    Centrality of Religiosity Scale in Polish Research: A Curvilinear Mechanism that Explains the Categories of Centrality of Religiosity

    The centrality of religiosity scale (CRS) is a measure of the importance of religious constructs in personality. The Polish CRS has been applied in more than 40 published studies on the psychology of religion, with over 18,000 total participants. However, no comprehensive overview on the Polish CRS is available. This paper shows how using the CRS sheds light on different patterns in which religion integrates with other psychological variables. It consists of three parts: first, we introduce the Polish adaptation of the CRS; second, we present the review of the research using the Polish CRS; and finally, we provide research results that suggest a curvilinear mechanism for explaining the categories of the centrality of religiosity. Three measures were applied to the research: the CRS, emotions toward God scale, and content of prayer scale-revised. The results indicated that there is a curvilinear relationship between centrality of religiosity and emotions toward God, prayer types, and styles of request prayer (excluding passive request prayer). We determined the changepoints at which the relationship between the centrality of religiosity and the religious contents changes. This finding allowed us to provide empirical confirmation of Huber’s thesis (2003) that there is a different way of operating low, medium, and high scores in centrality, namely marginal, subordinated, and central religiosity. The study also broadens our understanding of each of these types of religiosity.

    Funkcja religijności w procesie radzenia sobie ze stresem. Koncepcja Kennetha I. Pargamenta

    Na polu badań psychologicznych obszary religii i stresu były powiązane ze sobą od dawna. Spośród koncepcji wyjaśniających funkcję religii w sytuacjach trudnych najbardziej popularna stała się w ostatnich latach teoria religijnego radzenia sobie (religious coping), rozwijana przez K. I. Pargamenta. Podejście to można scharakteryzować jako poznawcze, zorientowane na proces i pragmatyczne. W artykule przedstawiono aparat pojęciowy teorii, sposób, w jaki omawiana teoria wyjaśnia udział religii w poszczególnych etapach procesu radzenia sobie ze stresem, oraz mechanizmy, przez które ten udział si dokonuje. Przedstawiono również charakterystyk wyróżnionych przez Pargamenta religijnych metod radzenia sobie. Pomimo pewnych braków teoretycznych, model ten, dziki swej wieloaspektowości, dostarczył podstaw do szerokich i perspektywicznych programów badań. Wprowadził bowiem nowy punkt widzenia na związek religijności ze zdrowiem psychicznym, co stanowiło impuls do ożywienia i zdynamizowania badań w dziedzinie psychologii religii.

    Oblicza psychologii religii w Polsce

    Zjawisko religijności jest coraz częściej eksplorowane przez przedstawicieli różnych dyscyplin naukowych. Szczególnie dostrzegalne jest to w obszarze psychologii religii. Problematyka religijności człowieka zyskuje także coraz większe zainteresowanie wśród polskich badaczy. Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje główne trendy obrazujące rozwój zainteresowania zjawiskiem religijności na terenie psychologii. Uwzględniono tu zarówno kontekst światowy, jak i polski. Dodatkowo w skrócie zostały opisane artykuły składające się na niniejszy numer specjalny Roczników Psychologicznych, który został poświęcony zagadnieniom opisywanym przez polskich psychologów zainteresowanych zjawiskiem religijności człowieka.

    Odporność psychiczna: jej struktura i konstrukcja Skali Struktury Psychoimmunologicznej (SPS)

    The paper describes the theoretical background and the development of a psychometric tool designed to measure the structure of the psychoimmunological system. Theoretical terms related to the psychoimmunological system were discussed, integrated into the theoretical model and operationalized as a pilot version of the Scale of Psychoimmunological Structure (SPS). 375 adults participated in the research. The Principal Component Analysis revealed that the SPS has six components and the theoretical model was generally confi rmed. On the basis of the results of the study the experimental version of SPS was constructed and it’s preliminary psychometric characteristic was found as satisfactory.

    Struktura wewnętrzna polskiej adaptacji Skali Przekonań Postkrytycznych

    Hutsebaut i współpracownicy (1996, 2000; Fontaine i in., 2003) skonstruowali Skalę Przekonań Postkrytycznych (PCBS) do pomiaru dwóch wymiarów: Włączenie vs Wykluczenie transcendencji oraz Interpretacja literalna vs symboliczna, za pomocą których Wulff (1991) opisał podejścia do religii. W prezentowanym artykule przedstawiono analizy struktury wewnętrznej polskiej adaptacji PCBS. Rezultaty uzyskane w 10 próbach (N = 1775) sugerują, że wewnętrzna struktura polskiej wersji częściowo odzwierciedla założoną strukturę teoretyczną PCBS. Ponadto w artykule przedstawiono wyniki analizy głównych składowych oraz analizę rzetelności podskal PCBS w badanych grupach.

    The faces of religiosity in Poland

    The phenomenon of religiosity is increasingly often explored by representatives of various scientific disciplines. This is particularly noticeable in the field of the psychology of religion. The issues of human religiosity have been attracting an increasing amount of interest among Polish scholars. The present article presents the main trends illustrating the development of interest in the phenomenon of religiosity in the field of psychology. Both Polish and international contexts are considered. Additionally, the papers included in the special issue of Roczniki Psychologiczne (Annals of Psychology) are outlined. The special issue is devoted to the problems addressed by Polish psychologists interested in the phenomenon of human religiosity.

    The internal structure of the Polish adaptation of the Post-critical Belief Scale

    Hutsebaut and his colleagues (1996, 2000; Fontaine et al., 2003) constructed the Post-Critical Belief Scale (PCBS) in order to measure the two dimensions along which Wulff (1991) summarized the various possible approaches to religion: Exclusion vs. Inclusion of Transcendence and Literal vs. Symbolic Interpretation. In the present article, the internal structure of the Polish version of the scale is analyzed. The results obtained in ten Polish samples (N = 1775) suggest that the internal structure of the Polish version partially reflects the assumed theoretical structure of PCBS. Furthermore, the results of principal component analysis and reliability analysis are presented in the article.

    The Scale of Psycho‒Immunological Structure: assessing factorial invariance in Poland and Slovakia

    The paper starts with an attempt to develop a hypothetical cognitive structure of mental resiliency, called psycho-immunological system, which plays both a reactive (coping with difficult health situations) and proactive (health protection) role in relation to the human somato-immunological system. In order to answer the question: is the psycho-immunological system invariant in two neighboring cultures, Slovakia and Poland, the authors propose the psychometric operationalization of theoretical constructs of the psycho-immunological system in the form of The Scale of Psycho-immunological Structure (SPS) in both countries. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that four factors of the scale are equivalent in both samples on the structural level.
