Kontakty Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego z instytucjami i społecznościami kanadyjskimi i amerykańskimi w latach 1970-2000

Abstract

Rozprawa poświęcona jest kontaktom Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego z instytucjami i społecznościami Kanady oraz USA w latach 1970-2000. Celem rozprawy jest ukazanie, jakie były powody nawiązywania tych relacji, co było ich rezultatem oraz jaka była rola KUL, niewielkiej uczelni działającej w komunistycznym bloku wschodnim, a potem w Polsce zmagającej się z nową rzeczywistością po upadku komunizmu na scenie międzynarodowej, w opinii Polonii, zachodniego świata nauki i polityki. Pierwszy rozdział obejmuje główne interakcje podejmowane przez KUL z kanadyjskimi i amerykańskimi instytucjami naukowymi. Scharakteryzowana została również działalność Zakładu Duszpasterstwa i Migracji Polonijnej w kontekście badań nad polską diasporą w Kanadzie i USA, a także inicjatywy podejmowane przy współpracy z kanadyjskimi i amerykańskimi fundacjami. Druga część pracy poświęcona jest kontaktom KUL z władzami Kanady i USA reprezentowanymi przez ich misje dyplomatyczne i agendy rządowe. W rozdziale tym opisane zostały ponadto kontakty z polonijnymi organizacjami i mediami jako promotorami idei KUL za oceanem oraz z przedstawicielami Kościoła katolickiego w tych krajach. W rozdziale trzecim opisana została pomoc finansowa, jaką pozyskał KUL z Kanady i USA w ostatnim trzydziestoleciu XX wieku i jej rezultaty, osiągnięte przede wszystkim dzięki aktywności Kół Przyjaciół KUL w tych krajach i proces budowy Collegium Jana Pawła II. Opisana została ponadto działalność delegatów rektora KUL w Ameryce Północnej.

This dissertation presents the contacts of the Catholic University of Lublin with institutions and communities of Canada and the USA in 1970-2000. The dissertation aims to show the reasons for establishing these relations, their result, and the Catholic University of Lublin's role on the international scene, in the opinion of the Polonia, the Western world of science and politics, as a small university in the communist Eastern Bloc and later in post-transformation Poland. The first chapter of the dissertation covers the main interactions undertaken by KUL with Canadian and American scientific institutions. The activity of the Institute for Polonia Ministry and Migration was characterized in the context of research on the Polish diaspora in Canada and the USA, as well as initiatives undertaken in cooperation with Canadian and American foundations. The work's second part is devoted to the KUL's contacts with the Canadian and US authorities, represented by their diplomatic missions and government agencies. This chapter also describes contacts with Polonia organizations and the media as promoters of the KUL idea overseas and with representatives of the Catholic Church in those countries who, by the interest shown to the Catholic University of Lublin. The third chapter describes the financial aid obtained by KUL from Canada and the USA in the last thirty years of the 20th century and its results, achieved mainly thanks to the activity of the Friends of the Catholic University in these countries, in the process of building the Collegium of John Paul II and aid initiatives undertaken by various organizations. Activities of the KUL rector's delegates in North America are also described.
