The aim of the article is to analyze two Psalter translations, translation by Rich ard Rolle into English, and by Walanty Wrobel into Polish, in order to deter mine factors which may have influenced the translator ’s choice of translation techniques. Sub sequent sections describe the sociolinguistic context of the times when the translations originated, the target lan guage, as well as translation techniques used to obtain the target text. Medieval attitudes towards translated texts seem to have had almost no influ ence on the choice of a translation tech nique; thus, the author draws an elicit assumption that the translation style had no correlation with the cultural context, understood as a special attitude towards religious texts. The addressee had an influence on the final shape of translation, but they did not influence specific translation techniques used to render the text.
- ItemO dwóch (nie)podobnych przekładach Psałterza(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Charzyńska-Wójcik, MagdalenaCelem niniejszego opracowania jest przybliżenie dwóch przekładów łacińskiego Psałterza św. Hieronima: polskiego tłumaczenia z początku XVI w. i angielskiego z początku XVIII w. oraz ukazanie należnego im miejsca w historii przekładu Księgi Psalmów.

- ItemText and Context in Jerome’s Psalters: Prose Translations into Old, Middle and Early Modern English(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2013) Charzyńska-Wójcik, MagdalenaRozprawa habilitacyjna poświęcona tłumaczeniom i cyrkulacji łacińskich Psałterzy ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Anglii. Zawiera paralelną edycje wyselekcjonowanych w drodze badania angielskich tłumaczeń prozą oraz ich łacińskich oryginałów, dzięki czemu przedstawia obraz zmieniającego się języka angielskiego na przestrzeni 700 lat między okresem staroangielskim i wczesnowoangielskim. Dodatkowo praca przedstawia ciągłą glosę do staroangielskiego tłumaczenia Psałterza.
- ItemThe vicissitudes of hope - an insight into a forgotten translation of the Psalter by John Caryll(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Charzyńska-Wójcik, MagdalenaThe objective of the paper is to examine English equivalents of selected Latin verbs in all English prose translations of Psalms 1-50 executed between the late 9th and the early 18th century. The study revealed consistency of choices in the case of five renditions from the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries. In contrast, the earliest and the latest translations: King Alfred’s and John Caryll’s Psalters, though consistent in the case of semantically simpler equivalents (love and hate), showed quite a lot of variation when equivalents of hope were examined. Divergent choices in the case of the former have for some time been associated with a particular sociolinguistic situation in Anglo-Saxon England, which induced a particular translation approach. Moreover, this Psalter emerged as the first in the line of the many translations, so it had no model to lean on or relate to. Later translations were characterised by strict fidelity to the source text, as evidenced by the five medieval and early modern texts analysed here. Yet John Caryll’s English translation of the Psalter diverges from the established tradition. The examined equivalents of sperare show unexpected freedom, which can be accounted for by referring to the linguistic deficiencies of the existing Psalter text and the intended audience of his rendition.

- ItemTransitivity à la Old English(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2014) Charzyńska-Wójcik, MagdalenaThe paper is devoted to analysing how the evolving notion of transitivity in its various theoretical guises deals with the Old English data. In the first part it introduces two different classifications of OE verbs, both representing traditional approaches to transitivity, albeit based on different defining criteria. The empirical accuracy and theoretical status of these classifications are subsequently critically evaluated. The second part of the paper attempts to show how the theoretical apparatus available within the major current linguistic theories: formalism and functionalism fares with respect to the OE data. The strengths and weaknesses of all the presented approaches are brought together in the concluding part of the paper, which additionally presents the desiderata concerning prospective analyses of OE transitivity.
