Abstract
Post-Gregorian chants are an important area of study of the Latin monody of the late Middle Ages. Although derived from the classical repertoire, their stylistic expression is significantly different. One example of such forms is the rhymed office constituting an elaborate description of the life and death of a saint with the use of rhymed texts of antiphons and responsories. The subject of our study concerns the texts and melodies of the rhymed history of St. Catherine of Alexandria from the 12th-century Płock Pontifical. In the light of conducted research, it has been shown that the office of Saint Catherine carries the distinct traits of monodies of the late Middle Ages, both in its textual and melodic layers. It represents the sophisticated, mature form of the rhymed office, which is manifested by the rhymed structure of the poem and musical style, completely incongruous with the classic Gregorian assumptions.
