Scribal Abbreviations in Early Fifteenth-Century Biblical Manuscripts (Royal MS 1 E IX; Mscr.Dresd.Od.83 and Scheide M12) ‒ a Study Based on the Gospel of Matthew

Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to examine the use of scribal abbreviations in three early fifteenth-century manuscripts of the Bible. Two of the analysed manuscripts, Scheide M12 and Mscr.Dresd.Od.83, are examples of the Wycliffite Bible, whereas the third one, Royal MS 1 E IX, represents a Latin Bible. The analysis carried out in this work is based on the Gospel of Matthew. The dissertation is divided into an introduction, four chapters and conclusions as well as three appendices containing the transcripts. The introduction comprises the explanation of the choice of the manuscripts, the basic information about the Wycliffite Bible and methodology. The first chapter entitled “Preliminaries” examines the history and typologies of the scribal abbreviations. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 analyse the use of scribal abbreviations in the three manuscripts. The chapters are divided into parts discussing the characteristics of the manuscripts and the analysis of the scribal system of abbreviations. Conclusions include the comparison of the systems of abbreviations and the final conclusions.Celem niniejszej rozprawy doktorskiej jest zbadanie i porównanie systemów abrewiatur używanych w trzech biblijnych manuskryptach z początku XV wieku. Dwa z analizowanych manuskryptów, Scheide M12 i Mscr.Dresd. Od.83 stanowią fragmenty średnioangielskiej Biblii Wycliffe’a, natomiast trzeci manuskrypt, Royal MS 1 E IX pochodzi z łacińskiej Biblii. Analiza abrewiatur oparta jest w pracy o tekst Ewangelii według Św. Mateusza. Rozprawa składa się ze wstępu, czterech rozdziałów i konkluzji oraz załączników zawierających oryginalne transkrypty Ewangelii wg. Św. Mateusza z trzech badanych manuskryptów, przygotowane na potrzeby badania. Wstęp zawiera wyjaśnienie dotyczące doboru manuskryptów, podstawowe informacje dotyczące Biblii Wycliffe’a oraz metodologię. Natomiast pierwszy rozdział, zatytułowany „Preliminaries” porusza kwestię historii i typologii abrewiatur. Rozdziały drugi, trzeci i czwarty przedstawiają użycie abrewiatur w manuskryptach badanych w tej pracy. Rozdziały mają symetryczny układ i są podzielone na dwie części. Pierwsze części rozdziałów opisują manuskrypty, którym są poświęcone, w tym mise-en-page, użycie liczb, czy interpunkcję. Natomiast w ich drugiej części przedstawione są analizy systemy abrewiatur w poszczególnych manuskryptach. W rozdziale wieńczącym pracę zawarłam zarówno porównanie zbadanych systemów, jak i wnioski z niego płynące.
