Abstract
Kościół pw. Nawrócenia św. Pawła w Sandomierzu należy do najstarszych świątyń sandomierskich. Budowla zachwyca nie tylko swoją architekturą, ale przede wszystkim wystrojem wnętrza, które po przemianach w poł. XVII i na pocz. XVIII w. zachowało się do dziś w niemal niezmienionej formie. W barokowej dekoracji wnętrza uwagę zwracają liczne inskrypcje. Pojawiają się charakterystyczne dla epoki formy plastyczno-literackie: emblematy. Dlatego w pracy postawiono tezę, że źródłem inspiracji dla malowideł były druki nowożytne, zarówno teksty, jak i grafiki. Dotychczasowe fragmentaryczne opisy naukowe wnętrza kościoła sandomierskiego i próby odczytania programu ikonograficznego postawiły głównie hipotezy, które w świetle współczesnych badań oraz przeprowadzonych prac konserwatorskich obiektu nie znajdują potwierdzenia. Zły stan zachowania zabytku, XIX-wieczne przemalowania, ale także brak dogłębnego i całościowego studium literatury przedmiotu przyczyniły się do utrwalenia w publikacjach błędnych opinii dotyczących wystroju tej świątyni. Całościowe podejście do opisywanego zagadnienia, z uwzględnieniem wyników badań historycznych nad przemianami artystycznymi obiektu, filologicznych w zakresie związków literatury i sztuki sakralnej w okresie nowożytnym oraz historii sztuki, szczególnie co do tradycji obrazowania i proweniencji stylu, a także analiza dotychczas pomijanych przedstawień wypełniło lukę w stanie wiedzy o barokowym wystroju kościoła św. Pawła w Sandomierzu.
The Church of the Conversion of St. Paul in Sandomierz is one of the oldest temples in the town. The building delights its visitors not only with its architecture, but, above all, with the design of its interior, which, since the transformations in the middle of the 17th century and the early 18th century, has survived almost unchanged to this day. A prominent feature of the baroque interior decoration are numerous inscriptions. There appear the artistic and literary forms characteristic of the era: emblems. Therefore, the thesis is propounded that the source of inspiration for the paintings were prints of the modern age, both texts and graphics. The previous, fragmentary scientific descriptions of the interior of the Sandomierz church and attempts to explain its iconographic programme have put forward hypotheses that generally have not been confirmed in the light of modern research and restoration works carried out in the building. Not only nineteenth-century overpaintings and the poor overall condition of the monument, but also the lack of an in-depth and comprehensive study of the subject literature have contributed to the consolidation of erroneous opinions in publications about the interior design of this temple. A holistic approach to the described issue – taking into account the results of historical research on the artistic transformations of the building; philological research concerning the relationship between literature and religious art in the modern period; art history, especially regarding the tradition of imagery and style provenance; and an analysis of previously omitted performances – has filled the gap in knowledge about the Baroque interior of St. Paul's Church in Sandomierz.
