Abstract
The last two popes refer in their statements to “the Marian profile of the Church”. This phrase, which refers to the thought of H. U. Von Balthasar, has resounded in the contemporary theological reflection, meaning more than a secondary topic. Since the ecclesiological thought should focus on the sacramental and anthropological aspects, the topic of the Marian profile of the Church (as a part of the anthropological one) fully belongs to ecclesiology. However, the author of the article addresses the statements of John Paul II and Benedict XVI not only because of that. Another fact which inspired the article was that the teaching failed to receive a broader echo neither in the Church in Poland, nor in the Polish theology, although the Polish Church is often described as deeply Marian. The article is divided in two parts. In the first part, the author discusses all the statements of both John Paul II and Benedict XVI regarding „the Marian profile of the Church”. He analyzes their context and points to their doctrinal meaning. In the second one, arguing that „the Marian principle in the Church” refers not to some abstract idea, but to a living person, the author presents the ecclesiological implications of the principle, referring them to the most fundamental moments of Mary’s life. The implications consider: the primacy of grace in the Church, obedience to the Word, the mystery of motherhood, participation in Christ’s cross. The conclusion presents the implications of this theology for the Church. First, the mariological perspective on the mystery of the Church allows us to understand the reality of the Church as of an irreducibly personal character (communio personarum with its source in the mystery of the Trinity). As for the sacramental dimension of the Church, the Marian profile also requires that its forms were shaped so that it took into consideration human receptive abilities.
