dc.description.abstract	Tsar Alexander I tried to limit the influence of the Holy See on the Catholic Church in his States. A few years before his death he began to be more benevolent towards Catholics, and to see the Papacy as a potential partner of his policy. He even purposed to bring about a union of the Russian Orthodox Church with the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Leo XII expected a lot of this monarch. However, Alexander’s successor, Nicholas I, limited his relations with Rome to the minimum. He strengthened control over the Roman Catholic clergy and began preparations for the abolition of the Greek Catholic Church. Mgr Tommaso Bernetti, the papal extraordinary ambassador to the coronation of Nicholas, collected up-to-date information about the situation of the Catholic Church in the Russian Empire. Leo XII convened three times the Congregation of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Aﬀairs in order to analyze the most important issues in relations with Russia. He gradually grasped the intentions of Nicholas I but he was in no position to induce a change of his policy.	pl
dc.description.abstract	Car Aleksander I starał się ograniczyć wpływ Stolicy Apostolskiej na Kościół katolicki w swoich państwach. Kilka lat przed śmiercią zaczął okazywać większą życzliwość katolikom, a w papiestwie dostrzegać potencjalnego partnera swojej polityki. Powziął nawet ideę unii Rosyjskiej Cerkwi Prawosławnej z Kościołem Rzymskokatolickim. Papież Leon XII wiązał z tym monarchą wielkie nadzieje. Następca Aleksandra, Mikołaj I, ograniczył stosunki z Rzymem do minimum. Wzmocnił kontrolę nad duchowieństwem rzymskokatolickim i rozpoczął przygotowania do likwidacji Kościoła greckokatolickiego. Leon XII wydelegował na koronację Mikołaja nadzwyczajnego ambasadora, mgr. Tommaso Bernetti, polecając mu zebranie aktualnych informacji o sytuacji Kościoła na tym terenie. Trzykrotnie zwoływał Kongregację Nadzwyczajnych Spraw Kościelnych w celu przeanalizowania najważniejszych problemów w relacjach w Rosją. Stopniowo zdał sobie sprawę z intencji Mikołaja I, ale nie był w stanie wpłynąć na zmianę jego polityki.	pl
