Immanuel Kant’s ethics is the ethics of human dignity. He took the philosophical reflection on human dignity to a level that still shapes the authoritative point of reference both in the theory and philosophy of law and in legal dogmatics. Matthias Mahlmann, professor at the University of Zurich, lawyer and philosopher, co-originator of the universal grammar of morality and law, has researched the problem of the relationship between Immanuel Kant’s concept of practical reason and the mentalistic concept of ethics and law. According to Matthias Mahlmann, innate morality may help explain the human propensity for rational behaviour in the Kantian sense. Continuing Kant’s findings, Mahlmann also made an interesting attempt to justify human dignity in humanist terms. The presentation of this creative continuation is the primary goal of this article. Moreover, an in-depth study of Immanuel Kant’s justification of human dignity is also recommendable considering the frequently observed trivialization of his thought and a detached approach to it, especially among the proponents of natural law. In order to enter a dialogue in today’s pluralistic world, the humanist dimension of human dignity should be sought, which highlights the idea of human autotelic nature based only on anthropological considerations. This humanist notion of human dignity is clearly related to religious theories and can be supported by them. It is important, however, that the notion can be justified independently of religious sources, and that it is self-sufficient, at least theoretically.pl
