- ItemChrystianizacja i romanizacja elit w rzymskiej Edessie(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2020) Jędrzejewska, DariaIn the pre-Roman history of Edessa and Osrhoene, the role of the local elites, gathered around the royal court, was clearly visible. By this time, Edessean upper classes were strongly influenced with Iranian culture. In the process of incorporation of Osrhoene into Roman Empire, the elites of Edessa took over some Roman cultural models, and their representatives participated in the local administration already after the fall of the Abgarid dynasty in 242 BC. This article aims to trace in sources concerning the history of Edessa references to the local aristocracy. Apparently this group continued to play a role after the transformation of the kingdom into a province, but remained in the shadow of dynamically developing ascetic Syrian Christianity. The elites of Edessa are associated with the figure of Bar Daisan, whose teachings and sect called the Bardezanites survived at least until the fifth century; probably the same circles preserved and modelled the record of conversion of the King of Edessa (S. Brock's theory), which was generally accepted by the inhabitants of the city. Although the sources mention the elites of Edessa occasionally and reluctantly, the most important tradition associated with them - the legend of the conversion of the city - became the factor that made Edessa famous in the Roman world.
- ItemFilozoficzna apologia monofizytyzmu w Rozjemcy Jana Gramatyka(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2020) Mielnik, DawidThe main purpose of the paper is an attempt of presentation of philosophical argumentation used by ancient philosopher John Philoponus for justifying the condemned by Council of Chalcedon monophysical doctrine. The purpose realization was possible thanks to analysis of arguments used by Philoponus which arguments were presented in six chapters of his Arbiter. The paper was divided into three parts. In the first one the profile of Arbiter was presented. In the second one, which was longer in relation to volume, the philosopher’s systematic teaching was analyzed. In the last one the most important features of Philoponus’ argumentation were presented. On the basis of the analysis it could be claimed that John Philoponus used the terms “nature” and “substance” interchangeably. What’s more, he used different examples for showing the legitimacy of his reasoning and he also builds next arguments on the ground of beforehand conclusions.
- ItemGeneza „dwóch Testamentów” Pisma Świętego(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2020) Królikowski, JanuszIn the everyday Christian language as well as in theology the two parts of the Holy Bible are referred to as the Old and the New Testament. This terminology has its origins in the Bible, but it was gradually shaped on reflection in the times of the Early Church. It resulted from the process of crystallization of the identity of the Christian community, but also from the fact, that “new” Writings appeared and started to become a part of this identity. Therefore, a need arose for determining their relation to the Jewish Writings and for defining their character which was oriented towards fulfilling the old rules. The article is intended to explain how, in the times of the Early Church, the concept of the “two Testaments” was born.
