Description de San Marco de Michel Butor : vade-mecum et livre d’artiste

Abstract

Description de San Marco peut être caractérisée comme un ‘livre d’artiste’ où Michel Butor s’engage à textualiser un édifice millénaire : la basilique Saint-Marc à Venise. En même temps Butor actualise ce complexe ensemble architectural et invite le lecteur à prendre part à la lecture, lecture de l’édifice aussi bien que de la description. La présente analyse regarde la deuxième partie de Description de San Marco, ‘Le Vestibule’, où Butor entame un dialogue scriptural avec les séries de mosaïques pourvues d’inscriptions du narthex qui toutes sont consacrées à des scènes pilotes de l’Ancien Testament.

Description de San Marco can be characterized as an ‘artist’s book’ in which Michel Butor is committed to textualize a thousand-year-old building: St Mark’s Basilica in Venice. Meanwhile Butor updates this complex architectural ensemble and invites the reader to take part in the reading of it as well as of the text. This study regards the second section of Description de San Marco, devoted to the vestibule, where Butor initiates a scriptural dialogue with the series of sub-titled mosaics in the narthex, all devoted to pilot scenes of the Old Testament.
