Stanisław Librowski, dyrektor Archiwum Diecezjalnego we Włocławku.
(English) The scholarly journal ‘Archiwa, Biblioteki i Muzea Kościelne’ is a publishing house of the Institute of Church Archives, Libraries and Museums of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. The periodical has been published continuously since 1959. The journal was founded by Fr Romuald Gustaw OFM, the Director of the Catholic University of Lublin Library and Rev. Stanisław Librowski, the Director of the Diocesan Archive in Włocławek, who also became the editor-in-chief of the periodical.
The three first volumes of ABMK were released as quarterly journals. Since 1962 (the fourth volume), the journal has been published twice a year.
The journal is unique on a world scale because it publishes articles from three areas (archive studies, library science and museology), referring to the activity of the cultural institutions of the Catholic Church.

- ItemAkta personalne profesorów wydziałów teologicznych uniwersytetów II Rzeczypospolitej(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Przeniosło, Małgorzta; Przeniosło, MarekW II Rzeczypospolitej funkcjonowało sześć uniwersytetów, wydziały teologiczne utworzono na pięciu z nich: Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim, Uniwersytecie Jana Kazimierza we Lwowie, Uniwersytecie Stefana Batorego w Wilnie, Uniwersytecie Warszawskim i Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim. Materiały takie znajdujemy w Archiwum Akt Nowych w zespole Ministerstwo Wyznań Religijnych i Oświecenia Publicznego. Taką dokumentację przechowują także: Litewskie Centralne Archiwum Państwowe w Wilnie, Lwowskie Państwowe Archiwum Obwodowe, Archiwum Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego i Archiwum Uniwersyteckie Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego. Six universities were operating in the Second Republic; theological faculties were established at five of them: Jagiellonian University, Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv, Stefan Batory University in Vilnius, Warsaw University and Catholic University of Lublin. The theological faculties employed a total of 80 professors in the interwar period. The source base we have at our disposal while researching the professorial staff of theological faculties is remarkably rich. Personal files in particular are of great importance. Such materials are to be found in the Archive of New Files in the fond Ministry of Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment. Such records are also kept in: Lithuanian Central State Archive in Vilnius, Lviv State Regional Archive, Jagiellonian University Archive and University Archive of the Catholic University of Lublin. The documents that can be found in the personal file most often relate to: matters of employment of professors, scientific activity, performance of teaching duties, social issues. Almost every file contains the professor’s curriculum vitae and a list of his scientific achievements.
Zu seinen Befürwortern gehörten u.a. F. Guizot, G. P. de Barante, A. Thierry, J. Michelet, F. Arago und L. Courajod. Dagegen traten als Gegner u.a. A. Quatremčre de Quincy, F. Chateaubriand, L. P. Deseine und E. Viollet-le-Duc in Erscheinung.
- ItemAntoni Gąsiorowski – drukarz i wydawca z Johannisburga w Prusach Wschodnich(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2018) Warda, ElwiraW XIX wieku w Europie nastąpił gwałtowny rozwój piśmiennictwa. Oficyna Gąsiorowskiego działała w Johannisburgu do roku 1866. In the 19th century, writing underwent a rapid development. Books and magazines were widely available, not only among high society but also among the people who were less wealthy. New printing houses were established, also in Prussia, such as Walenty Stefański’s printing house in Poznań and Ernst Lambeck’s printing house in Toruń. Antoni Gąsiorowski learnt the art of printing and making woodcuts in the above-mentioned places. He set up his own printing house in Brodnica in 1847, but he transferred it to Masuria to Szczytno (Ortelsburg) in 1848, and a year later to Pisz (Johannisburg). In Szczytno he started printing the bilingual weekly "Kurek Mazurski – Der Masurische Hahn", which he continued to publish in Johannisburg. Gąsiorowski’s printing house was one of the most active printing houses in East Prussia, in which a number of magazines were published. However, most of them were discontinued after releasing the first issue, for instance, "Ewangelicki Tygodnik Gminny" or "Gospodarz Mazurski". Apart from weeklies, Antoni Gąsiorowski published Polish and German books, particularly religious ones, course books and calendars. In the 1860s, his printing press also released the texts written in Cyrillic intended for the Old Believers. Gąsiorowski’s printing house operated in Johannisburg until 1866. Nevertheless, from 1862 onwards, most publications – including the calendar – were taken over by the library and printing house of Ernst Lambeck in Toruń. The last Polish print published by Antoni Gąsiorowski was the book by B. Schmolke The Gold Jewel Dedicated to God Intended for People Worshipping God the Father and the Holy Spirit. It was released in 1865.

In 1917, with the seizure of power by the Bolsheviks in parts of the former Russian Empire, measures were undertaken to separate the state from the Church. These included the creation of a system for civil registration of important events in people’s lives. The implementation of this system was initially carried out by confiscating record books from churches. It later turned into a campaign to destroy all documents that failed to describe ‘the struggle of the proletariat for its rights’. In 1939, 905 tons of historical documents, including materials from the parish archives of Belarus, were ground at the Albertin factory in Slonim. The incident became the apogee of the Soviet authorities’ struggle against ‘counter-revolutionary’ historical sources. The Catholic Church, as one of the ‘hostile’ elements to Soviet power, suffered heavy material, personnel and organizational losses. The article describes the actions of state authorities concerning the archival records of Roman Catholic parishes in Soviet Belarus. The basic normative acts on the basis of which church records were confiscated have been presented. Other actions by the state authorities to destroy parish archives are also shown. The paper also addresses the efforts of the Roman Catholic clergy to preserve the church’s archival legacy as an important source documenting the history of the Church in Belarus. The article also describes the various activities of Belarusian researchers who catalogued and compiled the resources of parish archives. The most valuable church records were given to state museums and libraries for preservation and to make them available for scientific research.
- ItemArchiwum parafii pw. Do Polski powróciła wraz z całą Wałecczyzną w 1945 roku. W 1990 roku Jastrowie stało się siedzibą dekanatu. W latach 2004-2005 zachowane archiwalia przedwojenne zostały przekazane do Archiwum Diecezji Koszalińsko-Kołobrzeskiej w Koszalinie. Opracowane archiwalia mogą posłużyć do dalszych badań historii miasta i najbliższej okolicy. The subject matter of the article is a list of preserved archival materials of the parish of St Michael the Archangel in Jastrowie. In 1602, Jastrowie was granted the municipal rights by the hands of the starost of Ujście, Piotr Potulicki, confirmed by King Sigismund III Vasa. The first church may have been built as early as the 14th century. The temple was taken over by Protestants in the 16th century and reclaimed by Catholics in the early 17th century. The Jastrowie parish, along with the Wałcz land, belonged to the Czarnków deanery, and at the end of the 18th century to the Wałcz deanery. In 1772, it became part of the Prussian state. It returned to Poland in 1945, along with all of the Wałcz Region. In 1990, Jastrowie became the seat of a deanery. In 2004–2005, the surviving pre-war archives were transferred to the Archives of the Diocese of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg in Koszalin. There they were developed and inventoried, divided into series with new reference numbers (1–145). The chronology of the files spans the 17th–20th centuries, with 2.9 linear metres and 145 archival units. The compiled archives can be used to further research the history of the town and the immediate area.
- ItemArchiwum parafii rzymskokatolickiej w Klimontowie(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2014) Dywan, TomaszThe parish in Klimontów (Diocese of Sandomierz) has an archive, which stores various documents concerning the history of this institution. The materials from this archive were rarely used by historians. Only the ones who dealt with regional history were interested in the above mentioned materials. A parish priest from Klimontów Wawrzyniec Kukliński (1828-1912) published the content of the most important documents in the years 1909-1911. This content was the basis for writing an amateur treatise on the history of the town, where in 1626 the parish was erected. From the beginning of the twentieth century, the documentation stored at the parish church was damaged, some materials were lost. The author therefore undertook the effort to professionally organize the archival materials that are stored in the parish of Klimontów. Two fonds: Documents of the Roman Catholic Parish in Klimontów (documents since 1626) and Parish registers of Klimontów (since 1667) are connected with the parish office. These two fonds were divided into individual archival units, mainly based on chronological criteria. Apart from the materials closely related to the activities of the parish, the archive includes an incomplete collection of the documents which belonged to the monastery of the Dominicans in Klimontów. That collection was brought to the parish archive in unclear circumstances, possibly just after the dissolution of the monastery in 1901. It is a closed fond, which includes diverse documents from the years 1418-1863. It should be noted that this fold also contains a signifi cant number of documents relating to the salaries of the parish in Olbierzowice, the patronage of which was granted to the monastery of the Dominicans under Jan Zbigniew Ossoliński’s foundation privilege of 1613. The parish archive also includes the books which are the remnants of the once prosperous parish library.
- ItemArchiwum parafii w Zielonkach. Dzieje i zasób(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Protsyk, Anna; Bulak, JanArtykuł prezentuje dzieje archiwum podkrakowskiej parafii Zielonki pw. Narodzenia Najświętszej Maryi Panny i szczegółowo omawia zgromadzony w nim zasób. W 2022 roku zakończono proces porządkowania i opracowywania zbiorów, w wyniku czego powstał niniejszy artykuł. Parafia w Zielonkach powstała w XIII wieku, jednak dokumenty dotyczące jej najdawniejszych dziejów znajdują się w aktach krakowskiej kapituły katedralnej i Uniwersytetu Krakowskiego. Obecny zasób archiwalny obejmuje dokumenty od XVIII wieku dotyczące parafii, na którą składały się wsie: Zielonki, Bibice, Witkowice, Tonie, Garlica, Górka Narodowa, Wola Zachariaszowska i część Pękowic. Starsze archiwalia zaginęły podczas I wojny światowej. Anny. Oprócz wyżej wymienionych, w artykule pokrótce opisano dzieje zieloneckiej kancelarii parafialnej. W aneksie dołączonym do artykułu zaprezentowano inwentarz archiwalny. The article presents the history of the archives of the parish of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Zielonki near Kraków, and discusses in detail its accumulated resources. In 2022, the process of organizing and developing the collection was completed, resulting in this article. Publications based on documents of this provenance have so far been issued infrequently, although in recent years somewhat more frequently, so that there is a growing familiarity with the contents of the archive. The Zielonki parish was established in the 13th century, but documents relating to its earliest history can be found in the records of the Kraków Cathedral Chapter and the University of Kraków. The current archival holdings include documents from the 18th century on the parish, which consisted of villages: Zielonki, Bibice, Witkowice, Tonie, Garlica, Górka Narodowa, Wola Zachariaszowska and part of Pękowice. Older archives were lost during World War I. The most impressive collection contains the record books, almost complete since 1797. Also preserved, and very valuable, are chronicles from 1878–1932, the book of the Brotherhood of St Anne kept since the late 18th century, a sizeable collection of visitations and inventory records, and economic documents from the 19th and 20th centuries. In total, the archive includes 389 units produced between 1709 and 2019. These documents are also valuable because of the close relationship that, until the early 20th century, linked the Zielonki parish with the University of Kraków (Jagiellonian University) and the Kraków Collegiate Church of St Anne. In addition to the aforementioned issues, the article also briefly describes the history of the Zielonki parish chancellery. An appendix accompanying the article presents the archival inventory.
- ItemArs predicandi. Wybitni kaznodzieje konwentu kraśnickiego(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Pietrzykowski, JanThe article presents an outline of the issues connected with the Canons Regular preaching, including the profiles of the most outstanding preachers and the topics covered in their sermons. The study of the achievements of the Canons Regular preachers led to the conclusion that, in comparison with other religious orders boasting the most outstanding preachers in their ranks in Poland, the contribution of the Canons Regular of Lateral in this field is not very impressive. They are not among the well-known defenders of the Catholic faith against the attacks of the dissenters, they are not seen among the chaplains at royal or magnate courts either. In addition, the representatives of this order are noticed quite late among the camp’s preachers who played an important role in the military pastoral care. Nevertheless, preachers from the Cracow congregation of the Canons Regular occupied a prominent place among a large number of male orders in the lands of Poland and Lithuania. They were frequently active outside their own abbey or provostries.

Tą drogą powstawały m.in. biblioteki kapitulne. Chapters of canons also today contribute to the preservation and creation of human and, above all, Christian culture. A significant factor in the preservation and creation of the aforementioned cultural heritage is the chapter libraries, which were established similarly to the book collections of the vast majority of religious congregations. The Catholic Church has always recommended embracing science to its priests. Chapter libraries, among others, were built in this very spirit. The law of the provincial synod in Piotrków in 1589, recommending the establishment of libraries at cathedrals, was only a reminder to Polish chapters, as they already had their libraries by then. The subject of this article is to present the institution of the canonical library in the Canon Law aspect. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate that chapter libraries are undoubtedly a valuable aid and intellectual resource for canons to carry out their tasks in liturgical worship and teaching. The existence of chapter libraries has its consistent canonical legitimacy, especially in the provisions of chapter statutes. Such a defined research intention was realized through a thorough search of the existing Canon Law, especially the statutes of the canonical chapters. The analysis of the listed sources made it possible to achieve specific scientific objectives. First, the author’s canonical definition of the chapter library and its goals and objectives were constructed. Second, the fundamental issue of library resources was discussed. Third, the canonical obligation for chapters to have their own library was resolved.
- ItemBiblioteka kolegium jezuitów w Lublinie i jej losy(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2018) Dymmel, Anna; Dymmel, PiotrBiblioteka kolegium jezuitów w Lublinie powstała w 1584 r. Sukcesywnie powiększana darami, zakupami, twórczością jezuitów i produkcją własnej drukarni liczyła w chwili kasaty zakonu 5.000-7.000 dzieł. Należała do grupy największych bibliotek jezuickich w Polsce. Znajdowały się w niej dzieła teologiczne, filozoficzne, historyczne, matematyczne, ponadto polityczne, prawne, do nauki szkolnej, medyczne, traktaty polemiczne, zbiory kazań i mów. Jednak część zbiorów (prawdopodobnie ok. 500 książek) znalazło się w bibliotece szkoły powstałej w miejsce kolegium jezuickiego i dzieliło losy szkolnego księgozbioru. W 1919 r. księgozbiór po gimnazjum lubelskim przekazany został do biblioteki im. Hieronima Łopacińskiego, chociaż faktycznie trafił tam dopiero po II wojnie światowej. Obecnie według katalogu w zbiorach specjalnych Biblioteki Wojewódzkiej znajdują się 94 druki pochodzące z biblioteki pojezuickiej. Znaczna część zbiorów, bo ok. 3000 tomów została złożona w katedrze i w chwili przeniesienia Bobolanum do Lublina w okresie międzywojennym została włączona do jej biblioteki. The Library of the Jesuit College in Lublin was established in 1584. The collection successively increased thanks to gifts, purchases, Jesuit works and publications from its own printing house. At the time of the dissolution of the order, it included 5.000-7.000 works. It was one of the largest Jesuit libraries in Poland. It contained theological, philosophical, historical, mathematical, political, legal and medical works; school textbooks; polemical treatises; collections of sermons and talks. There were various types of libraries in the college of Lublin. The most important one, available to monks, was a home library (also called a common library). In addition, there were libraries and book collections related to different offices and functions; they were called special or specialized. There were at least 12 special libraries in Lublin. At first, the Library of the Lublin Jesuits was not particularly distinguished from other religious houses. However, in the middle of the 18th century, the common library hall was renovated and decorated. Thanks to this, it acquired a decorative character, arousing the admiration of visitors. The book collection was probably also arranged in subject sections. Unfortunately, the old catalogues have not survived, and we know about their existence from bookplates. After the dissolution of the Jesuits, the Library of Lublin did not attract much interest, although the Commission of National Education decided that the collection should be transferred to school libraries. Both the building of the library and the collection gradually deteriorated. However, some books of the collection (probably around 500) were placed in the library of the primary school established in the former Jesuit College. In 1919, the collection of the Jesuit Library was donated to Hieronim Łopaciński Library, although it was not transferred there until after World War II. Currently, according to the catalogue, in the special collections of the Provincial Library, there are 94 books from the Jesuit Library. A large part of the collection – about 3.000 volumes – was deposited in the cathedral, and at the time of transferring Bobolanum to Lublin in the interwar period, it was incorporated into the Bobolanum Library.
- ItemBiblioteki kapituł katedralnych w Gnieźnie i Poznaniu w XV i pocz. XVI wieku(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2014) Tafiłowski, PiotrThe article presents the role of books in two important chapter centres of the former Poland, Gniezno and Poznań, in the period between the 1430s and the 1530s. It is based on the source extracts from the chapter records made by Boleslaw Ulanowski. The aim of this paper is, apart from the presentation of author’s findings, a summary and systematization of the information about libraries of the chapters, which to some extent has already been introduced into science. The article is divided into two parts. The first focuses on the library of Gniezno, the other Poznań. Each of the two parts begins with the issues of the premises in which the collections were deposited. Next, the author continues to discuss in detail the issues of increasing the book collection (gifts and testamentary legacies), its content, maintenance, and borrowing as well as carers and users, both from inside the chapter, as well as outside it. The source quotations, given in extenso, play an important role; they have not been mentioned in the literature since B. Ulanowski’s publication. The introductory part of the paper discusses the previous literature on the issues of the Polish cathedral chapter libraries.
- ItemBiblioteki naukowe w procesie transformacji(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2016) Michniewicz-Wanik, KrystynaStoring the produced knowledge and managing it with the use of new technologies is a big challenge for libraries. The transformation of research libraries, as a continuous adaptation of services to the changing needs of users, requires, apart from modern IT tools, the reconstruction of the organizational culture. The theory of the organization (the method of change management) indicates the important role of leaders, who should have a vision of the future of libraries, taking account of how higher education functions as a whole and the ability to positively influence the staff while achieving new goals.
- ItemBiblioteki Wydziału Prawa i Nauk Społeczno-Ekonomicznych KUL w okresie II Rzeczpospolitej(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Nowakowska, MonikaDuring the interwar period at the Faculty of Law and Social-Economic Sciences of the Catholic University of Lublin, there were three main sectional libraries: legal, economic and social. In these libraries there were book collections, also referred to as libraries, assigned to a particular seminar. They were treated as research aid for employees and students. Initially, they were supervised by professors, who decided on the shape of the collection as well as the selection of library staff. Over time, there appeared a position of librarian who managed the collections of all the seminary libraries. In the 1930s librarians were assigned to each section separately; and they were responsible, among others, for cataloguing books and periodicals, making the collection available, providing research information, repairing damaged books, doing bookkeeping and arranging duty hours for scholarship holders. Seminar book collections increased as new books were bought and donated. The most important donations were books offered by the Main Library of the University of Lublin and Professor A. Szymański, a lecturer from the Faculty of Law and Social-Economic Sciences.
W. Urbana. Święcenia kapłańskie otrzymał 28 czerwca 1936 roku we Lwowie. Zmarł 13 grudnia 1983 roku we Wrocławiu. The Archdiocesan Archives in Wrocław and other cultural institutions of the archdiocese boast a wealth of historical sources. These resources have been collected essentially since the first centuries of the Wroclaw Bishopric. One of the most outstanding directors of the institutions in question was undoubtedly Bishop Wincenty Urban, who served as director of the Archdiocesan Archives, the Chapter Library and the Archdiocesan Museum in Wrocław from 1946 to 1983. The main task he undertook as head of these institutions was to rebuild them after their destruction during World War II. The archival, library and museum aids still operating today were also developed by Bishop W. Urban. In his research, he focused on compiling the documentation gathered at the Archdiocesan Archives in Wrocław and the history of the Catholic Church in Lower Silesia. He is the author of over 500 scientific publications.Urban was born in 1911 in Grodzisk Dolny near Przeworsk. He was ordained priest on 28 June 1936 in Lviv. In 1960, he received the episcopal sacrament, and from 1974 to 1976, as chapter vicar, he was the head of the Church of Wrocław. He died on 13 December 1983 in Wrocław.
