    Categorial heterogenity: Old English determiners

    This paper examines the syntactic properties of two structures illustrated in (1) and (2): 1) his þone readan gim // his the red gem // ‘his red gem’ / (coblick,HomU_18_[BlHom_1]:9.125.121), 2) þæs his cwides // that his saying // ‘that saying’ / (coblick,LS_17.1_[MartinMor[BlHom_17]]:215.79.2742). Example (1) features a possessive – determiner sequence, which is characterized by the obligatory occurrence of both an adjective and simple determiners of the paradigm se/seo/þæt (Mitchell 1985: §103-112). The reversed order (determiner – possessive) does not display such restrictions. In particular, the adjective is optional and compound determiners (þes/þeos/þis) are also licit in these sequences, as shown in example (2). The analysis proposed in this paper accounts for these facts by assuming that Old English determiners are not a homogeneous group because they combine both adjectival (specifier) and pronominal (head) properties.

    Celtic influence and genitive resumptives

    This paper deals with resumptive pronouns in the genitive case in relative clauses and the influence that might be exerted upon these structures by Celtic languages. It is claimed that some arguments put forward in favor of possible Celtic influence upon resumptives (Roma 2007) need re-examination and the Celtic hypothesis in resumption should be treated with reserve. Specifically, it will be shown that neither geographical, chronological nor syntactic factors point unambiguously to Celtic influence. Despite some apparent similarities in the relativization systems of Early English and Celtic such as the use of personal pronouns as resumptives we need more evidence to claim that Celtic affected the relative system in the history of English.

    Demonstrative or article? The case of ten in Polish

    The paper discusses the syntactic status of the Polish demonstrative pronoun ten ‘this’ in the light of grammaticalization theory. The discussion begins with establishing formal (morphosyntactic) as well as semantic criteria for discriminating between articles and demonstratives. Then it reviews arguments for the demonstrative status of ten put forward in the literature. The paper ends with providing evidence for the definite article status of ten. Although the primary function of ten is still that of a demonstrative pronoun, it reveals some traces of categorial change on the grammaticalization cline in spoken Polish.

    The structural location of Case Phrase (KP) in Old English

    Artykuł omawia strukturę frazy przypadka (KP) w języku staroangielskim w ujęciu generatywnym. Zamiast jednak analizy przypadka jako cechy, zgodnie z wczesnymi założeniami Programu Minimalistycznego Noama Chomsky’ego, autor podejmuje próbę analizy tego elementu jako samodzielnej projekcji funkcjonalnej (KP). Autor rozważa trzy możliwości: w pierwszym przypadku projekcja funkcjonalna KP umieszczona jest nad frazą określnika (DP); w drugim podejściu KP znajduje się pod frazą określnika; w trzecim wreszcie – fraza KP jest połączona w jedną całość z DP. Aplikacja danych z języka staroangielskiego pokazuje, że jedynie ostatnia możliwość jest w stanie wyjaśnić dane w zadowalający sposób. W związku z tym postulowanie frazy przypadka jako samodzielnej projekcji funkcjonalnej jest zbędne.

    Podręcznik Tutoring dla początkujących składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Rozdział 1 skupia się na teoretycznych aspektach tutoringu. Prezentuje on różnorodność definicji pojęcia tutoring, podkreślając jego ewolucję i niuanse znaczeniowe w różnych kontekstach akademickich. Ponadto analizowane są tu modele tutoringu, które stały się fundamentem dla wielu praktyk edukacyjnych stosowanych w uczelniach wyższych na całym świecie. Kolejne części opracowania (rozdziały 2 i 3) skierowane są ku praktycznym aspektom zastosowania metod tutoringowych. W rozdziale 2 omawiane są tematy i możliwe formy pracy ze studentem w ujęciu indywidualnym (1:1), w małych grupach, jak również w kontekście bardziej licznych (tzw. większych) grup studenckich. W rozdziale tym zwrócono też uwagę na wyzwania, możliwości i strategie skutecznego stosowania metod tutoringowych w różnych kontekstach dydaktycznych (między innymi poziomy nauczania, profile studentów, potrzeby tutorantów). Rozdział 3 ukazuje progresywną ścieżkę rozwoju tutora opartą na najlepszych praktykach w tej dziedzinie. Krok po kroku prowadzi on czytelnika przez etapy kształcenia i doskonalenia się w roli tutora, oferując konkretne narzędzia, metody i zasoby
