    Le Désarroi de Remy de Gourmont : un roman en réaction ?

    Le Désarroi, roman demeuré inédit du vivant de Remy de Gourmont, exprime une révolte propre à la fin du XIXe, teintée d’idéalisme, d’anarchie, d’individualisme nietzschéen et d’ésotérisme. Écrit entre 1894 et 1899, peu de temps après l’affaire soulevée par le « Joujou patriotisme », Le Désarroi est un roman écrit en réaction à plusieurs éléments. D’abord l’expression de la révolte, dans le sujet même, peut-être perçue telle l’expression d’une contestation par l’attentat anarchiste comme une justification de la violence. Puis, par ses caractéristiques éthiques, esthétiques et stylistiques, Le Désarroi apparaît tel un roman expérimental écrit en réaction au naturalisme de Zola et à l’écueil symboliste. La force du roman réside en ces différents niveaux de lecture qui lui confère une place à part dans l’œuvre de Gourmont et une place de choix dans l’étude de l’évolution du genre romanesque à cette période. Le Désarroi, Remy de Gourmont’s novel published only posthumously, expresses a revolt typical of the ‘fin de siècle’, permeated with anarchy, Nietzschean individualism and esotericism. Written in the years from 1894 to 1899, not long after the affair provoked by “Joujou patriotism”, the novel is a reaction to several elements. Firstly, the expression of revolt in the subject itself can be viewed as a protest by means of an anarchist attack and justification for violence. Further on, by its ethical, aesthetic and stylistic characteristics, Le Désarroi appears to be an experimental text written in reaction to Zola’s naturalism and symbolism. The different possible levels of reading the novel set it apart from other Gourmont’s works and confer on it a special place in the study of the evolution of the genre at the end of the nineteenth century.
