Kształtowanie umiejętności czytania w edukacji przedszkolnej. Studium porównawcze metod analityczno-syntetycznej i glottodydaktyki

Abstract
Prezentowana monografia dotyczy kształtowania umiejętności czytania w edukacji przedszkolnej. Powstała na podstawie badań empirycznych prowadzonych w latach 2016–2018 w wybranych przedszkolach na obszarze dwóch województw – lubelskiego i mazowieckiego. Przedmiotem przeprowadzonych badań było porównanie efektów kształtowania umiejętności czytania dzieci w edukacji przedszkolnej według metody analityczno-syntetycznej Ewy i Feliksa Przyłubskich i metody glottodydaktyki Bronisława Rocławskiego. W edukacji przedszkolnej nauczyciele realizują rożne koncepcje kształtowania umiejętności czytania, wśród nich dużą popularnością cieszy się nadal metoda analityczno-syntetyczna o charakterze funkcjonalnym E. i F. Przyłubskich i metoda glottodydaktyki B. Rocławskiego. Celem przeprowadzonych badań była eksploracja i opis porównania efektów umiejętności czytania dzieci przedszkolnych kształconych metodą analityczno-syntetyczną według E. i F. Przyłubskich i metodą glottodydaktyki w koncepcji B. Rocławskiego. W pierwszej, kiedy analizowałam efekty edukacyjne, stosowałam metody jakościowe i ilościowe. Natomiast w drugiej warstwie dokonałam analizy porównawczej metody analityczno-syntetycznej według E. i F. Przyłubskich i metody glottodydaktyki w koncepcji B. Rocławskiego. XX wieku. Znaczący przełom zapoczątkowała transformacja ustrojowa przeprowadzona w latach 90. ubiegłego stulecia. Wprowadzono wówczas minimum programowe wychowania przedszkolnego, a nowelizacja ustawy o systemie oświaty z 1995 roku spowodowała, że w miejsce „minimum programowego” wprowadzono „podstawy programowe”. Natomiast kształtowanie umiejętności czytania postanowiono przenieść do edukacji przedszkolnej. Kolejnym przełomowym okresem była modernizacja ustroju szkolnictwa zapoczątkowana w 1999 roku. Wprowadzone modyfikacje przepisów były zachętą do tworzenia autorskich programów zawierających treści dotyczące nauki czytania w przedszkolu. Dynamiczne zmiany aktów prawnych i programów nauczania powodowały, że nauczyciele nie nadążali za śledzeniem przeobrażeń, nie dostrzegali różnic i nie rozumieli ich zasadności. Dlatego w 2007 roku po ponownej modyfikacji podstawy programowej zaczął się czas ostrej dyskusji o roli przygotowania dzieci przedszkolnych do nauki szkolnej. W efekcie tej polemiki w 2008 roku wprowadzono kolejne zmiany. Oprócz stopniowego obejmowania dzieci sześcioletnich obowiązkiem szkolnym znowelizowano podstawę programową wychowania przedszkolnego, w której umiejętność czytania i pisania przeniesiono do edukacji wczesnoszkolnej, a w edukacji przedszkolnej pozostawiono przygotowanie do nauki czytania i pisania. Obniżenie wieku rozpoczęcia nauki w szkole przez dzieci sześcioletnie nie zyskało powszechnego poparcia społecznego. Wobec licznych protestów w 2016 roku sześciolatki ponownie zostały objęte obowiązkiem odbycia rocznego przygotowania przedszkolnego, a czynności nauki czytania powróciły do edukacji przedszkolnej. W konsekwencji permanentnych zmian zachodzących w polskiej oświacie i po zatoczeniu koła dotyczącego nauki czytania w edukacji przedszkolnej postanowiłam zbadać: Jakie efekty w zakresie umiejętności czytania osiągają dzieci sześcioletnie? Trzy kolejne rozdziały (drugi, trzeci i czwarty) monografii zawierają ustalenia określające ramy merytoryczne i metodologiczne prowadzonych badań – paradygmaty wyznaczające podstawy kształtowania umiejętności czytania dzieci. Następnie określiłam przedmiot i cel badań. W odniesieniu do przyjętego celu sformułowałam problemy badawcze, hipotezy, zmienne i ich wskaźniki. W przeprowadzonych badaniach jako zmienne zależne przyjęłam: pamięć fonetyczną, syntetyzowanie wyrazów z fonemów, znajomość liter, tempo i techniki czytania oraz rozumienie czytanego tekstu. Zmienne niezależne stanowiły: metoda analityczno-syntetyczna E. i F. Przyłubskich i metoda glottodydaktyki B. Rocławskiego. Natomiast zmiennymi pośredniczącymi (społeczno-demograficznymi) były: płeć dzieci, okres uczęszczania do przedszkola, miejsce zamieszkania, wykształcenie rodziców. Zmienne te kontrolowałam dwukrotnie –w styczniu, koncentrując się na dojrzałości dzieci do nauki czytania i stopniu opanowanych już umiejętności czytania, oraz w czerwcu, skupiając się na efektach nauki czytania uzyskanych z zastosowaniem obu badanych metod. Dla ustalenia, czy badane problemy występują lub nie, relacje między zmiennymi zależnymi i niezależnymi oraz pośredniczącymi zostały wyrażone wskaźnikami. W analizie wskaźników społeczno-demograficznych uwzględniłam także dane dotyczące nauczycieli badanych dzieci (staż pracy, wykształcenie, awans zawodowy, stosowana metoda).W programie badań uzasadniłam dobór metod, technik i narzędzi badawczych, ktore przedstawiłam i opisałam. Rozdział piąty zakończyłam prezentacją proby badawczej i organizacji prowadzonych badań. Chcąc uzyskać dokładne dane liczbowe, nacisk położyłam na pogłębioną analizę statystyczną, która pozwoliła mi jednoznacznie określić, w której z tych stosowanych metod dzieci uzyskują lepsze efekty czytania i wyprowadzić wnioski pozwalające obiektywnie spojrzeć na wartości i mankamenty (mocne i słabe strony) obu metod. Wyniki badań przedstawiłam w dwóch rozdziałach – szóstym i siódmym.
The presented monograph concerns the development of reading skills in preschool education. It was created on the basis of empirical research conducted in 2016-2018 in selected kindergartens in the area of two voivodeships - Lubelskie and Mazowieckie. The subject of the research was to compare the effects of shaping children's reading skills in preschool education according to the analytical-synthetic method of Ewa and Feliks Przyłubski and the method of glottodidactics by Bronisław Rocławski. During preschool education, teachers implement various concepts of shaping reading skills such as the analytical-synthetic method of functional character E. and F. Przyłubski, and the method of glottodidactics by B. Rocławski which are still very popular. Comparing these two concepts, I did not assume the presentation of their effects in opposition to each other, but rather I investigated which determinants bear better results in shaping reading skills in preschool education, using two different methods. In order to ensure the objectivity of the obtained results, I decided to conduct comparative studies so that the collected scientific data would allow to objectively demonstrate the educational effectiveness of the acquisition of reading skills by children taught by these two methods. The aim of the conducted research was to explore and describe the comparison of the effects of reading skills of preschool children educated using the analytical-synthetic method according to E. and F. Przyłubski and the method of glottodidactics according to B. Rocławski. Being aware of the determinants of reading literacy, I decided to compare the educational effects of both methods in the oldest preschool groups. When analyzing the results, I focused on the most important research problems concerning children's reading skills in preschool education. I assumed that the conclusions from these studies would be useful in the pursuit of increasing the effectiveness of reading literacy in Polish kindergartens, regardless of the method used. In the process of comparative research, I distinguished two stages. In the first one, when I analyzed the educational effects, I used qualitative and quantitative methods. The second stage involved a comparative analysis of the analytical-synthetic method according to E. and F. Przyłubski and the method of glottodidactics in the concept of B. Rocławski. The advantage of the research stages designed in this way is the possibility of identifying which indicators of the research dependent variables bring better pedagogical results and which method is more effective in preschool education. The presented monograph consists of eight chapters written in the first person singular. Such a description makes it possible to separate one's own thoughts and conclusions from the presented findings of educators, psychologists and linguists dealing with shaping reading skills, not only at the pre-school level. I started the publication with a chapter containing an analysis of documents regulating the development of reading skills in kindergarten in the years 1970–2020 as education in Poland is determined by the legal regulations of the Ministry of National Education. Issues related to reading literacy in the scope of the curriculum content of preschool education in Poland appeared for the first time in regulations in the 1970s. A significant breakthrough was initiated by the systemic transformation carried out in the 90s of the last century. At that time, the minimum curriculum for pre-school education was implemented, and the amendment to the Act on the Education System of 1995 meant that "core curricula" were introduced in place of the "minimum curriculum". On the other hand, it was decided to move the development of reading skills to preschool education. Another breakthrough period was the modernization of the education system, initiated in 1999. The introduced modifications to the regulations were an incentive to create proprietary programs with content related to teaching reading in kindergarten. Dynamic changes in legal acts and curricula resulted in the fact that teachers did not keep up with following the transformations, did not notice the differences and did not understand their legitimacy. Therefore, in 2007, after the re-modification of the core curriculum, the time of sharp discussion began about the role of preparing preschool children for school education. As a result of this debates, further changes were introduced in 2008. In addition to the gradual inclusion of six-year-old children in compulsory schooling, the core curriculum of pre-school education has been amended, in which reading and writing skills have been transferred to early childhood education, and preparation for reading and writing has remained in pre-school education. Lowering the age of children starting school to six-year old did not gain general public support. In view of numerous protests in 2016, six-year-olds were again required to undergo a one-year pre-school preparation, and the activities of learning to read returned to pre-school education. As a consequence of the permanent changes taking place in Polish education and after making a full circle about learning to read in preschool education, I decided to investigate: what effects in terms of reading skills do six-year-old children achieve? The next three chapters (second, third and fourth) of the monograph contain findings that define the substantive and methodological framework of the research - paradigms that define the basics of shaping children's reading skills. In the second chapter, I presented important views on the relationship between the acquisition of reading skills and the mental maturity of a child. I referred to the findings of Stefan Szuman (1962), who distinguished the problems of children's readiness and sensitivity, and Barbara Wilgocka-Okoń (2003), who recognized school readiness as a process and effect of cooperation between the activities of children and adults. Among the many expectations that a child entering school should meet, I discussed the development of readiness to learn to read, referring to the views of: Anna Brzezińska (1987), Grażyna Krasowicz-Kupis (1999, 2004, 2006), Janina Malendowicz (1978), Eve Malmquist (1987) and Danuta Waloszek (2014). In this chapter, I also present three research-verified diagnostic concepts (Early enrollment of children to school, Diagnosis of school maturity according to Barbara Wilgocka-Okoń, School Readiness Scale) and the Good Start Method by Marta Bogdanowicz, which is used to develop children's readiness to school. This method was used by some of the teachers as a supplement to other forms supporting the development of child’s maturity for learning to read. In chapter three, I found it appropriate to provide more important findings relating to reading literacy. The complexity of this process can be found in many definitions that aim to present its essence in a concise way. Most of the findings in this chapter concern children's learning to read, as the monograph deals with the development of reading skills and efficiency in kindergarten. When analyzing the notions, concepts and determinants of reading skills, I referred to the views of educators, psychologists and linguists. The presentation of the state of art in this area was enriched by my own comments regarding preschool education, as for ten years I have been dealing with elementary education, especially in the field of acquiring reading skills. In the fourth chapter I presented - according to the historical order - the assumptions of synthetic and analytical methods as well as mixed methods (analytical-synthetic and synthetic-analytical). I drew attention to the reasons that prompted the educators to develop the concept of the assumptions of analytical and synthetic methods of a functional nature. Since the core of my monograph is a comparative analysis of the educational effects of learning to read carried out according to the analytical-synthetic method of E. and F. Przyłubski and the method of glottodidactics by B. Rocławski, I devoted a considerable part of my deliberations to discussing these concepts. In the final part of the chapter, I presented two more methods, i.e. Irena Majchrzak's method of learning to read [By-name method] and Jagoda Cieszyńska-Rożek's Simultaneous-Sequential Reading Science®, which are often used by teachers in shaping reading skills among children. I would like to add that these concepts were also used by teachers in kindergartens that I included in the research. The outline of the research program involved in chapter five presents the motives for undertaking comparative research on the reading skills of preschool children according to the analytical-synthetic method of E. and F. Przyłubski and the method of glottodidactics by B. Rocławski. Furthermore, there is a discussion of the theoretical framework and the assumptions resulting therefrom, which I adopted in the research program. Then I defined the subject and purpose of the research (mentioned earlier). In relation to the aim of the research, I formulated research problems, hypotheses, variables and their indicators. Properly defined research problems give meaning to scientific research and guarantee its reliability, which is why I have identified the main problem and specific problems. Bearing in mind the aim of the research, I identified the following main problem: Are there - and if so, then what are the differences in the reading skills of pre-school children educated with the analytical-synthetic method and the glottodidactic method at the level of phonetic memory, word synthesis, knowledge of letters, in the pace and ways of reading, and in understanding the read text and socio-demographic factors? In order to obtain an answer to the main problem formulated in this way, I identified four detailed problems that required hypotheses - general and specific. Thus, the adopted general hypothesis was: There is no difference in the level of phonetic memory, word synthesis, knowledge of letters, pace and ways of reading and understanding of the read text, between the effects of reading skills in pre-school children educated using the analytical-synthetic method and the method of glottodidactics, however, there are differences at the level of socio-demographic factors. With regard to the general hypothesis, I have identified four detailed hypotheses. In the conducted research, I included following dependent variables: phonetic memory, synthesizing words from phonemes, knowledge of letters, pace and reading techniques, and understanding of the text being read. The independent variables were: the analytical-synthetic method of E. and F. Przyłubski and the method of glottodidactics by B. Rocławski. On the other hand, the intermediary (socio-demographic) variables were: gender of children, the period of attending kindergarten, place of residence, and parents' education. I controlled these variables twice - in January, focusing on children's maturity to learn to read and the level of already mastered reading skills, and in June, focusing on the effects of learning to read obtained with the use of both tested methods. In order to determine whether the tested problems exist or not, the relationships between the dependent and independent variables as well as intermediary variables were expressed with indicators. In the analysis of socio-demographic indicators, I also included data on teachers of the surveyed children (seniority, education, professional promotion, method used). In the research design, I justified the selection of methods, techniques and research tools that I presented and described. I concluded this chapter with a presentation of the research sample and the organization of the research. In order to obtain accurate figures, I put emphasis on in-depth statistical analysis, which allowed me to clearly determine which of these methods used trigger better reading results achieved by children and draw conclusions that allow an objective look at the strengths and weaknesses of both methods. The research results are presented in two chapters - the sixth and the seventh. In chapter six, I described the institutions which surveyed children attended and the conditions in which they shaped their reading skills. Then, I conducted the characterization and analysis of the research sample, taking into account intermediary variables. In this chapter, I also present the preparation of teachers to learn to read in kindergartens selected for the research (education and additional forms of education, work experience, professional promotion, the method of teaching reading used). In chapter seven, I presented the research results on dependent variables. In order to precisely define the educational effects achieved by children taught with the tested methods, I applied statistical methods that I described in the first section. The collected data explained significant relationships - both quantitative and qualitative - between the dependent and independent variables as well as intermediary variables. Due to the length of the presented analyzes and the large number of tables, I have included most of them in the Annex. In chapter eight, I presented the conclusions from the research, which clearly show that regardless of the teaching method used, there was a visible increase in skills between measurements (January and June) among the studied six-year-old children in all dependent variables (phonetic memory, word synthesis, knowledge of letters, pace and techniques of reading, understanding of the text read) This result indicated the proper development of children and the effectiveness of shaping the readiness to study at school among six-year-olds. Nevertheless, the hypothesis (H2) was confirmed only with regard to phonetic memory and word synthesis in the remaining dependent variables, yet this hypothesis was not confirmed that children educated using the analytical-synthetic method and the glottodidactic method in terms of reading skills do not differ in terms of the increase in letter knowledge pace and techniques of reading and understanding of the text being read every six months. The research results also showed that the method of glottodidactics in the concept of B. Rocławski is more effective and gives much better results of teaching reading skills in preschool children than the analytical-synthetic method according to E. and F. Przyłubski. The comparisons of the research results between the methods revealed that the children taught with the method of glottodidactics showed a much better phonetic memory, a much better ability to synthesize words, and in both the first and the second measurement, much better knowledge of letters than children taught with the analytical-synthetic method. In terms of reading pace, preschoolers educated with the method of glottodidactics obtained not only higher results than children taught with the analytical-synthetic method, but the dynamics of increasing the rate of reading every six months among children educated with the method of glottodidactics was definitely higher than among children taught with the analytical-synthetic method. The analysis of the results of reading techniques also showed that children educated using the method of glottodidactics read syllables or read fluently more often than children educated using the analytical-synthetic method. On the other hand, children taught with the analytical-synthetic method more often spelled without synthesis and with incorrect synthesis than children taught with the method of glottodidactics. Regarding reading comprehension, children who were taught with the method of glottodidactics more often answered from memory to two questions about the read text than children who were taught with the analytical-synthetic method. Not only did this differentiation persist, but it deepened on the time between measurements. These results did not confirm the hypothesis (H1) assuming that there is no difference in the level of phonetic memory, word synthesis, knowledge of letters, pace and ways of reading and understanding the text being read between the reading skills of preschool children educated using the analytical-synthetic method and the glottodidactic method. The results of the first and second measurement also showed very significant relationships regarding the intermediary variables. With regard to the period of attending kindergarten, both groups of children with longer pre-school "experience" (from 4 to 5 years) obtained significantly higher results in all dependent variables than children who attended kindergarten for a shorter time (up to 3 years). With regard to this intermediary variable, the hypothesis (H3) was also confirmed. The hypothesis was also confirmed in relation to the size of the place of residence, and phonetic memory, knowledge of letters, reading techniques and understanding of the read text, in relation to the education of parents, and word synthesis and understanding of the read text, and between gender and reading techniques. The analysis of the correlation showed that regardless of the teaching method and measurement, children who read fluently had better phonetic memory, knew letters better and had a more developed ability to synthesize words, and read faster than other six-year-olds. On the other hand, children who spelled with incorrect synthesis were characterized by a lower level of phonetic memory, weaker ability to synthesize words and a slower reading pace. Similar dependencies concerned children who answered two questions from memory or did not answer any question at all. These results did not confirm the hypothesis (H4) assuming that the strength of the relationship between phonetic memory, word synthesis, knowledge of letters, pace and techniques of reading as well as reading comprehension does not differ among pre-school children learning with analytical and synthetic methods and glottodidactics. In the proposed recommendations, I drew attention to the important factors that influence the effective reading ability of children. One of them is the correct sounding of sounds in isolation ("phonemic purity"), on which the greatest emphasis is placed in the method of glottodidactics. On the other hand, in the analytical-synthetic method, this problem is less emphasized, which causes erroneous or incorrect word synthesis, and thus misunderstanding of the words and text being read. An important factor influencing the efficiency of reading in preschoolers is the time devoted to developing this skill which should be scheduled for a longer implementation. Increasing the teaching of reading in the last year of children's stay in kindergarten - as is often done in the analytical-synthetic method - has a negative effect. In B. Rocławski's program, children's reading skills start at three years old. Another factor influencing the effectiveness of children's reading is the preparation of teachers in developing reading and writing skills in kindergarten. As part of their education, teachers are much better prepared to develop reading skills using the analytical-synthetic method. The method of glottodidactics requires specialized training and appropriate teaching aids. Teachers must explore the scope of teaching that is not provided within the framework of studies and complete a course conducted by the Author of this method. Teaching aids are also helpful in shaping reading skills among children, which - as teachers stated - are too small and too expensive for the method of glottodidactics. On the other hand, the publishing market mostly includes educational packages addressed to teachers working with the analytical-synthetic method. However, the presented research results in all dependent variables showed that children educated with the method of glottodidactics by B. Rocławski achieve much better results than with the analytical-synthetic method according to E. and F. Przyłubski. Perhaps it is worth expanding the scope of educating teachers of pre-school and early childhood education to include the method of glottodidactics, especially that 2019/2020 academic year introduced full Master's studies which last 5 years. The collected and presented scientific evidence allowed me to demonstrate the educational effectiveness of the acquisition of reading skills by preschool children educated with the above-mentioned methods. Determining the effectiveness of the process of shaping reading skills among children will contribute to deepening the existing knowledge about what is conducive to and what makes it difficult for preschool children to master this important and difficult skill. The publication also includes the Conclusion, Bibliography, Netography, List of charts and List of tables (I analyze them in the main text) and an Annex, in which I have included photos of kindergartens included in the research, research tools and statistical tables supplementing the analysis of empirical chapters.
