- ItemPraktyka wykonawcza Plain-chant w XVIII wieku.
- ItemSztuka „akompaniamentu” klawesynowego w XVIII-wiecznej Francji. This article concerns the performance practice of harpsichord-playing in 18th century France. The starting-point for reflection is anonymous manuscript ‘Traité d’accompagnement du clavecin et abrégé de composition’ (ca.1700) written in the times when the French harpsichordists and organists begin to open up to the style of keyboard playing developed in 17th century Italy. In this manuscript we can find the explanation of the system of abbreviation utilized to mark chordal relationships and the remarks on harpsichord ‘accompaniment’, ie the rules of playing a multi-voice harpsichord part based on the marks written above the bass line (the so-called ‘basse continuë’).
- ItemSztuka „akompaniamentu” organowego we Francji na przełomie XVII i XVIII wieku. The article focuses on the rules of organ playing presented by Jacques Boyvin in his Traité abregé de l’accompagnement pour l’orgue et pour le clavessin (Paris, 1705). Boyvin, born about 1653 in Paris, and died 1706, June 30th, spent most of his life in Rouen, the capital of Normandy. There, since 1676, he occupied the position of cathedral organist, earning fame of one of the most accomplished organists of the second half of the 17th century. His main musical output consists of two collections of organ music: Premier livre d’orgue contenant les huit tons à l’usage ordinaire de l’Eglise, published in Paris in 1690, and Second livre d’orgue contenant les huit tons à l’usage ordinaire de l’Eglise (Paris, 1700) and the above-mentioned treatise, which is considered to be one of the most important sources regarding keyboard playing practice at the turn of 18th century. In the first chapter Traité abrégé Boyvin discusses the main rules of music composition and he explains the symbols used in the transcription of basse continuë. In the second chapter he concentrates on various aspects of practical harmony of sounds. The third chapter includes a list of remarks on practical and performing aspects, which should be followed while playing the organ and the harpsichord. The last chapter (Des transpositions) deals with the important issue of scales transposition, which is often applicable in liturgical music. The important part of this article is the first in Polish literature of the subject, translation of the whole treatise, and the collection of organ exercises (preludes) originally published at the end of the treatise. The author of the article hopes to provide satisfactory amount of information both for organists and musicologists interested in the 18th century French music theory.
- ItemThe Art of Playing Keyboard Instruments in the Late 17th and Early 18th Centuries. Monsieur de Saint-Lambert and his Les principes du clavecin (1702)(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2015) Aleksandrowicz, MiłoszThis article concerns the execution of the ornaments—a very important question in the stylistic interpretation of the French harpsichord baroque music. The starting-point for reflection is treatise of the Monsieur de Saint-Lambert, a very enigmatic person, the author of Les principes du clavecin, centenant une explication exacte de tout ce qui concerne la tabulature et le clavier avec des remarques necessaires pour l’inteligence de plusieurs difficultées de la musique (The fundamentals of harpsichord playing, with explanations on musical notation and performance, together with explanatory remarks about different music issues), issued in 1702. He was highly valued as a harpsichord teacher and his treatises concerned the different aspects of playing keyboard instruments are the only preserved evidence of his musical and educational activities. It must be noticed that Saint-Lambert was the author of one of the oldest French treatises dedicated solely to the issues of harpsichord playing and his teaching method of mastering the instrument was at that time quite pioneering. The most important part of his treatise is the last nine chapters, focused on practical issues, where we can find the author’s advice on different aspects of existing keyboard music. The main problem in performing harpsichord music at Saint-Lambert’s time was the proper interpretation of music notation, which due to technical constraints (not yet perfect printing and editing of music works), was not able to reflect the whole variety of nuances of contemporary music style. So, the treatise Les principes du clavecin is a very helpful key to the understanding of the 18th century music. Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy wykonawstwa ozdobników – kwestii niezwykle istotnej przy stylowej interpretacji francuskiej muzyki klawiszowej okresu baroku.
- ItemThe Performance Practice of Organ-Playing in 17th Century France According to the Anonymous Manuscript Manière de toucher l’orgue (c.1670-1685)(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2020) Aleksandrowicz, MiłoszThis article concerns the performance practice of organ-playing in 17th century France. The starting point is the anonymous manuscript Manière de toucher l’orgue dans toute la propreté et la délicatesse qui est en usage aujourd’hui à Paris (Organ performance manners regarding the style and its nuances currently practised in Paris), written probably between 1670 and 1685. The greatest value of this manuscript is that it provides important information about the new trends in liturgical organ-playing introduced during the late 17th century in Paris. This article is a development of the ideas sketched by William Pruitt (1986). His analysis, however, was limited to factual aspects and an overall description of the source. This article, using the hermeneutic research method, takes a broader look at the practical issues that may be useful for music historians and for organists who want to deepen their historical knowledge about early French organ music. Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy praktyki wykonawczej francuskiej muzyki organowej XVII wieku. W niniejszym artykule, wykorzystującym metodę hermeneutyczno-muzyczną, zagadnienia wykonawcze omówione w Manière de toucher l’orgue zostały osadzone i zreinterpretowane w znacznie szerszym kontekście.
- ItemXVIII-wieczny, „nowy” system notacji monodii liturgicznej. Démotz de la Salle i jego Methode de plain-chant selon un nouveau système (1728)(Wydawnictwo Muzyczne Polihymnia, Instytut Muzykologii KUL, 2011) Aleksandrowicz, MiłoszDémotz de la Salle (†1741) was a French monk and music theorist. His name doesn’t appear in any modern music history handbook, perhaps because he was not a composer. We can suppose that he was interested in the monody only for liturgical and pastoral reasons. In 1728 he published „Methode de plain-chant selon un nouveau systeme”, a treatise which contains a description of a new liturgical monody notation. In the same year he published his second treatise, „Methode de musique selon un nouveau systheme”, which refers to the music in general context. The most interesting matter in his theoretical thought is a new conception of the liturgical monody notation, which had been approved by scholars of the Paris Academy of Sciences (Académie des Sciences) in 1726. There were no lines used in the traditional music notation. He introduced simple graphic signs which were inserted between each syllable of liturgical text. His new system was to be a more concise, simpler and more convenient to print, learn and practice.
