- ItemOn the Application of Norms within Driverless Cars(2019-12-04) Michael, MusielewiczIn this dissertation, I will take up the question of whether driverless cars can be bearers of norms and are capable of being normative agents who can follow both legal and ethical norms. To answer this question we must first under take three interrelated tasks. The first is to begin by examining what they are. The second task is to see if they are agents, and if so if they are also normative agents. Then finally we must undertake the task of seeing what sort of ethics is well suited for these normative agents. To resolve these tasks I will begin with a survey of what a driverless car is and where we are going with the technology, in addition to the current regulatory framework concerning these devices. The next chapter will address the issues of these devices agency and see if they are normative agents. The final chapter continues from the previous chapter and address how ethics is typically used in regards to driverless cars and finds shortcoming with other methods proposed. Finally I conclude by adopting a target centered virtue ethics, which I believe to be better suited for driverless cars.
