    Du roman naturaliste au roman à thèse : entre révolution et évolution

    Cet article a pour objectif d’analyser la transition du roman naturaliste au roman à thèse et d’examiner par conséquent la transformation du genre romanesque à la fin du XIXe siècle. Nous proposons ainsi d’étudier dans un premier temps les différentes étapes de ce passage ou plutôt de cette « révolution » (combattre l’esprit décadent, admettre la prédominance de la religion, prôner une ouverture plus grande sur l’humanité, porter plus d’intérêt aux problèmes sociaux et moraux de l’époque). Aussi tentons-nous de répondre dans un deuxième temps à la question suivante : la transition du roman naturaliste au roman à thèse n’est-elle pas le signe d’une évolution du roman (émergence d’un discours idéologique et utopique, interpellation du lecteur, ton didactique), et ne reflète-t-elle pas par conséquent la transformation du genre romanesque au tournant du siècle ? This article analyses the transition from the naturalist to the thesis novel and, therefore, investigates the transformation of the novel at the end of the nineteenth century. We propose to begin by examining the different steps of that transition, or rather that ‘revolution’ (combating the decadent spirit, admitting the predominance of religion, advocating greater openness to humanity, taking a greater interest in the social and moral problems of the time). We will then attempt to answer the following question: is the transition from the naturalist novel to the thesis novel not a sign of the novel evolution (emergence of an ideological and utopian discourse, questioning of the reader, didactic tone), and does it not, consequently, reflect the transformation of the novel at the turn of the century?
