Abstract

NFP includes all family planning methods that base on identifying the fertile time and this knowledge can be used to plan or avoid pregnancy. These methods are highly effective, when used consistently, but it requires periodic abstinence and partner cooperation to prevent pregnancy. The article discusses: the value and scope of NFP, who are the users, why they use it, how they evaluate it, their difficulties, why they resign, what they gain, how to teach NFP. Despite difficulties the majority of users found NFP method satisfactory. Couples describe their perceptions of the positive effects of natural methods on marriage (enhance the couple’s relationship), communication patterns, sexual satisfaction, personal and family life. Many couples who are not currently using NFP indicated that they are interested in doing so in the future, either to avoid pregnancy or to conceive a child. Providers of the NFP services need to become fully informed about NFP to adequately present all the available options co their clients.
