- ItemAttitudes of Polish Young Adults towards the Roman Catholic Church: A Sociological and Pastoral Analysis of Empirical Research among Young Adults and Teachers(MDPI, 2022) Szymczak, Wioletta; Mąkosa, Paweł; Adamczyk, TomaszThe article provides a sociological and pastoral analysis of a representative empirical study conducted by means of an interview questionnaire among 1003 secondary school students in 2020 and 2021. The analysis was expanded to include data from parallel and similarly designed sociological studies carried out among teachers of religious education in order to obtain a broader view of the research problems and a better understanding of young adults by becoming familiar with the perceptions and opinions of teachers on the analyzed issues. The article reflects on and discusses the following issues: personal relationships between young adults and the Church along with their expectations towards the latter, factors considered to persuade young adults to develop their faith and be part of the Church, as well as Church activities and offers regarded by the surveyed subjects as particularly needed. These issues, presented from an interdisciplinary perspective, provide a deeper insight into people’s relations with the Church and allow for diagnosis of their needs and expectations. They also enable identification of the elements and aspects of the functioning of the religious institution, which, in a pluralistic society and the course of the ever-advancing secularization, requires a profound diagnosis, a thorough analysis and questions about the adequacy of forms and methods of evangelisation, as well as ways of reaching the target audience and the fulfillment of the fundamental religious mission.
- ItemInterdisciplinarity in Pastoral Theology. An Example of Socio-Theological Research(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2020) Szymczak, WiolettaThe purpose of the article is to analyze the idea of interdisciplinary research involving pastoral theology and sociology. This is one of the methodological proposals for research projects carried out under pastoral theology. Interdisciplinarity is understood as combining research methods for the cooperation of scientists from both disciplines in the process of planning, implementing and interpreting the results of empirical research. It is inspired by a problem identified in pastoral theology that requires exploration. The presentation consists of three parts. The first is devoted to the location of empirical research within pastoral theology. The second concerns the assumptions and significance of interdisciplinary research involving pastoral theologians and sociologists. In the final part, the areas of interdisciplinary cooperation among the research teams are pointed out. The potential of qualitative research as a space for cooperation among representatives of both sciences and as an important source of knowledge from the viewpoint of pastoral theology is shown. The comparative and synthetic method was used. The analysis shows that interdisciplinary research in the field of pastoral theology has great potential related to the acquisition and interpretation of multi-faceted empirical data and the designation of new research fields, which will significantly enrich the theological analysis process as well as the presentation and application of pastoral models.

- ItemPartycypacja społeczna młodzieży i jej wartościowanie. Przeprowadzane analizy statystyczne uwzględniają zmienne niezależne: płeć, miejsce zamieszkani i religijność, mierzoną stosunkiem do wiary. The aim of this article is firstly to analyse the levels of young people’s social participation, along with its selected determinants. Secondly, the aim is to answer the question: how do the research participants value voluntary initiatives and actions proposed at school? Research findings by representatives of social sciences concerning the situation of modern-day young people, their social participation, passive attitudes and on the issue of civic education constitute a reference point for the discussion. Subject to analysis are outcomes of representative sociological research conducted among adult young people attending secondary schools in the Archdiocese of Lublin in 2020 and 2021. The paper discusses the declared statements of the respondents on their participation in non-compulsory groups and initiatives organized at school, as well as in extra-curricular, pro-social organizations and actions. The statistical analyses included the following independent variables: sex, place of residence and religiosity measured by attitude towards faith, chi-square and Cramér’s V tests. The conclusions show among others that the respondents exhibit a low level of social participation. They highlight the potential to be found in their positive valuation of various forms of engagement as well as their willingness to take part in actions that aim at helping others in the future.
- ItemReligious or Spiritual? Empirical Manifestations of Contemporary Changes in Poles’ Self-Declarations and Media Representations(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2022) Szymczak, Wioletta; Szulich-Kałuża, JustynaThis paper comprises part of the current research on the phenomenon of new spirituality, conducted within the sociology of religion and social communication and media sciences. It aims to analyze selected manifestations of the new spirituality entering into the religious sphere of a religiously homogeneous society, based on the example of Poland. A complementary application of quantitative and qualitative methods was proposed. The subject of the analysis is the results of a representative survey in which Poles define themselves in terms of religiosity and spirituality, with examples of their search for content on a new spirituality through online resources using the assumptions of the theory of social representations. The above concept resulted in the bipartite structure of the main part of the article. It was preceded by a theoretical introduction synthetically presenting phenomena identified as key features of new spirituality and ended with a discussion of the results and conclusions. The analyses indicate that, in Polish society, the category of phenomena and processes classified as new spirituality is distinguishable but complex and diverse. In the subsequent stages of the analysis, their socio-demographic determinants were shown, and then the media representations of the new spirituality were identified, categorized, and put into typologies.
