- ItemConceptualisation of Emotions(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2023) Gruchoła, MałgorzataThe objective of this article is the conceptualisation, in line with Steven Gordon’s classification, of primary emotions: happiness, fear, sadness, and anger, together with “background emotions,” and social emotions: empathy, compassion (and self-conscious emotions: a sense of guilt, shame, pride) in social sciences, with the underlying assumption of biological foundations and cultural conditions of emotions (the theory of “cultural scripts” by Norbert Elias, “feeling rules” by Arlie Hochschild). Theoretical conceptualisations of emotions are presented, viewed from the perspective of anthropologists, cultural experts, sociologists, psychologists and linguists. What is offered are descriptions of manifestations of emotions, ways of their expression, physical symptoms, degrees of intensity, crucial areas, mental and physical consequences, as well as their functions.
- ItemEmotions and Education: Media Representations in the Discourse on School Closures in Polish and British Internet Portals(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2023) Gruchoła, MałgorzataThe aim of the article is to present the representations of emotions (happiness, anger, sadness, fear, worry, stuckness, compassion, dumbing, stagnation, humiliation, sense of guilt, hope, hate, sense of privilege solidarity, boredom, banality), neighbourly solidarity in the texts of the opinion-forming portals Polityka (PL) and The Spectator (UK), referring to school closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and their media representations in the public (the perspective of a teacher, school headmaster, member of the government, expert) and private domain (the perspective of a student and parent), in the processual approach (a catalogue of events), in the context of technological changes (distant learning), as well as socio-cultural (human relationships, domestic violence) and economic (social benefits) contexts. Our hypothesis is that, in line with the concept of the culture of fear by Frank Furedi, the way the internet content is created and construed is supposed to evoke the emotion of fear. We performed a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the content of 78 articles published in Polityka and 12 in The Spectator, between 1 March 2020 and 30 July 2020, found with the use of a search engine. We observed at least three levels of information sources on emotions in the studied groups: the main character of the article, the one who experiences emotions (perspective of the sender); the author/editor of the article, who does evaluation and interpretation (perspective of the gate-keeper) and the reader (perspective of the addressee). On these levels, emotions can result from their literal identification; from an interpretation of a given situation, from the situational context (contextual emotions) and from the non-verbal clues and physical reactions of the organism. The hypothesis was partially confirmed. Despite the fact the school closures, as represented by the media, generates mostly the emotion of fear, the emotion prevalent in the discourse on the consequences of school closures and on the evaluation of remote education is sadness (Polityka) and compassion (The Spectator). However, the dominant emotion, both in the public-private and public domain, is the one of sadness.
- ItemFakt kulturowy i problem kryteriów jego oceny(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Kiereś, HenrykArtykuł podejmuje problem oceny faktów kulturowych.

- ItemMechanisms of Generating Emotions in Audio-Based Media(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2023) Wójciszyn-Wasil, AnetaAudio-based content is considered to be extremely intimate and easily evoking emotions in listeners. The aim of this article is to determine the affective mechanisms used in audio productions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis focuses on radio programmes of public and commercial radio stations and the broadly defined audio media segment: podcasts and streaming services from Europe, the USA, and Australia. The content created during the so-called first wave of the pandemic (March–June 2020) was considered. Sound recordings are analysed in terms of four aspects related to the structure of audio content: words, music, acoustic effects, and silence. This study aims to present the perspective of a broadcaster who designs the audience’s affective reactions and the unique nature of radio journalists’ work during the pandemic. The study confirmed the use of mechanisms intended to intensify and regulate emotions in audio productions in all of the analysed areas. This is especially true for emotionally-charged lexis, voice expressions, selection of musical repertoire and solutions applied in sound editing. The importance of silence as an acoustic equivalent of distance, void and isolation is emphasised. We put forward a list of mechanisms behind generating and modulating emotions in audio-based media. The study shows how sound, as diverse as it is, conveys emotions in the media.

- ItemNawrócenie jako źródło poznania. René Girard i jego teoria mimetyczna(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Niewiadomski, JózefRadykalizm myśli Rene Girarda prowokuje. Podczas pracy nad swym pierwszym głównym dziełem odkrył u siebie te same przemiany w kontekście samopoznania i prawdy, jakie opisywali u ich bohaterów autorzy powieści, które on analizował. Kilka lat później doświadczenie egzystencjalnego kryzysu związanego z możliwą chorobą nowotworową prowadzi do nawrócenia religijnego i powrotu do wspólnoty kościelnej. Artykuł rekonstruuje teorię mimetyczną jako owoc doświadczeń konwersji, porównując Girarda do św. Augustyna.
- ItemOcena stresu wywołanego traumatycznym zdarzeniem w grupie ratowników medycznych i strażaków: przyczynek do rozumienia kultury pracy(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Tatala, MałgorzataCelem niniejszej pracy było zgłębienie problematyki oceny subiektywnego stresu wywołanego traumatycznym zdarzeniem (ang. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD) przez ratowników medycznych i strażaków. Badaniem objęto 195 mężczyzn (n = 99 ratowników medycznych). Do badań użyto Zrewidowanej Skali Wpływu Zdarzeń (ang. Impact Event Scale-Revised, IES–R).
- ItemOn the Debate Between the Paulines and the Rabbis in Late Antiquity Around the Body and Sexuality and Its Significance to the Present Day, Through D. Boyarin’s Postmodern View(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Mihaely, ZoharThe goal of the present paper is to formulate a concise framework for part of Daniel Boyarin’s work which he is most known for, namely his analysis of sexuality in late antiquity Judaism and the critique of contemporary culture he eventually derived from it, above all his objections to the idea of the Jewish nation-state. Within the brief scope here I intend to provide the reader with a simple roadmap for orienting oneself in Boyarin’s relevant literature. Boyarin, a Jewish-American scholar, traces rabbinic, Jewish-Hellenic, and Pauline texts that he believes were part of one arc of Jewish culture in Palestine of late antiquity, and reveals the discourse that was at the center of this one Jewish culture, namely that the famous debate between Judaism and Christianity was essentially over the interpretation of the physical body and sexuality in the Bible, a debate during which critical cultural decisions were made that still have an impact on Western society today in the realms of gender and identity. Through his original “cultural reading” that employs critical current postmodern methods, Boyarin demonstrates that both have complex ethical and political issues, such as rigid hierarchies, colonialism, and racism, but they also have a lot of promise, namely that by examining them side by side, the possibility of finding a more just alternative for our present and future is increased, through mutual correction of each other.
- ItemPeace in Times of War: Girard’s Mimetic Theory Complemented by Gandhi’s Ethics of Nonviolence(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Palaver, Wolfgang
- ItemPerspectives of Cultural Studies (Conceptualisation of Emotions in the Discourse of Cultural Studies)(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2023) Gruchoła, MałgorzataThe aim of this article is to conceptualise emotions in the discourse of cultural studies, which were initiated in the 1970s. American discourse focuses on the role of emotions in shaping individuality and subjectivity (emotional labour), while European discourse focuses on their historically and culturally conditioned constructs. Even though they have been regarded in academic discourse as opposed to reason, today it is believed that emotions determine cognitive processes, and cognitive processes can have an effect on emotions. The article discusses theoretical concepts related to emotions: biological determinism/ biological reductionism, socio-cultural constructivism and deconstructionism, affective turn, and culture of emotions.
- ItemProtection of Roadside Shrines and Crosses in Poland Against The Background of Historical Events and in Light of Established Legal Acts(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Żak-Kulesza, MałgorzataRoadside crosses and shrines are a characteristic element of the Polish landscape. Small sacred objects are intertwined with history and the cultural context of Polish countryside and cities, arising from the need of faith, and have manifested piety for generations. Many crosses and shrines were erected as mementos of important national events, uprisings, war skirmishes, independence spurts that took place in the 19th and in the first half of the 20th centuries, commemorating national anniversaries, for instance 1918, anniversaries of Christianization of Poland, jubilees of historic events. They were also built upon old mass graves of victims of bygone epidemics. In the context of historic events, objects of small sacral architecture were met with harassment and repressions. Therefore, after regaining independence legal initiatives were undertaken by the state and the Church to save these objects. Unfortunately, not always did this type of object receive sufficient legal protection or proper appraisal. In documents they are present in the background. That is why ethnographic studies are often the only way to save their memory, and preserve the image of old crosses, statues, and shrines.
- ItemPrzemoc w konsekwencjach pandemii COVID-19: analiza społeczno-kulturowa(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Gruchoła, MałgorzataW momencie kryzysu, którego przyczyną może być katastrofa naturalna (np. pandemia COVID-19), każda grupa społeczna szuka kozła ofiarnego (teoria René Girarda). Mechanizm ten w artykule obrazuje liczba zgonów z powodu SARS-CoV-2 traktowanych jako ofiara kolektywna. Celem artykułu było zbadanie źródeł i form przemocy oraz zidentyfikowanie kozła ofiarnego w postrzeganiu pandemii COVID-19 na podstawie 24. raportów Eurobarometru: Public opinion monitoring in the time of COVID-19, obejmujących okres od marca 2020 roku do czerwca 2021 roku.
- ItemThe Body-Organism Difference as a Bridge between Particular Sciences and Philosophy in Understanding Human Person(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Pańpuch, ZbigniewThe article copes with a plurality of sciences in general and focuses in the human-related sciences, which present different cognitive results. There is difficult to co-ordinate them because of the difference in methods, aims and formal objects of sciences, whereas the material object of various sciences - the real man exists as the only subject, with a definite and clearly determined substance. In a consequence, they produce different concepts of man. Is it possible to co-ordinate or to reconcile these various information about human being, especially these from particular sciences with the philosophical anthropology? A general understanding of the biological organism is of this kind that it is an object of science, but the notion of organism has been present in philosophy quite a long time—from the ancient times. Thus, an outline of the problem appears, namely the distinction between the organism, as an object of possible experience (fundamentally internal, but also external) and the body in the metaphysical sense, as an sub-ontic element of the human being. From the metaphysical point of view it seems (and that is my proposition or may be only a point mentioned anywhere by some authors, which I would like especially stress), that this whole—consisting of its organic parts, all unified in systemic reciprocal dependencies and various relations—is only accidental to human substance. This human substance—is a person. This specific “set of accidentals” constituting the human organism is subordinated (subjected) to the substance and exists in it and by it. Such an understanding of the organism and more precisely described distinction between it and the body can determine the field of interest of philosophy and other sciences, and simultaneously create a bridge between them. Human organism could be a good object of various research in the field of particular sciences. But the scientists should not forget about metaphysic and existential background of the human organism. From the other hand, the philosophers looking for the necessary causes of the human being have to take in consideration this necessary and specific set of accidentals (a human organism) and the particular knowledge of it provided by the scientists.
- ItemTo Avoid a Scapegoat Mechanism. Perception of COVID-19 Vaccination among Inhabitants of EU – a Study Based on the Reports of the Eurobarometer(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Sławek-Czochra, MałgorzataFocusing the anger of the community on a single individual the scapegoat makes it possible to stabilise it on new terms and to emerge from the chaos into which it falls in the pandemic. Instead of scapegoating, the focus should be on solving the problem itself with, for example, mass vaccination against Covid-19. The media play a vital role in promoting appropriate attitudes and behaviour during the pandemic. The aim of the article is an analysis primarily aimed at demonstrating the relationship between fears (health, social and economical) and assessments of COVID-19 vaccination and media information, based on research of the Eurobarometer, carried out in all member countries of the EU in the period from the 20th of March 2020 to the 30th of June 2021. Three hypotheses were tested regarding EU inhabitants' assessments and fears of vaccination and the media information that differentiates between vaccination enthusiasts, realists and sceptics. Applied were a quantitative analysis of the content of reports, a qualitative analysis of the contents, comparative and analytical descriptive methods.
- ItemWhy American Education Today Ought to be Counter-Cultural(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Hancock, Curtis L.In his article, the author points out the gradual domination of leftists in universities, which eventually affected all American institutions. This is very evident today in the leftist attitudes of the media, the legal profession, the bureaucracy, the government, and even the clergy. The author argues that because of this transformation, if one wants to assess the state of American society, one must address what has happened in the universities. As universities have normalized Marxist cultural principles and attitudes, the critic of higher education must expose these Marxist tendencies in schools. Because this Marxist tendency now dominates university culture, it must be demanded that higher education reform today be countercultural.
