dc.description.abstract	We współczesnym świecie zachodnim spotykamy się z niespotykanymi dotychczas w historii ludzkości zagrożeniami dla poczętego życia człowieka. Wiele z nich wynika z osiągnięć biologii i medycyny XX i początku XXI wieku, które nie są poparte dostateczną refleksją bioetyczną oraz analizą ich psychospołecznych, demograficznych i ekologicznych konsekwencji. Tymi zagrożeniami są: zawężone zbyt biologistyczne spojrzenie na początek życia ludzkiego i podważanie genealogicznego kryterium życia człowieka, antykoncepcja hormonalna, środki wczesnoporonne, aborcja, różne metody wspomaganej prokreacji (zapłodnienie in vitro), eksperymenty na embrionach (eksperymenty diagnostyczne, terapeutyczne i nieterapeutyczne/ eksperymenty chirurgiczne, farmakologiczne, genetyczne), diagnostyka preimplantacyjna i prenatalna (powiązana z aborcją eugeniczną), wykorzystywanie embrionów ludzkich dla celów leczniczych i kosmetycznych oraz innych. W referacie zostaną scharakteryzowane tylko dwa z tych zagrożeń: antykoncepcja i aborcja, ich kontekst bioetyczny, z odwołaniem do nauczania Kościoła katolickiego na przykładzie Encykliki Jana Pawła II "Evangelium vitae". In the modern Western world we come across threats to human life that have never appeared before in the history of mankind. Many of them are the result of the rapid development of biology and medicine in the twentieth and early twenty-first century that have not yet been supported by deeper bioethical reflection and an analysis of their long-term psychosocial, demographic and ecological consequences. These threats include: limiting the approach to the beginning of human life only to the biological aspect, undermining the genealogical criterion of human life, in vitro fertilization, experiments on the embryo (diagnostic, therapeutic and non-therapeutic experiments: surgical, pharmacological, genetic experiments), preimplantation genetic diagnosis and prenatal diagnosis (leading to eugenic abortion), the use of human embryos for therapeutic and cosmetic purposes. The paper characterizes such threats as contraception and abortion, their bioethical context, with reference to the teaching of the Catholic Church, especially the John Paul II Evangelium Vitae encyclical. Two crucial reasons of the “civilization of death” identified by the Pope are: the postmodern vision of the human being and secularization. The paper also discusses the relation between contraception and abortion, and presents the threats resulting from eugenic intentions of using prenatal diagnostics and preimplantation diagnostics. Twenty years after publishing the encyclical we can see that the concerns of John Paul II were legitimate – the new possibilities of medicine may also lead to an expansion of the “culture of death”.
