Biskup Rzymu wobec problemów doktrynalnych przełomu VI i VII w. na podstawie epistolografii Grzegorza Wielkiego
Abstract
Zamysłem pracy było uchwycenie wątków teologicznych w „Registrum epistularum” Grzegorza Wielkiego w celu określenia historycznej roli, jaką odegrał ten biskup Rzymu wobec problemów doktrynalnych przełomu VI i VII w., kiedy przypadł jego pontyfikat (590-604). Listy papieża pozwoliły opisać trzy problemy doktrynalne, które wtedy trapiły Kościół. Są one tematami trzech rozdziałów pracy. Pierwszy problem to kontrowersja wokół potępienia Trzech Rozdziałów, drugi to spór o tytuł „powszechny” używany przez patriarchów Konstantynopola, a trzeci do herezja donatystyczna. W pracy opisano tło historyczne i teologiczne tych sporów, a następnie przedstawiono stanowisko i działania Grzegorza w każdej z tych spraw. Lektura „Listów” pozwala wyciągnąć kilka wniosków. Grzegorz Wielki nie unikał konfrontacji z najwyższymi władzami świeckimi i duchownymi. Był dobrze zorientowany w sprawach prawnych i politycznych. Miał szerokie spojrzenie i potrafił czynić ustępstwa w celu zapewnienia drogi do jedności kościelnej. Podejmował różnorakie działania, aby jednoczyć Kościół wokół wyznania rzymskiego. Nie rezygnował w próbach budowania jedności kościelnej, chociaż okres jego pontyfikatu był czasem bardzo trudnym pod wieloma względami. Grzegorz interesował się wszystkimi zakątkami Kościoła.
The intention of this paper was to capture the theological themes in Gregory the Great’s “Registrum epistularum” in order to determine the historical role played by this Bishop of Rome when facing doctrinal problems of the turn of the sixth and seventh centuries. This is when his pontificate fell (590-604). The pope’s letters made it possible to describe three doctrinal problems that troubled the Church at the time. They are the subjects of three chapters of the thesis. The first problem is the Three Chapters controversy, the second is the dispute over the title „Ecumenical” used by the Patriarchs of Constantinople, and the third is the Donatisi heresy. The work describes the historical and theological background to these disputes and then outlines Gregory’s position and actions in each of these cases. The analysis of the “Letters” allows several conclusions to be drawn. Gregory the Great did not shy away from confrontations with the highest secular and clerical authorities. He was well versed in legal and political matters. He had a broad outlook and was able to make concessions in order to secure a path towards ecclesiastical unity. He took various measures to unite the Church around the Roman Confession. He did not give up in his attempts to build ecclesiastical unity, although the period of his pontificate was a very difficult time in many respects. Gregory was interested in all distant comers of the Catholic Church.
