- ItemA Nineteenth-Century Processional from the Archive of Bonifratres in Cracow (Kraków). A Contribution to Research into Latin Monody(2020) Wiśniewski, PiotrW Archiwum Konwentu Bonifratrów w Krakowie znajduje się rękopiśmienny procesjonał z 1811 roku.
- ItemDuchowość chorału gregoriańskiego(Wydział Teologiczny Uniwersytetu Opolskiego, 2013) Wiśniewski, PiotrGregorian chant has always been presented in the Church documents as a model of liturgical singing. The centuries old tradition made it the most suitable and fundamental chant of the Roman Catholic Church. Gregorian chant owes its primacy to its sacredness, relgiousness and perfection of form. Whenever it appears in the liturgy it arouses the most noble feelings. When we sing Gregorian chant in the liturgy, we can feel the peculiar and unique depth of these melodies and their direct and intentional relation with particular liturgical ceremonies. We can sense the sacredness of the chant even if we do not grasp the meaning of its lyrics and it proves the exceptional spiritual power of the chant. The structure of the chant tunes does not so much aim at evoking particular affections as it serves the prayer, expressing the inner relation of man with God. Thanks to the moderation and simplicity of the tone, Gregorian chant facilitates a genuine prayer concentration while turning our thoughts to God. The spiritual power of this music became the reason for creating innumerable religious and liturgical compositions. Gregorian spirit is still present in many religious melodies composednowadays. It is the confirmation of the fact that this chant “has not died” yet but it is still alive and serves as a point of reference while determining whether newly created songs are appropriate for the liturgy or not. This chant not only personifies the sacrum but it is also a kind of musical icon, an exceptional point of reference, and the source of inspiration for all those who compose music connected with the Christian worship. That is why, twelve centuries after its creation, the Church still regards Gregorian chant as the unrivalled prototype of any liturgical music and up to now it has been a source of inspiration for great composers. However, to discover the real depth of these tunes, it is indispensable to listen carefully and look for the beauty which once was captured by their brilliant composers.
- ItemMelodie prefacji pozamszalnych w Pontificale Plocense z XII wieku(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, 2019) Wiśniewski, PiotrThe paper discusses the prefaces outside Mass supplied with melodies that can be found in the 12th-century Pontificale Plocense. Firstly, a short characterization of the manuscript is presented, the beginnings of the singing of prefaces as well attempts to note down the melodies is discussed. Next, the prefaces outside Mass are analysed with emphasis placed on the musical cadences with cheironomic notation. In addition, a comparison is undertaken between the discussed Pontifical and the Pontificals of Kraków (11th/12th c.) and of Wrocław (12th c.). It is possible that the recitative of the prefaces was subject to various degrees of melodisation, which was connected with the varying influence of compound neumes. The melodic versions of the cadences represent the varieties in tono solemnis and in tono solemniori. Numerous patterns of cadences in tono solemniori point to attempts to create new melodic patterns.
- ItemNieznany kodeks liturgiczno-muzyczny z Muzeum Archidiecezji Łódzkiej. Wstępny opis źródła i edycja melodii(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2021) Wiśniewski, PiotrMonografia prezentuje nieznany dotąd rękopiśmienny kodeks liturgiczno-muzyczny z Muzeum Archidiecezji Łódzkiej, oznaczony jako psałterz proweniencji zakonnej. Pobieżny wgląd w kodeks łódzki pozwala zaryzykować tezę, iż jest on potwierdzeniem dość powszechnej średniowiecznej praktyki wzajemnego oddziaływania oficjum katedralnego i monastycznego, zachowując zasadniczo tożsamość monastyczną.
- ItemOrgany i organiści w parafii Racławice w latach 1650-1998. Studium źródłowe(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2023-12-29) Moskal, Tomasz; Wiśniewski, Piotr; Adamko, RastislavArtykuł traktuje o organach i organistach parafii Racławice (diecezja sandomierska) w okresie blisko 350 lat. Z XIX wieku pochodzą szczegółowe wiadomości o warunkach mieszkaniowych i wynagrodzeniu organistów, a z XX wieku – o ich wykształceniu i zaangażowaniu w kulturę muzyczną parafii. This article deals with the organ and organists of the Racławice parish (Sandomierz diocese) over a period of nearly 350 years. The parish church was erected in the late 13th/14th century. Source information about the church’s furnishings goes back to 1604, while it was not until 1650 that the first mention of a musical instrument was recorded. In the 18th century, a 13-voice organ is mentioned, which was in use until 1914. After the church fire during World War I, a two-voice harmonium was used, which was replaced by a 12-voice organ in 1955. Attempts made by the then parish priest to build a new organ eventually ended with the expansion of the existing instrument. A 25-voice organ was commissioned in 1975 and moved into the new church in 1998. Sources provide information about the organists of Racławice from 1694 on. From the 19th century comes detailed information about the housing conditions and salaries of organists, and from the 20th century their training and involvement in the musical culture of the parish.
- ItemPaleographic Characteristics of Musical Notation in the Twelfth-Century Pontificale Plocense(Katolicka univerzita v Rużomberku, VERBUM, 2020) Wiśniewski, PiotrThe article is the first attempt to the read musical notation in the Pontifical from Płock, which is an aid in determining the provenance of the book. Analyzing the neum record, it was found that we are dealing with a combination of the St. Gallen and Metz traditions (the mixed notation of Metz-German). Perhaps the manuscript comes from the area of contact between the French and Flemish language circles, which had their own cultural characteristics clearly outlined at that time. It is inconceivable that it was created in the then existing in the scriptorium in Płock, basing on the patterns of the Meuse environment. The book's codicological features also allow us to formulate a conclusion that it was not a scriptorium dealing with the editing of such codes on a larger scale. The monument, due to its individual graphic features, is a valuable source for paleographic and semiological research.
- ItemPraktyka alternatim w rękopiśmiennym Cantionale (R. 583) z Jasnej Góry(Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu, 2017) Wiśniewski, PiotrW rozwoju praktyki wykonawczej monodii liturgicznej dużą rolę odegrała technika alternatim, z którą związana jest znaczna część muzyki organowej. Organy zastępując chór śpiewaków spełniały równoważną rolę, analogiczną do operowania tekstem liturgicznym. Do takich należały m.in. wielkie antyfony maryjne i wyznanie wiary. Ten wokalno-instrumentalny sposób wykonywania śpiewów łacińskich spotykamy również w rękopiśmiennym Cantionale R. 583 z początku XVI wieku, należącym do tradycji paulińskiej. Notuje on łącznie cztery śpiewy, w których zauważono praktykę alternatim: Salve Regina, Ave Regina caelorum, Regina caeli i Credo. W świetle przedstawionych antyfon maryjnych i założeń techniki alternatim wynika, iż rękopis pauliński respektował szczegółowe normy dotyczące jej stosowania, natomiast w przypadku Credo mamy do czynienia raczej z pewną tradycją lokalną. Przywołane przykłady dowodzą, iż sposób wokalno-instrumentalnego wykonywania śpiewów znalazł swoje miejsce również w obrębie łacińskiej liturgii paulińskiej.
- ItemPrimate Stefan Wyszyński - an eulogist of Gregorian chant(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, 2021-12-08) Wiśniewski, PiotrThe article shows the unknown aspect of the activity of Primate Stefan Wyszyński related to sacred music, which included in particular the promotion of Gregorian chant. The author extracts from his speeches the most important statements considering the singing and emphasizes its value and topicality in the liturgy of the Catholic Church. The Prima te’s respect for the singing is a testimony and manifestation of pastoral care to preserve the identity of the Church’s musical tradition.
- ItemProposals of Inculturation in Liturgical Music in Poland(Uniwersytet Mikołaja Kopernika w Toruniu, 2021) Wiśniewski, PiotrIn recent years, the music performed as part of the liturgy has been attracting an increasing amount of criticism. Many attempts have been made to introduce various substitutes for true musical art into the liturgy, including popular music. The author of the article is critical of relativism in art and asks about the limits of liturgical-musical liberalism, pointing to the dangers of misunderstanding inculturation. Considering the deeply rooted traditions of the Polish Church, he offers specific proposals for inculturation in liturgical music, in the liturgy and during services or devotions.
Dafür gibt es venigstens vier Möglichkeiten: a capite, a latere, modus directus, graduale.
Jednym z istotnych kryteriów, pomocnych w rozpoznaniu tradycji muzycznej, jest identyfikacja formuł psalmodycznych, obecnych zarówno w postaci intonacji psalmowych, a jeszcze bardziej w formie dyferencji psalmowych. Artykuł podejmuje te zagadnienia obecne w Pontificale Plocense z XII w.
- ItemThe Exsultet chant in the sixteenth-century Missale Paulinorum(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, 2015) Wiśniewski, PiotrThe aim of the present study is to characterise the Easter chant Exsultet from the Jagiellon Missal from the Jasna Góra archive contained and to compare it with the Roman version, as well as to point to certain links with the mutation of this work in Jan Haller’s printed Missale Gnesnense from 1506, mainly on account of the similar dates of the two books. The Pauline missal transmits a textual-melodic version of the Exsultet chant (fos. 116r–119r) that in its melodic layer clearly differs from the Norman version adopted in the thirteenth century, thanks to the Franciscans, by Rome and after the Council of Trent, in 1570, incorporated into the official edition of the missal. Comparing the textual layer of the proclamation under discussion with the version printed in the post-Trent missal, one can point to certain differences, generally of a minor character, in relation to the missal of Pius V. In light of the information gleaned from musical analysis concerning the version of the Exsultet chant in the Missale Paulinorum, it should be stated that this is not a faithful copy of either the Norman melody widespread in Europe or of the Gniezno melody. Its melody is full of modifications of various types in relation to the selected comparative sources, for the most part reflecting favourably on the originality of the Pauline source. We have observed in it, for example, certain features shared with the Roman version or different to it, differing from the Gniezno version but close to the Roman, or else displaying a surprising similarity with the Gniezno version but differing from the Roman, a salient example being the initial leap of a fourth. It cannot be excluded that the Pauline and Gniezno versions made use of a common melodic model (from Cracow, for example), whilst the authors of each imparted to their notation an individual colouring. This kind of variability to the melody attests on one hand the considerable migration of this chant and on the other the growing differences between melodic versions towards the end of the Middle Ages.
- ItemTropowana antyfona maryjna Salve Regina w XV-wiecznym psałterzu oliwetańskim z Łodzi(Uniwersytet Kardynała Stefana Wyszyńskiego, 2022-12-23) Wiśniewski, PiotrArtykuł przedstawia nieznaną dotąd w piśmiennictwie naukowym tropowaną wersję najstarszej i najbardziej popularnej antyfony maryjnej, jaką jest Salve Regina, zanotowaną w jedynym dotychczas zidentyfikowanym w Polsce rękopiśmiennym psałterzu oliwetańskim. Teksty dodane do oryginalnej postaci tej antyfony, która w swej treści jest przyzywaniem orędownictwa Maryi, by wyjednała u Boga ludziom zbawienie, nazywają Ją Matką Kościoła, Panną łaskawą, Matką Boga i Gwiazdą morza. Tytuły te, stanowiąc litanijne zawołania do Najświętszej Maryi Panny, komentują Jej przymioty: łaskawość, litościwość i słodycz.

Karmelitów w Oborach: antyfonarz i graduał. Korzystając z kanadyjskiego projektu internetowego Rebecci Shaw (http://differentiaedatabase.ca) ustala, w jakim stopniu terminacje kodeksu oborskiego należą do powszechnie stosowanych schematów euouae, a w jakim stopniu księga zawiera warianty melodyczne nieznajdujące odpowiednika w tradycji chorałowej.
