Paul Bourget, un (anti)moderne ? De la « révolution » psychologique au roman « réactionnaire »

dc.description.abstract	À partir de l’évolution littéraire de Paul Bourget, cet article cherche à explorer le pivotement qui s’opère entre sa critique psychologique marquée par une conscience de la décadence et ses romans psychologiques à visée sociale où l’auteur s’efforce de mettre en évidence des lois morales. Le concept même de révolution, que certaines critiques avaient utilisé pour qualifier les romans de Bourget, acquiert dans les discours du romancier psychologue une dimension sociale et moralisante qui constitue la force de ses romans dits « à idées ». Entre une volonté d’innovation et une réaction anti-révolutionnaire, voire antimoderne, les romans de Bourget pourraient se révéler comme une pensée en évolution qui cherche, tel que le précise l’auteur, à déconstruire la Révolution pour restaurer l’unité organique du corps social. Based on Paul Bourget’s literary development, this article seeks to explore the shift that takes place between his psychological criticism, marked by an awareness of decadence, and his socially-oriented psychological novels, in which the author endeavours to highlight moral laws. The very concept of revolution, which some critics had used to describe Bourget’s novels, takes on a social and moralizing dimension in the psychological novelist’s discourse, which is the strength of his so-called “novels with ideas”. Between a desire for innovation and an anti revolutionary, even anti-modern reaction, Bourget’s novels could be seen as an evolving thought that seeks, as the author points out, to deconstruct the Revolution in order to restore the organic unity of the social body.
