dc.description.abstract	A human person is capable of transcending him/herself, moving towards Transcendence, and leading a spiritual life, i.e. entering into a relationship and dialogue with God. The beginning of the Christian spiritual life, including people living in non-sacramental unions, is in the Sacrament of Baptism. Baptism opens the person to dialogue with God and incorporates him or her into the ecclesiastical community. Persistence in the Church, a community of sinful people who aspire to sanctity, is essential for non-sacramentals because the Church shows them the path of renewal, follows it and listens to the truth of the Gospel, supporting them in this journey and thus properly forming their conscience. Taking Christ’s concern as an example, the Church condemns and rejects sin but not sinners and instead calls upon them to repent. Marital spirituality, which is born in the Sacrament of Marriage, is the spirituality of communion. In non-sacramental unions the communion with Christ and the Church is disrupted by sin. Since such partners persist in sin they are not to receive the Holy Eucharist, yet they can demonstrate a desire for spiritual holy communion, or a spiritual unification with Jesus. They can benefit from spiritual guidance on their way to conversion. They can develop spiritually through everyday prayer, reading the Bible and doing acts of charity. The Church accompanies non-sacramentals in their spiritual journey to give them hope that they are able to return to full communion with God and the Church through His grace and reject sin.
