Abstract
Celem opracowania pt. Obraz wszechświata w pismach Izydora z Sewilli jest nakreślenie granic i kształtu wszechświata w traktatach Izydora z Sewilli i próba sformułowania wzajemnych relacji świata i człowieka. Obraz prezentowany jest w pięciu rozdziałach, dotyczących kolejno wizji nieba, ziemi, świata przyrody, człowieka oraz czasu. Autor nie tylko przedstawia elementy wszechświata zgodnie ze współczesnym wyobrażeniem, nie tylko opisuje ich wygląd, właściwości, wpływ i współistnienie z innymi częściami universum. Prócz szczegółowej deskrypcji pojawia się bowiem skrupulatny komentarz, w którym Izydor wyjaśnia pochodzenie zjawiska. Udowadnia, że relacje pomiędzy poszczególnymi częściami świata nie pozostają tylko na poziomie przyrody, lecz mają głębokie umocowanie w dorobku kulturowym człowieka i są dowodem na jego ciągłość. Łańcuch objaśnień i skojarzeń zawiera pewien kod kulturowy, ujawniający odwieczną potrzebę człowieka - wyjaśniania zagadnień tajemniczych i dążenia do porządkowania rzeczywistości według kryteriów przyczyny i skutków. Analiza dyskursu biskupa Sewilli prowadzi ponadto do wniosku, że choć opisuje on dzieło stworzenia w kontekście natury, to wyraźnie zaznacza, że równie istotną rolę w kształtowaniu świata i organizowaniu go według określonego porządku odgrywają interpretacje, którymi człowiek opatruje każde z obserwowanych zjawisk natury.
The topic of this dissertation is The image of the Universe in the Letters of Isidore of Seville. It is based on the tractates from VII century by Isidore of Seville, Spanish scholar of the beginning of the Middle Ages. Study consists of five chapters. First of them concerns medieval vision of heaven. It describes the stars, planets, constellations and their relations mutual relations to themselves and to the earth. It is about the Sun, the Moon, the Zodiac, the celestial circles, the directions of the world, the winds and the weather. It was shown here the influence of motions of celestial bodies on humans’ and animals’ life in the earth. In the second chapter there is included description of the earth, with definitions and examples of standing and flowing waters, the lands, with division into continents, islands and archipelagos. It gives the informations about landforms and underground space. Third chapter refers to the world of nature, especially domestic and wild animals. Isidore describes mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians and insects. The fourth parts includes definition of the man - his body, nature, senses, parts of his life, his birth and death. It shows the connections and relations between man and nature, earth and heaven. The fifth and the last part of dissertation characterizes the phenomenon of time as the product of human culture and history.
