The Problem of Fictional Objects in Roman Ingarden’s Ontology and Analytic Metaphysics

Abstract

I introduce Roman Ingarden’s ontology into contemporary debates revolving around fictional objects. After presenting Ingarden’s ontology and the main arguments from analytic non-eliminativism and analytic elimmativism, I put forth my systematic analysis of the problem. I systematically compare Ingarden and two major analytic non-eliminativist theories of fictional objects. In my “Ingarden vs. (Neo-)Meinongianism,” I compare Ingarden’s ontology of fictional objects and Meinong’s/analytic neo-Meinongians’ with regards to the problems of “generation” and “ascription.” In my “Ingarden vs. Lewis,” I establish a “purely intentional modal fictionalism,” according to which fictional worlds ate purely intentional, applying this theory to the problem of indeterminacy. From the eliminativist camp, I bring Ingarden into conversation with Charles Crittenden, arguing against his theory of fictional objects qua objects of reference from two points of view: ontology and practice. In my “Ingarden vs. Walton,” I am more critical of Ingarden’s theory of purely intentional objects. That is, I claim that Ingarden’s theory is akin to Walton’s pretense, for the purely intentional object’s content properties- which are supposed to guarantee the constitution and unity of the object -are “heteronomous.”

Wprowadzam antologię Romana Ingardena do współczesnych debat toczących się wokół przedmiotów fikcyjnych. Po przedstawieniu ontologii Ingardena i głównych argumentów z nieeliminatywizmu analitycznego i nieeliminatywizmu analitycznego, przedstawiam moją analizę problemu. Z obozu, eliminatywistycznego zestawiam Ingardena w analizie z Charlesem Crittendenem, w której polemizuję z jego teorią przedmiotów fikcyjnych jako przedmiotów odniesienia z dwóch punktów widzenia: ontologii i praktyki. W części "Ingarden kontra Walton" jestem bardziej krytyczny wobec Ingardenowskiej teorii przedmiotów czysto intencjonalnych.
