    A Book for the King. Some Reflections on the Situation of the Roman Population and the Preservation of the Heritage of Ancient Civilization in Gallaecia and Lusitania in the 5th and 6th Centuries

    Saint Martin of Braga, active in Gallaecia in the second half of the 6th century, referred to cardinal virtues in several of his writings, in accordance with the teachings of Seneca that he knew well. One of these works was Formula vitae honestae, given to Miro, king of Suebi and Gallaecia. The existence of Roman and “barbarian” elites in the kingdom of Suebi, capable of understanding the moral teachings of St. Martin of Braga in the 6th century, prompts reflection on the continuity of Roman culture and heritage of ancient civilisation in 160 years after the invasion of Hispania by Germanic tribes. The article contains some remarks on the preservation of Roman civilisation among the Roman elites in the times of the existence and development of the kingdom of Suebi , and on the processes of romanization of the tribal elites. The problem of the assimilation of the local population and Germanic newcomers, which was very interesting and specific to Gallaecia under the reign of Suebi, was also discussed.

    A Comprehensive Introduction to Synodality: Reconfiguring Ecclesiology and Ecclesial Practice

    This article contributes to the growing body of literature on synodality with a comprehensive introduction. Firstly, the author observes the link between the synodal approach promoted by Pope Francis and the Second Vatican Council. With the help of Myriam Wijlens’ term ‘reconfiguration,’ he then discusses the theological foundations of a synodal understanding of the Church. Synodality recontextualizes the bishop’s responsibility by situating it within the community of the faithful. In addition, as the Holy Spirit is the main actor in the synodal process, all the faithful, including bishops, have to listen to what He is saying, a task that requires discerning the spirits. In the third place, the author focuses on the reconfiguration of ecclesial practice. In a synodal way of proceeding, the traditional virtue of obedience is complemented by various other virtues, such as speaking out, listening with interest, and a deep openness to the Spirit’s newness. Finally, the author identifies practical issues that need attention.

    A Noble Pity. ἔλεος in Plato’s Philosophy

    This article examines Plato’s remarks on compassion to show that his apparent rejection of this emotion is, in fact, a rejection of a kind of ill-founded compassion. In the first section, I argue that his criticisms in the Apology and the Republic are not directed to compassion per se, but to instances in which this emotion betrays false beliefs and is felt in improper contexts. Thus, Plato’s criticisms leave room for an appropriate type of pity that should be grounded on true beliefs about harm, virtue, and justice. In the second section, I address Plato’s remarks on compassion in the Gorgias and the Laws, where he asserts that it should be felt towards the unpunished wrongdoer. I argue that such a disposition to feel compassion appropriately - which I have called a “noble compassion”, akin to the “noble anger” (θυμός γενναῖος) present in the Laws – is an important feature of the character of an ideal citizen. Thus, for Plato, compassion could contribute to psychological well-being and social order. By inspecting the cognitive and contextual conditions that enable a noble compassion in Platonic philosophy, this article aims to contribute to the study of a crucial emotion both in Greek and Christian philosophy.

    Addressing Russian Threat. Changes to Defence Policies of the Nordic States After 2014

    The substantial deterioration of the security environment after Russian aggression against Ukraine and the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 was a catalyst for significant changes in the Nordic states’ approach to security and defence. Common perceptions of the Russian threat focused defence policies of the Nordic states around rebuilding total defence capabilities, which would combine military and civilian efforts. Besides these efforts to reinforce national capacity to defend against an armed attack, the Nordic states increased regional security and defence cooperation, along with cooperation with NATO, the EU and the United States. The article explores the developments in defence policies of the Nordic states that were a result of changes in the security environment caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine and the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014. It tries to discuss differences in national threat assessment, and then compare and contrast unique national approaches to defence policies that were adopted by the Nordic states. The conclusion conceptualizes unique features of the Nordic approach to defence stemming from the common threat to their security.

    Aktualizacja Słowa Bożego w przepowiadaniu

    Bez aktualizacji przepowiadanie gubi swój cel, staje się mało atrakcyjne, samo zaś słowo Boże postrzegane zostaje przez słuchaczy jako pozbawione swej zbawczej mocy i nieżyciowe. Opracowanie potwierdza te tezy. W artykule uporządkowano i syntetycznie przedstawiono najważniejsze zagadnienia związane z aktualizacją: teologiczne podstawy aktualizacji, główne zasady jej realizacji; biblijne modele aktualizacji jako wzorce dla współczesnego przepowiadania; proces aktualizacji. W zakończeniu zaś sformułowano opisową definicję aktualizacji.

    Ambiwalencja greckiej nadziei

    Artykuł jest próbą odtworzenia myślenia Greków o fenomenie nadziei. Stwierdzona zostaje wielopoziomowa jej ambiwalencja. Najpierw jako spodziewanie się albo czegoś dobrego, albo czegoś złego. Następnie jako nadzieja negatywna (w znaczeniu nieuzasadniona, nierozumna i prowadząca do zguby) bądź pozytywna (w znaczeniu uzasadniona, rozumna i umożliwiająca ocalenie). Na koniec jako nadzieja moralnie dobra bądź zła w zależności od etycznej oceny jej przedmiotu. Stwierdzona zostaje też korelacja strachu i nadziei. Postawiony zostaje problem odniesienia nadziei do czasu. W tym kontekście rozważane są poglądy Hezjoda, Tukidydesa, Platona, Arystotelesa i stoików.

    Ambiwalentne i problemowe relacje w sieciach krewnych: rekonesans

    Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań empirycznych na temat relacji ambiwalentnych i problemowych w sieciach krewnych kobiet i mężczyzn w trzech fazach życia: wczesnego dorosłego, dorosłego w średnim wieku i młodszego seniora, a także na temat tych ról rodzinnych, które są najbardziej narażone na doświadczanie ambiwalencji uczuć. Badania były prowadzone w 2021 roku na próbie 109 osób w wieku 20-69 lat, które umieszczały swoich żyjących krewnych w diagramach relacji bliskich emocjonalnie oraz problemowych. Relacje zostały wtórnie kategoryzowane jako wyłącznie bliskie, wyłącznie problemowe i ambiwalentne na podstawie pozycjonowania krewnych w diagramach. Uzyskane dane wskazują, że emocje w sieci krewnych różnią się w zależności od: stopnia pokrewieństwa, stopnia bliskości danej jednostki z krewnym/-ną oraz od fazy życia. Najbardziej narażone na ambiwalencję są diady: siostra–siostra, matka–córka, syn–ojciec, brat–brat, oraz relacja: syn–matka i siostra–brat. Ponadto, za problemowe uważane są relacje z ciociami i kuzynami. W ostatniej części opracowania podjęto próbę wskazania przyczyn „produkowania” ambiwalencji w tych węzłach sieci krewniaczej, wykorzystując m.in. teorię władzy-statusu Theodore D. Kempera.

    American Commonalities and Roots of European Integration

    This article looks deeply into the historical parallels between the American and European experiences of state integration, which have resulted in the United States of America and the European Union, respectively. It first defines the key international relations concept of state integration and compares American and European thought on the idea. It then turns to examine some of the highpoints in the history of integration in the American and European cases. Given the remarkable historical commonalties between the two processes, the article puts forward the idea of the American experience as a chief inspiration and source for European integration. It concludes by suggesting that without the historical example of the United States, as well as massive American post-war assistance to Europe, it is highly doubtful that European integration would have commenced when and as it did.

    Anger in Homiletic Teaching of Saint John Chrysostom. The Analysis of Homilies on Matthew

    The article is a case study of Saint John Chrysostom’s teaching on anger in his Homilies on Matthew. The author discusses only the wreath of a man, the question of God’s anger as a different research problem was omitted. Saint John Chrysostom uses two Greek nouns while describing anger: ἡ ὀργή and ὁ θυμός, which are used as synonyms without distinguishing any semantic differences between them. The preacher does not give a definition of the anger, but describes it as a passion (τό πάθος) and places it among other flaws – according to Plato’s classification – to passion of the spirited part of soul (thymoeides). He describes anger also as an illness, and by personalizing it, he says that anger is the devil. The preacher specifies many reasons for anger (jealousy, power, situation of a threat, tardiness, and devil’s action). He says also about the fatal effects of anger, which above all destroys human relations, harms spirituality, and leads to more serious misdemeanors (i.e. perjury, enmity, insult, fisticuff, and even murder). Because of that Chrysostom points out the anger prohibition expressed by Christ and Saint Paul, as well as the necessity of combating the anger, which is a crucial element of the Christian self-improvement. These efforts give spiritual fruits in the form of peace of heart and absolution of sins. The final part of the article represents an issue of justified anger which is not prohibited but also advisable against sinners, to improve their actions.

    Are We Embodied Souls?

    It is argued that Swinburne should stress the functional unity of soul and body under most healthy conditions. Too often, critics of substance dualism charge dualists with promoting a problematic bifurcation between soul and body. Swinburne’s work is defended against objections from Thomas Nagel. It is argued that Swinburne’s appeal to the first-person point of view is sound.

    Armia najeźdźców vs armia obrońców. Wernakularne prezentacje sił zbrojnych Ukrainy i Rosji w polskich cybermemach

    Agresja Rosji na Ukrainę w 2022 roku rezonuje na wielu płaszczyznach i w licznych wymiarach, szczególnie silnie absorbuje uwagę mieszkańców krajów sąsiadujących – w tym Polaków. Głównym celem artykułu było przedstawienie obrazów Rosji i Ukrainy kreślonych w polskim Internecie za pomocą internetowych memów obrazkowych. Ich rekonstrukcja pozwoliła na udzielenie odpowiedzi na pytanie, jak internauci w Polsce postrzegają obie strony konfliktu? W pracy zaprezentowano wyniki badań niereaktywnych, zrealizowanych za pomocą jakościowej analizy treści. Głównym problemem badawczym było pytanie o to, jak prezentowane są potencjały militarne Ukrainy i Rosji? Analiza 287 obiektów pozwoliła ex post na wyodrębnienie kilku obszarów. Odnosiły się one do: potencjału militarnego Rosji i Ukrainy, prezydentów państw jako zwierzchników sił zbrojnych, dowódców, wojsk i żołnierzy, sposobów prowadzenia walki oraz wsparcia cywilnego dla zaangażowania militarnego. Analiza pozyskanych obiektów pokazuje bipolarne prezentacje obu państw w cybermemach.

    Audiovisual Tactics of Resistance of the Polish Anti-Communist Opposition in the 1980s as Illustrated by Tomasz Łabędź’s Kalendarz Wojny (War Calendar)

    This study is an interdisciplinary presentation of the changing media paradigm of the Polish anti-communists opposition in the 1980s. The article, in particular, emphasizes the first production of the Polish émigré media institution Video Kontakt, titled War Calendar, directed by Tomasz Łabędź. Interpreted as an example of audiovisual tactics of resistance, his work employed subversion and counterpoint to expose the discursive hypocrisy of the communist regime in Poland. The article also discusses the support that Polish dissident groups received from the Western trade unions and government agencies leading to the ‘parallel society’ with its own communication potential.

    Augustine on Hope in Times of Suffering

    This article examines the way Augustine draws on the theological virtue of hope to address how people should live in times of suffering. Of the three theological virtues – faith, hope, and love – hope is the least explored theme in contemporary Augustinian scholarship. This article develops a framework for Augustine’s model of hope from his Enchiridion and then applies it to select Sermons and Letters. Through this, we see that for Augustine hope does not represent either an anesthetizing, otherworldly vision that neglects suffering or an extreme ascetic embrace of suffering. Rather, hope seeks the transcendent good that acknowledges the profound depth of suffering while also maintaining a vision of happiness to come. Here, Augustine draws on hope to maintain a tension between temporal and eternal life, between the present reality of suffering and the future hope of happiness. We will also see a close connection between hope and its compatriots of faith and love, a connection Augustine utilizes to explore how hope transforms the moral and spiritual principles that guide our actions in the world.

    Autorytet nauczyciela-wychowawcy szansą na przezwyciężanie agresji i przemocy w szkole

    W artykule omówiono najważniejsze zagadnienia, które zawarte są w jego tytule. Składa się on z sześciu punktów. Na początku szczegółowo zostało omówione pojęcie autorytetu, a następnie jego rola i znaczenie w nauczaniu i wychowaniu. Punkt trzeci i czwarty ukazuje pojęcie oraz rodzaje agresji i przemocy a także przejawy zachowań agresywnych. Każdy nauczyciel, mając gruntownie opanowany przedmiot swej specjalności, musi kształcić się w tej dziedzinie, ale również w dziedzinach pokrewnych. Postawa intelektualna nauczyciela, powinna charakteryzować się umiarem, ostrożnością, rozwagą i powściągliwością w wydawaniu sądów. Kompetencje osobowościowe i zawodowe nauczyciela-wychowawcy, to kolejne zagadnienie przedstawione w artykule. Część końcowa artykułu poświęcona została relacjom pomiędzy Mistrzem i uczniem, które ułatwiają przezwyciężanie trudności wychowawczych.
