Knowledge of other minds. A critical reassessment of the argument from analogy and its relevance to contemporary discussion on mindreading

Abstract

Główną tezą niniejszej pracy jest to, że argument z analogii jest istotny dla współczesnych teorii mindreadingu. W celu wsparcia powyższego stwierdzenia autor porównał i przeanalizował ukryte presupozycje głównych stanowisk filozoficznych z obu stron debaty toczącej się w ramach dziedziny. Praca podzielona jest na cztery części, na które składa się dziewięć rozdziałów, nie wliczając wstępu i wniosków. Pierwsza część analizuje filozoficzne tło problemu innych umysłów; druga skupia się na tradycji fenomenologicznej; trzecia zawiera przegląd tradycji teorii umysłu; a czwarta prezentuje filozoficzną rewaluację oraz autorski argument za rolą niejawnej analofgii w mindreadingu. Głównym wnioskiem pracy jest to, że znaczenie pierwszoosobowej perspektywy, która stanowi podstawę dla argumentu z analogii, jest również obecne w presupozycjach teorii mindreadingu. Argument z analogii nie jest jednak w stanie odpowiedzieć na pewne kluczowe zagadnienia odnośnie do innych umysłów. Wyłania się raczej potrzeba integracji teorii mindreadingu, w ramach której niejawna analogia odegra główną rolę.

The main thesis of this dissertation is that the argument from analogy is revelant to the contemporary theories in the discussion on mindreading. To justify this claim, the researcher comparatively analyzed the presuppositions of the dominant philosophical positions on different sides of the theoretical divide. The work comprises four parts (subdivided into nine chapters), besides the introduction and conclusion. In relation to the analogical argument, the first part analyzes the philosophical background of the problem of other mind; the second part examines the phenomenological tradition; the third part gives a philosophical reevaluation and presents the researcher's argument in favor of the tacit analogy hypothesis. The researcher concluded, among others, that the importance of the first-person perspective on which analogical argument is anchored is crucial to the presuppositions of the other theories. However, the argument is not suited to answer certain key questions regarding other minds. there is demonstrable need for an integrated account of mindreading in which tacit analogy plays a key role.
