Abstract
The aim of this article is to reflect on the relationship of man to his animal companions: dogs, cats, certain species of birds, rodents and reptiles. Interdisciplinary research points to a positive impact of contact with animals on the mental and emotional development of man. It should be emphasized that owners have a moral obligation to take care of their animals, which means providing them with adequate food and proper living conditions as well as maintaining them in good health. Modern people, however, often fail to fulfil this obligation properly. On the one hand, cases of cruelty towards animals are not infrequent. On the other hand, however, it is not also uncommon for people to treat animals as humans and surround them with disproportionate care, which must raise serious moral concern.
