the lives of young people and expresses the rejection of the moral teaching of the Church. The practice of confession in Malta is cultivated by the Church, but the disappearance of the sense of sin has become obvious and stays in crisis. The article describes pastoral initiatives of the Church in Malta to promote the use of the sacrament of penance. To these initiatives include pastoral groups and providing opportunities for confession in different churches. A specific period of confession are the days preceding the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows which is celebrated during Lent.

- ItemPraesentia carnalis Christi. Incarnation Terminology in the Anti-heretical Polemic of Philastrius of Brescia(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Szram, MariuszThe terminology found in one of the oldest Latin catalogs of heresies, Diversarum hereseon liber, written by Philastrius, bishop of Brescia (330-387/388), was adapted to the needs of anti-heretical polemics, and at the same time reflected the way of talking about Christ’s earthly mission, characteristic of the Latin patristic literature of the second half of the 4th century. A detailed philological and theological analysis of Philastrius’s treatise led to the following conclusions: (1) The terminology used by the author was rooted in the early Christian tradition (caro, corpus, incarnatio, incorporatio), but also original through the use of his own formula praesentia carnalis; (2) The vocabulary used in the catalog was strictly dependent on the subject of the doctrinal dispute. In polemics with docetistic heresies, Philastrius used the term caro more often than corpus, describing the body and, indirectly, the entire human nature of Christ. In the discussion with heresies that did not directly address the subject of the body of Christ, and also when presenting the orthodox teaching of the Church on the Incarnation of the Son of God, he used the term incorporatio more often than incarnatio; (3) The favorite phrase used by the Bishop of Brescia to describe the Incarnation was praesentia carnalis Christi. With it, Philastrius emphasized several important aspects of the theology of the Incarnation: the real corporeality of the person of Christ; the presence of the Son of God among people and its salvific purpose; a long process of revealing God to man, related to the Old Testament prophecies, the fulfillment of which was the coming of the Savior to earth. Terminologia występująca w jednym z najstarszych łacińskich katalogów herezji Diversarum hereseon liber Filastriusza, biskupa Brescii (330-387/388), była dostosowana do potrzeb antyheretyckiej polemiki, a zarazem odzwierciedlała sposób mówienia o ziemskiej misji Chrystusa charakterystyczny dla łacińskiej literatury patrystycznej 2. poł. IV wieku.
Florian Pilthowski jako miejscowy wikariusz i jednocześnie oficjał kielecki żyjący w drugiej połowie XVI wieku wykonywał noty marginalne świadczące o wieloletniej lekturze Biblii. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały lekturę większości ksiąg biblijnych. Najczęściej ks. F. Pilthowski sporządzał noty informacyjne pozwalające zapamiętać treść czytanego fragmentu. W taki prosty sposób skomentował i potwierdził przeczytanie większości ksiąg Starego Testamentu. ks. F. Pilthowski pozostawił również noty świadczące o lekturze pogłębionej teologicznie. Było to chrystologiczne ujęcie fragmentów Starego Testamentu, realizacja proroctw w historii, tematyka sądu ostatecznego i przyjścia Chrystusa, katolickie rozumienie sakramentów, nowość życia chrześcijańskiego i powszechność zbawienia, życie kapłańskie. Porównanie wątków tematycznych powstałych poprzez analizę not ks. In the Library of the Higher Seminary in Kielce there is preserved a fourpart Bible published together with postil of Nicholas of Lyra. In the margins of this incunable, Fr. Florian Pilthowski, as a local vicar and at the same time an officialis of Kielce who lived in the second half of the 16th century, made marginal notes testifying to many years of reading the Bible. The research conducted showed reading of most of the books of the Bible. Most often, Fr. F. Pilthowski made informative notes that allowed him to remember the content of the passage he was reading. In such a simple way, he commented on and confirmed the reading of most of the books of the Old Testament. Fr. F. Pilthowski also left notes testifying to a theologically deepened reading. These included a Christological treatment of Old Testament passages, the realization of prophecies in history, the themes of the final judgment and the coming of Christ, a Catholic understanding of the sacraments, the newness of the Christian life and the universality of salvation, and the priestly life. The preaching usefulness of the Bible reading was marked by him by giving the dates of holidays from the calendar when analyzing them. A comparison of the thematic threads developed through the analysis of Fr. F. Pilthowskli’s notes with the research of modern biblical scholars on the value of Nicholas of Lyra’s postil indicates that the post-Tridentine, Kielce-based commentator recognized most of the important achievements of the 13th-century exegete. Nicholas of Lyra’s postil, which was crucial in the formation of Martin Luther’s theology in Pilthowski’s reception was a source that confirmed Catholic doctrine.
Hieronymus, Commentarii in Esaiam III 6, 1-3 i 6, 6-7, Vetus Latina 23, s. 307-315; s. 318-320). Otóż, w Iz 6 pojawiają się tajemnicze istoty zwane Serafinami. Po krótkim wprowadzeniu do samego komentarza, prezentujemy w tym artykule zagadnienie Serafinów w Hieronimowej egzegezie w 4 podpunktach: 1) Etymologia terminu Serafin (Serafini = incendentes, comburentes, ardor, incendium, principium oris eorum); 2) Sześć skrzydeł jako jedna z cech dystynktywnych Serafina (dwoma zakrywają twarz Boga (może swoją?), drugą parą skrzydeł zakrywają stopy Boga (a może swoje?), trzecia para zaś służy im do latania); 3) Obowiązki i zadania Serafinów (celebracja świętości Boga oraz są posyłane z różnymi zleceniami); 4) Alegoryczne rozumienie frazy Serafin (Serafiny mogą symbolizować: Stary i Nowy Testament, służebne moce niebieskie lub jakiś cień prawdy odnoszącej się do przyszłej niewoli). In the patristic era, the Book of Isaiah was of great interest to both Greek and Latin exegetes. St. Jerome of Stridon explained the prophet Isaiah many times. The subject of this article is the passages from book 3 of Jerome’s The Commentary on Isaiah, in which he analyzes, among others, Is 6:1-3 and Is 6:6-7 (cf. Hieronymus, Commentarii in Esaiam III 6, 1-3 and 6,6-7, Vetus Latina 23, p. 307-315, 318-320). Ergo, in Is 6 appear mysterious beings called Seraphim. After a short introduction to the commentary itself, in this article I present the issue of the Seraphim in Jerome’s exegesis in 4 subsections: (1) The etymology of the term Seraphim (Seraphim = incendentes, comburentes, ardor, incendium, principium oris eorum); (2) Six wings as one of the distinctive features of the Seraphim: (two cover the face of God (maybe theirs?), the second pair of wings covers God’s feet (or maybe theirs?), and the third pair is used for flying); (3) Duties and tasks of the Seraphim (celebration of the holiness of God and being sent with various commissions); (4) Allegorical meaning of the phrase Seraphim (Seraphim can symbolize: Old and New Testaments, serving celestial powers, or some shadow of truth relating to future captivity).
