    Existentialism in the Works by Vita Sackville-West

    This study analyses themes related to the philosophy of existence in the works by Vita Sackville-West. The author created plenty of texts: she wrote novels, short stories, poems, plays – but nowadays she seems to be forgotten. The scholars appear to be more interested in her personal life than in her literary works. The aim of the analysis is to fill in this gap in the present state of research. This dissertation discusses ideas related to the Existentialist philosophy in the author's novels, short stories and plays. The discussion aims to demonstrate that the concepts associated with Existentialism progress in time in the author’s works published between 1919 and 1932. First, some ideas that contradict the philosophy at issue seem to be dominant, and then they are gradually replaced by the themes related to Existentialism. The study is complemented with the exploration of unpublished works by the author. Niniejsza rozprawa analizuje twórczość angielskiej autorki doby Modernizmu Vity Sackville-West. Dziś jest to autorka raczej zapomniana – o wiele więcej wspomina się o jej współczesnych, którzy wpisali się w ramy okresu Modernizmu i po dziś dzień zachwycają czytelników innowacjami literackimi. Zresztą badaczy interesują bardziej romanse i styl życia pisarki niż jej dorobek. A napisała ona wiele dzieł: powieści, utworów poetyckich, opowiadań, sztuk i innych (w tym sporo utworów non-fiction). Dysertacja bada wątki tożsame z filozofią Egzystencjalistyczną w twórczości Sackville-West opublikowanej w latach 1919-1932. W rozprawie podjęto próbę wykazania, że w dziełach autorki koncepcje nawiązujące do Egzystencjalizmu ewoluują: w najwcześniejszym stadium dostrzegalne są idee kontrastujące z tym nurtem; stopniowo są one wypierane przez motywy kojarzone z filozofią Egzystencjalistyczną, by ostatecznie dominować w twórczości Sackville-West. Rozważania zamyka analiza nieopublikowanych dzieł pisarki. W sumie dyskusji poddano dwadzieścia sześć utworów: powieści, opowiadań i sztuk.
