- ItemA Positive Side to Apophaticism: Prolegomena(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Gilski, MarekThe article synthetically presents positive aspects of apophaticism. It discusses its apologetic role, its importance in defending against magical thinking, its focus on experience, its openness to pluralism, and its inspirational role for a variety of disciplines in delimiting their cognitive boundaries. Some of the most important conclusions are: a) apophaticism played an important role in the early days of Christianity in polemics against both pagan cults and magical tendencies; b) already in ancient Greece apophaticism influenced the search not only for symbolic interpretations of Homer’s poems but also for religious experience; c) the limits of cognition discovered by theology are becoming a contemporary experience of other sciences (mathematics, physics).
- ItemAlegoria a alegoreza - przyczynek do dyskusji o poprawności terminów stosowanych w badaniach nad alegorezą grecką, żydowską i wczesnochrześcijańską(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Zieliński, JacekCelem niniejszego artykułu jest skonfrontowanie metody alegorezy greckiej (Heraklit Alegoreta) z alegorezą żydowską, zrekonstruowaną w oparciu o dzieła Filona Aleksandryjskiego i wczesnochrześcijańską (Orygenes). W kolejnych częściach tekstu omówiłem specyficzne cechy każdego typu alegorezy starożytnej: greckiej, żydowskiej i chrześcijańskiej. The purpose of this article is to contrast the method of Greek allegoresis (Heraclitus the Allegorist) with Jewish allegoresis, as reconstructed from the works of Philo of Alexandria and early Christianity (Origen). This reconstruction allowed me, in the section entitled allegory and allegoresis, to make the following theses: firstly, the terms allegory and allegoresis, without good reasons, are used interchangeably in the literature . And yet, the procedure of allegorising (allegory) a text differs significantly from the method of explaining the text in an allegorical way. For this reason, I have proposed a further theses of (1) the need to distinguish between the above procedures unambiguously and (2) to introduce specific terms to capture the difference between the Greek, Jewish and early Christian allegoresis. For this purpose, I have introduced concepts used in hermeneutics, namely: allegoresis sacra and allegoresis prophana. In the following sections of the article, I discussed the specific features of each type of ancient allegoresis: Greek, Jewish and Christian. All three forms of allegoresis aim to present a commentary that meets the standards of rationality developed by ancient science (philosophy), i.e. to eliminate all illogicalities, anthropomorphisms or anthropopathisms (with reference to God) and to extract a universal message from the text e.g. of the ‚Bible’. The difference that emerges between them, leads to the conclusion that, in contrast to the Greek allegoresis, Philo and Origenes recognize the validity of the literal sense (the letter of the text) in a different way; they make sure to preserve it . It can be claimed that with Origen the allegoretic method attained its fullest or mature form, (1) pointing to the three senses of the text: the literal (soma), moral (psyche), and mystical-philosophical (pneuma), and (2) combining the allegoresis sacra and prophana into a single method of reading and interpreting the text of the Scripture.

- ItemAnastazy Synaita, Homilia na temat Psalmu VI(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Piasecki, DariuszHomilia Anastazego Synaity na temat Psalmu VI utrzymana jest w konwencji pedagogiki chrześcijańskiej. Kaznodzieja przypomina słuchaczom o grzechu, zachęca do nawrócenia. Temu procesowi towarzyszy świadoma praca nad wadami, często łzy żalu oraz poprawa życia i naprawa zerwanych relacji z Bogiem i ludźmi. Anastasius of Synai's homily on Psalm VI is maintained in the convention of Christian pedagogy. The preacher reminds his listeners of sin, encourages them to repent. This process is accompanied by conscious work on flaws, often tears of regret and improvement of life and repair of broken relationships with God and people. The fruit of spiritual effort understood in this way is the complete conversion of the sinner, forgiveness of sins and preparation for death, which is an inevitable stage towards eternal life.
- ItemAngelology in the "Letters" of St. Ambrose of Milan(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Czyżewski, Bogdan StanisławIn the letters of St. Ambrose of Milan, one can find many interesting theological topics, including motifs related to angelology. According to the bishop, angels were sent by God. They serve God and people, if only for the reason that man is the most important work of the Creator. Angels play an important role as guardians and protectors of people. Although the angelology contained in the letters of the Bishop of Milan is not one of his key topics, it reveals how he perceived the world of angels. Aniołowie, zdaniem Ambrożego, pełnią ważną rolę stróżów i opiekunów względem ludzi. Chociaż zawarta w listach biskupa Mediolanu angelologia nie należy do tematów wiodących, to jednak w oparciu o zawarte w nich wypowiedzi można odczytać, w jaki sposób postrzegał on świat aniołów.
- ItemAngelology in the Writings of Justin Martyr, Tatian and Athenagoras(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Misiarczyk, LeszekThe aim of the study was to analyze the texts of Justin, Tatian and Athenagoras on the subject of angels. I do this on three points: the creation of angels by God/Logos as free beings (1); the tasks of angels (2) the sin of angels and the final annihilation of demons/evil angels. All three authors emphasize that God created angels and people as free beings, and therefore also responsible for their actions, and entrusted them with the care of people and his creation. However, some angels were deceived by the first angel (Tatian) or by the hostile power (Athenagoras), who let himself be carried away by vain glory, broke all ties of dependence on God and wanted to appropriate the deity. He turned into a demon and his followers into a host of demons. Athenagoras combines the concept of Tatian and Justin, stating that the power/spirit to whom God entrusted the management of matter and its forms, insulted its own essence and the power entrusted to it, and the angels from the first vault sinned by intercourse with women, which gave birth to giants. Tatian’s and Athenagoras’ concept of the sin of angels is definitely less mythical than that of Justin. According to Tatian and Athenagoras, this state of fallen angels is irreversible.
- ItemAniołowie (dobrzy i źli) w alegorycznej interpretacji Ksiąg Rodzaju, Wyjścia i Kapłańskiej w homiliach św. Saint Caesarius of Arles (470-543), a great preacher, priest, lover of Sacred Scripture, organizer of the Church and monastic life in Gaul, left us writings that have not lost their value to this day. His teaching on angels (good and bad) based on the allegorical exegesis of the books of Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus can serve today’s believers. The author shows the blessed fruits of human cooperation with angels and, at the same time, the danger of submitting to temptations cleverly suggested by the devil. Caesarius’ exegesis is Christ-Centered, the author shows the unity of Bible; the Old Testament is fulfilled in the New Testament. The aim of this article is to present Caesarius’ views on the good and bad angels on a base of his homilies in which he uses allegorical interpretation of the above mentioned books of the Scripture.
Przytoczono krótko też wyniki badań innego tekstu biskupa Petawium – De fabrica mundi, w którym to traktacie o stworzeniu świata pojawiają się ciekawe koncepcje autora o aniołach, dotyczące np. dwudziestu czterech aniołów pierwotnych stworzonych pierwszego dnia. The purpose of this article is to examine how Victorinus of Poetovium (Poetavium), in his Commentarius in Apocalypsim, comments on the passages in the Apocalypse of St John in which the term ‘angel’ – angelus – occurs, and how he interprets the term. First, the frequent occurrence of angels in Scripture, especially in the last book of the Bible, is mentioned. It was recalled, following Augustine of Hippo, that the term angelus denotes a mission and not the nature of the beings so termed. It was also stressed that, for the Church Fathers, angelology was not the most important issue addressed in their writings, and similarly, it is quite rare for scholars to deal with the patristic teaching on angels. A brief introduction is given to Bishop Victorinus as the first Latin exegete and his style of interpretation, especially the importance of alegoresis and typology. All explanations of the term angelus in the extant fragments of Victorinus’ commentary on the Apocalypse are discussed: first those in which angel is taken to mean Elijah or Christ himself, then the good heavenly angels, and finally the evil angels – the devil, the Antichrist – are analysed. The results of a study of another text by the Bishop of Poetovium, De fabrica mundi, are also briefly quoted, in which this treatise on the creation of the world contains interesting concepts by the author about angels, concerning, for example, the twenty-four original angels created on the first day.
The Vienna Hermetica consist of four fragmentally preserved texts found on Viennese papyri (Papyri Vindobonenses Graecae 29456r et 29828r) from the 2nd or 3rd century AD. Fragments III and IV are almost completely missing. On the other hand, the content of Hermetica Vindobonensia I and II oscillates around the privileged position of man (HV I) and the only nameless God (HV II).
The series of texts from the synods of the African Latin Church that speak of appealing to the Fathers contain strong arguments that irrefutably testify to the fact that the synodal fathers were convinced that it was always necessary to rely on the authority of the Fathers who lived earlier and to refer to the indisputable Tradition. We also learn from them that the expression “fathers” (or rare analogous forms such as, for example, “brothers” – ἀδελφοί, fratres) is synonymous with “Tradition”, since it is closely associated with the authority of the Councils, in particular the First Council of Nicaea, whose essential dogmatic significance is unparalleled in the history of the Church. The consequence of recognising the First Council of Nicaea as indisputable Tradition is to give the statements of the Fathers a normative character binding even on the Roman Church. A reading of the documents of the African synods reveals an increasing clarification of the determinants of Tradition: apostolic origin, antiquity, universal acceptance. But it is above all the recognition of the action of the Holy Spirit in the synodal college that gives Tradition its binding force and allows it to be identified with faith and truth. The documentation of the African synods represents a decisive step in the evolution of the relationship between Rome and other bishoprics in terms of jurisdictional primacy or the authoritative role of Rome. In its ultimate repercussions, the issue is thus tinged with ecclesiological and ecumenical tones. The texts discussed here allow us to discover the enormous contribution of the African Church to the ancient Christian thought of this golden age, in which Fathers such as Aurelius, Alypius and Augustine himself were active.
- ItemApophasis and System. Dogmatic Theology in Apophatic Perspective(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Woźniak, RobertThe subject of the article is the nature of theological apophasis in relation to the systematic aspirations of theological reflection. This relationship is analyzed from the perspective of the three essential truths of Christianity that form the hard core of its message: the Trinity, the personal union of the two natures in Christ, and deification. Accordingly, Trinitarian theology, Christology and anthropology are characterized, each area separately and in relation to the others, by a high degree of systematization. They constitute compact, organic and interrelated theological systems which, as constituent parts, form an organic whole. All three contain significant apophatic themes. An analysis of the connection between their systematicity and their apophatic dimension allows us to draw broader and more general conclusions about apophaticism in general and its place in theological systematization.
- ItemApophatic and Anthropomorphic Visions of God in Philo of Alexandria(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Mackie, Scott D.Despite his core theological convictions that God is incorporeal, formless, invisible, and unchangeable, in some of his most carefully crafted visio Dei texts Philo portrays God “changing shape” and temporarily adopting a human form. However, these are only “seeming appearances” and actually involve God projecting a human-shaped “impression,” or “appearance” (φαντασία) from his shapeless, immaterial being. By accommodating the overwhelming reality of God’s being to the perceptual and conceptual limitations of the human percipient, these docetic theophanies allow humans to more confidently relate to the deity, while at the same time preserving God’s absolute transcendence and apophatic otherness.
- ItemApophaticism, Mysticism, and Epoptics in Ancient and Patristic Philosophy: Some Important Examples(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Ramelli, Ilaria L.E.This article investigates mystic apophaticism in a set of Greek Patristic theologians, profoundly informed by philosophy, especially imperial Platonism: Clement, Origen, Gregory of Nyssa, and Pseudo-Dionysius. Both the terminology and the argumentative structure will be examined in each author and important connections among themselves and with ‘pagan’ Neoplatonists (including Plotinus, Porphyry, and Proclus) will be drawn. The reciprocal interrelations among epoptics, ἔρως and ἀγάπη, epektasis, and ἐπιστροφή and ἀποκατάστασις will be pointed out. The article will argue for the intended double-reference strategy to both ‘pagan’ and Christian Platonism, as well as Dionysius’ veiled response to Porphyry qua accuser of Origen, and the meaning of the charge, levelled against Dionysius himself, of “making unholy use of Greek things”—which is what ‘pagans’ had already charged Origen with. Dionysius retorted, “it is the Greeks who make unholy use of godly things to attack God!”, and this is again what Origen had responded.
- ItemAspects of Synodality in Recent Catechetical Documents: The Directory for Catechesis and Antiquum Ministerium(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2024) Sultana, Carl-MarioThis article seeks to draw out the implications of synodality as journeying together in some aspects of the Directory for Catechesis (2020) and of Antiquum Ministerium (2021). These notions of synodality cannot be fished out of these documents in an immediate way. The method which will be adopted is a bibliographical one where several texts will be analysed. The first part will seek to give a working definition of synodality. For a balanced view, this will be supplemented by some difficulties in synodality today. This will be followed by a very brief outline of how catechesis changed as a result of the Second Vatican Council. The Directory for Catechesis and Antiquum Ministerium will then be presented in terms of contents within them which point at or call for synodality. Finally, specific aspects of the contents of these two documents will be studied in view of their practical implications to catechesis in the contemporary secularised world, namely synodality within the structures of the Church entrusted with catechesis; accompaniment; listening and speaking, and discernment.
- ItemAwaken the Awareness of Transcendence: New Strategies for Catholic Schools in the Netherlands to Deal with Secularization(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2024) van_der_Zee, TheoSecularization poses serious challenges for religiously affiliated schools. Catholic schools in the Netherlands find themselves embarrassed regarding their educational endeavor because they are unable or lack the inspiration to talk about this subject in religious terms. This article aims to explore new ways of overcoming this embarrassment. Firstly, an overview is presented of the current situation and of the embarrassment of Catholic schools, in terms of their problematic choice of actions. Based on a critical-dialogical convergence of theological and pedagogical considerations, a Catholic vision on the educational endeavor is subsequently developed that is understood in terms of interruption, the other, and transcendence. From this vision of the educational endeavor, new strategies are presented – at the community level of Catholic schools, and at the individual level of teachers, school leaders, and governors – to promote an openness to receiving new, unexpected insights and possibilities. The receipt of these insights and possibilities is closely related to an awareness of transcendence, in both a secular and a religious sense. The initial findings of recent empirical research on the impact of these strategies are presented.
- ItemBenedict XV, Encyclical letter "Principi Apostolorum" (translation into Polish)(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2024) Królikowski, JanuszWith his encyclical "Principi Apostolorum", Pope Benedict XV proclaimed Ephrem the Syrian a Doctor of the universal Church. In this encyclical, Pope Benedict XV justifies this act by referring to the importance of his writings and theology for the Eastern Churches, as well as showing the universal significance of his figure and his theological work. The encyclical has not yet been translated into Polish and therefore deserves to be recalled and to benefit from the inspiration it contains for patristic studies.

- ItemCatechesis in Postmodernity – the Scope for Dialogue(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2024) Frejusz, KamillaCatechesis is always context-and-time-specific. It cannot be detached from reality, nor can it ignore the problems experienced by those being catechised. In this sense, postmodernity and its characteristic secularism place catechesis in a situation that requires recognition, and then discernment, of how in this new reality it is possible to proclaim catechesis and to reach the contemporary person with the Gospel. This article undertakes a reflection on the possibilities of catechetical dialogue with individuals living in postmodernity characterised by secularisation. The analysis addresses two principal issues. First, the context is described in which contemporary dialogue is conducted within the broadly understood catechesis. Then, specific points of convergence are identified that may open up a meeting space necessary for the emergence of dialogue with the postmodern person. The article concludes with a critical summary.
