"'Ut ab omnibus omnia deleantur hominibus facinora”. Praktyki pokutne Kościoła irlandzkiego i brytyjskiego w świetle ksiąg pokutnych (V-VIII w.)
Abstract
Rozprawa doktorska, przygotowana w formie cyklu siedmiu artykułów naukowych, analizuje praktyki pokutne Kościoła irlandzkiego i brytyjskiego na podstawie ksiąg pokutnych (V-VIII wiek). Autoreferat, poprzedzający cykl, wprowadza w tematykę badań, omawia źródła i podsumowuje wyniki. Celem pracy jest ukazanie praktyk pokuty indywidualnej propagowanej przez mnichów iroszkockich, jako drogi do osobistej świętości. Badania łączą metody historyczno-krytyczne, hermeneutyczne i komparatystyczne. Cykl podzielono na trzy części. Pierwsza (artykuły 1-2) przedstawia mnichów iroszkockich jako twórców ksiąg pokutnych. Druga (artykuły 3-5) opisuje praktyki pokutne w kontekście życia codziennego, np. służby wojskowej, rodziny i Eucharystii. Trzecia (artykuły 6-7) ukazuje duchowy wymiar pokuty, interpretując grzech jako „chorobę duszy”, a nawrócenie jako drogę do „duchowego zdrowia”. Księgi pokutne ukształtowały praktykę indywidualnej i powtarzalnej pokuty, wpływając na duchowość i dyscyplinę kościelną w Europie. Rozprawa podkreśla znaczenie tradycji iroszkockiej jako unikalnego fenomenu w historii Kościoła zachodniego.
The doctoral thesis, which is presented in the form of a series of seven academic articles, analyses the penitential practices of the Irish and British Church on the basis of the penitential books (5th-8th centuries). The author's abstract, which precedes the series, introduces the subject of the research, discusses the sources and summarises the results. The aim of the thesis is to show that individual penance, as propagated by the Irish monks, was a path to personal holiness. The research combines historical- critical, hermeneutic and comparative methods. The series is divided into three parts. The first (articles 1-2) presents the Irish monks as the creators of the penitential books. The second part (articles 3-5) describes penitential practices in the context of everyday life, e.g. military service, family and the Eucharist. The third part (articles 6-7) shows the spiritual dimension of penance, interpreting sin as a ‘disease of the soul’ and conversion as a path to ‘spiritual health’.
The books of penance shaped the practice of individual and repetitive penance, influencing spirituality and ecclesiastical discipline in Europe. The dissertation emphasises the significance of the Scottish tradition as a unique phenomenon in the history of the Western Church.
