- ItemBarbarzyńcy w Vita Epifani Ennodiusza z Pawii(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Skibiński, TomaszThe article presents the image and the place of barbarians in the late-Roman society in the light of Vita Epifani by Ennodius (Magnus Felix Ennodius). The analysis of the work shows the world of the second half of the 5th century, co-created by Romans and the barbarians, in which the latter have their inalienable place. They are no longer guests and newcomers, but co-hosts and co-creators of the new community of the late antiquity. The image of individual barbarian groups is diverse: there are real partners of the Romans, concerned for the common good and supported by Roman advisors (eg Goths, Burgundians), but beside them are primitive, cruel and brutal Rugii, presented according to the stereotypical image of barbarism. All of them, however, are transformed under the influence of Epiphanius. Only occasionally, Ennodius indicates the difficulties in roman-barbaric integration resulting from difference of religion. Considering these qualities, Ennodius’ work appears as a call to the Roman clergy and aristocracy to work together with the new peoples present in the former Roman territories, and with their rulers.
- ItemCyprian u Tymoteusza.
(Augustyn, Ep. 78, 3). Męczeństwo jako rys duchowości Afryki Północnej(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Wysocki, MarcinCertainly one of the greatest phenomena of Christianity are the masses of martyrs who gave and still give their lives for Christ. In particular, martyrdom’s spirituality was characteristic of the first centuries of Christianity, and Roman Africa was undoubtedly the region that exceled in the number of martyrs, in the number of known acts of martyrdom and encouragements for martyrdom. In this article, based on existing ancient testimonies from the writings of Tertullian, Cyprian, the acts of the martyrs, Augustine, Arnobius and Lactantius, martyrdom is shown as one of the main features of North African spirituality.

- ItemJakimi językami mówili chrześcijanie w Afryce Prokonsularnej? Analiza odnośnych tekstów Tertuliana, św. Cypriana i św. Cypriana i św. Ci sami autorzy jednak używali w wielu wypadkach, zwłaszcza w katechezie i w kaznodziejstwie, łaciny prostszej, biorąc pod uwagę możliwości percepcyjne zwykłych wiernych. Najuboższą łaciną posługiwali się ci, którzy byli wychowani w najniższych warstwach, zwłaszcza społeczności fenickiej.

Pauli Monachi Thebaei of St. Jerome contained in the Manuscript Code Vaticanus Latinus 13008, kept in the Apostolic Vatican Library. In particular, are indicated and highlighted all variations of the Manuscript differing from the text of the critical edition of this work by St. Jerome (see B. - ItemMęczennicy Afryki Północnej w Martyrologium Rzymskim(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Nocoń, ArkadiuszAs is commonly known, Christianity reached the territories of North Africa relatively early, and its development was so dynamic that it surprises historians. In seeking an explanation of this phenomenon, many point to the line of one of its representatives, Tertullian: “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of Christians”. If that was the case, how many martyrs were there in the African Church? In which period and for what reason were they killed? Answers to these and other questions were searched for in the Roman Martyrology, a book that essentially is liturgical, but also contain some documentary elements. This study has led to a deepening of our knowledge of the martyrs of North Africa as it gave some at least general information about the time of the persecutions, the cities in which they took place, the numbers of the martyrs, their social status, and above all about their attitude in the face of death that in most cases was cruel. This information is precious, not only because martyrdom is a key factor for the understanding of Christian antiquity, but also because it is rarely mentioned in historical publications of our country.

- ItemRola i zadania prezbiterów we wspólnocie kościelnej w świetle pism Tertuliana(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Zalewski, DariuszTertullian did not bequeath any treaty directly about Church and organization of it. Well, he certainly did not regard it as something required. The aggregate of his works quite precise shows how Church in North Africa functioned in II and III century. In his works term presbyter it seems to be ultimately stated. The term determines the second level of beadle, subordinate authority of supervisor of community – pontiff. For that reason, presbyters did not arouse our author, who frequently lists them in relation with the superior. They participated in actions appropriate for pontiff such as education or gave baptism to somebody. Moreover, they confirm Christian marriage and they achieve intercessory function while public expiation sinners. However, they probably do not possess power to absolve worshippers. Tertullian especially point out their disciplinary function, they had to provide peace in the community although they create with pontiff and deaconry the hierarchy in Church.
- ItemRola ojców Kościoła w budowaniu społeczeństwa chrześcijańskiego w Afryce Prokonsularnej (I-V w.)(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Wygralak, PawełThe article discusses the process of the Christianization of North Africa. The study is based mainly on the works of the early Christian authors (Tertullian, Cyprian, Lactantius, Augustine) and the decrees of the African synods. From the extant sources it is difficult to describe the beginnings of Christianity in Africa. It seems to have arrived from Jerusalem and spread among the Jewish communities, over time expanding also among the indigenous inhabitants of Africa. The evangelization was not institutional in character, but the fruit of the life testimony of Christians, the attitude of martyrs, and the zealous work of the clergy. Care was taken first and foremost to conduct a thorough and in-depth catechesis connected with the reception of the sacrament of baptism and in preparation to the celebration of the most important liturgical feasts. Considerable role in the shaping of the Christian society was also played by the synodal activity of the Church. Regrettably, the Christian community was weakened by internal dissensions and the invasion of the Arian Vandals.

- ItemSymbolika eklezjalna Jerozolimy a polemika antydonatystyczna w Afryce Rzymskiej(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Paczkowski, Mieczysław CelestynThe present article analyses to which extent the African authors had got used of the image of Jerusalem in the period of their polemic with the Donatists. It is well known that one of the focal points of the Donatist controversy concerned ecclesiology. There is a great number of Church’s images occurring in the works of Christian authors, but it seems that a symbol of Jerusalem is however predominant. The city of God, an image of the Church, revealed itself as an earthly and celestial reality, including both the historical sphere and transcendence. Already in the process of forming ecclesiology in Nord Africa had a particular physiognomy with elements assimilated and altered by the Donatist sect. The reflections of Tyconius and Optatus of Milevi took on considerable significance and stood at the origin of catholic’s inspiration and argumentation. St. Augustine of Hippo placed the conflict with the Donatists not only on the practical and disciplinary context but above all on the doctrinal level. His ecclesiology proved to be coherent and compact. The bishop of Hippo found his basis on the biblical level and the traditional doctrine. In the anti-Donatist literature, it can be observed a certain predilection for a particular set of scriptural quotations used by various authors as an argument and as an illustration to support the thought concerning the universality of the Church. The topic of Jerusalem played here the crucial role.
- ItemSynody w Afryce Prokonsularnej III wieku jako przejaw kolegialności biskupów w świetle Kanonów synodalnych i Listów św. Cypriana z Kartaginy(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2019) Strękowski, StanisławW połowie III wieku biskupem Kartaginy w Afryce prokonsularnej został wybrany Thascius Caecilius Cyprianus, człowiek zamożny i wykształcony.
