- ItemAfrahat, Mowa XVI – O narodach, które zastąpiły naród (Demonstratio XVI: De Gentibus quae Loco Populi Suffectae Sunt, PSyr 1, 760-784)(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Uciecha, AndrzejMowa O narodach, które zastąpiły naród jest szesnastym wykładem w całym dziele Afrahata. Mędrzec perski podejmuje temat Izraela i ludów pogańskich.

- ItemAntiochia Syryjska jako ośrodek ascezy i monastycyzmu w drugiej połowie IV w.(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2018) Szczur, PiotrThe article presents a particular phase in the evolution of Christian asceticism, as exemplified by the monastic-ascetic milieu of Syrian Antioch. The writings of John Chrysostom, Theodoret of Cyprus and Libanius, which all refer to ascetic and monastic life in Antioch and its environs in the second half of the fourth century, are examined. These analyses allow us to identify three types among Antiochian ascetics. First group described included lay inhabitants of Antioch, both male and female, who endeavored to conduct a deeper spiritual life; this group included also persons practicing syneisaktism – a specific mode of ascetic life in which female virgins consecrated to God lived together with men (especially clergy) practicing ascesis. The second group consisted of rustic ascetics, to wit both lay and clergy inhabitants of villages around Antioch who conduced an ascetic lifestyle. The third group were those ascetics who observed monastic (or semi-monastic) life in the Antiochian mountains, especially on Mount Silpios. Monks were held in considerably high esteem, enjoying great respect among the inhabitants of Antioch. This resulted in their occasionally ignoring the rules of detachment from the world and of solitary life, as they entertained visitors or guests and – for serious reasons (e.g. during the trial of inhabitants of Antioch following the tax rebellion in 387) – visited the city. Our analysis thus depicts Antioch and its vicinity as a center of ascetic and monastic life. The clear-cut conclusion that emerges is that pre-monastic and monastic forms of ascetic life both existed in Antioch in the second half of the fourth century.
- ItemAquileienses clerici quasi chorus beatorum habentur (Hieronim, Kronika, rok 374). Przykład życia religijnego duchownych pod koniec IV wieku(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2018) Bastit-Kalinowska, AgnèsThe end of the fourth century sees the emergence, in the West, of several experiences of monastic life in the city for the bishop and a part of his presbyterium (Eusèbe of Vercelli, Martin of Tours, Paulin of Nola, Augustin of Hippo). A similar attempt, around the priest Chromace of Aquileia (before his episcopate, and maybe even later), is documented by some testimonies of Jerome from Stridon and Rufin from Aquileia for the years 370s. These testimonies are the object of the present study.

- ItemBarbarzyńcy w Vita Epifani Ennodiusza z Pawii(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Skibiński, TomaszThe article presents the image and the place of barbarians in the late-Roman society in the light of Vita Epifani by Ennodius (Magnus Felix Ennodius). The analysis of the work shows the world of the second half of the 5th century, co-created by Romans and the barbarians, in which the latter have their inalienable place. They are no longer guests and newcomers, but co-hosts and co-creators of the new community of the late antiquity. The image of individual barbarian groups is diverse: there are real partners of the Romans, concerned for the common good and supported by Roman advisors (eg Goths, Burgundians), but beside them are primitive, cruel and brutal Rugii, presented according to the stereotypical image of barbarism. All of them, however, are transformed under the influence of Epiphanius. Only occasionally, Ennodius indicates the difficulties in roman-barbaric integration resulting from difference of religion. Considering these qualities, Ennodius’ work appears as a call to the Roman clergy and aristocracy to work together with the new peoples present in the former Roman territories, and with their rulers.

- ItemBeatitudes in Juvencus’ Epic "Evangeliorum libri quattuor" – Philologically Analyzed and Poetically Translated(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Wintner, ViktorGaius Vettius Aquilinus Iuvencus is the author of the first biblical epic which is known as "Evangeliorum libri quattuor". It retells the Gospel story in classical hexameter in order to adapt its form to the literary aesthetics of the 4th century pagan society. Through the analysis of his poetic version of the beatitudes, this study aims to uncover and appraise the basic principles of his periphrastic technique, whether they apply to the form or content of the Matthean original. It shows that the author constantly tries to vary its syntax with the intention to disturb its monotonous regularity. He also promotes the value of heavenly rewards promised to Christians, providing them with sympathetic epithets and embellishes the original with stylistic figures such as alliteration or contrast. As for the content, the most significant change is the occasional insertion of author’s comments, the purpose of which is to provide the Matthean text with additional theological information that he might find missing. The study concludes with our free translation of this passage into iambic heptameter or fourteener.
- ItemBeda Czcigodny o wczesnym chorale gregoriańskim w Anglii (Historia ecclesiastica IV 24)(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Budzanowska-Weglenda, Dominika ŁucjaBeda Czcigodny (Wielebny), uczony mnich anglosaski i Doktor Kościoła z przełomu VII/VIII wieku, w słynnym dziele Historia ecclesiastica (IV 24) napisał o bracie zakonnym, Cedmonie. Wcześniej, gdy Cedmon pracował jako opiekun zwierząt pociągowych, unikał on świeckich śpiewów. Pobudzał w ten sposób ludzi do nawrócenia i umocnienia wiary.

- ItemBlood Revenge in Light of the Imago Dei in Genesis 9:6. Its Semantics and Pragmatics(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2020) Jančovič, JozefIn recent years, some scholars have claimed that God’s creation of humanity in the divine image (Gen 1:26-28) presents both a royal-functional reading and also the model of nonviolence that counters recurrent violence throughout the Hebrew Bible. This nonviolent reading of humanity created in God’s image disregards the mention of this concept at the end of the Flood Narrative in Gen 9:6. This article firstly takes into consideration the proximate context and semantics of the sentence in Gen 9:6 expressed through its structural, linguistic and syntactic aspects. Moreover, the pragmatics of this saying will be analyzed through the investigative criteria of discursive analysis to better identify how semantic meaning and other contextual features underpin what is communicated by this challenging utterance.
