- Item„Pułapka Tukidydesa” 2.0 (komentarz socjologiczny w spolaryzowanym społeczeństwie)(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2024) Łęcki, KrzysztofThis article addresses the question of the extent to which the conflict of recent years in Poland, which in social discourse and journalism is referred to as the “Polish-Polish war” or the “cold civil war”, fulfils the model conditions that justify calling it a “civil war”. The description of the civil war in Korkyra was chosen as a model for this type of conflict. This non-obvious perspective was selected for two reasons. Firstly, it allows a similar conflict to be discussed sine ira et studio. Secondly, it also makes it possible to examine the cognitive status of the “engaged observer” in a polarised society, thus analysing the issues of reporting objectivity and reporting bias, or the much-discussed of late “symmetrism” (much attacked from various sides). This article attempts to test the validity of a certain analytical approach to understanding a highly polarised modernity. The particular frame of reference is the interpretation of historical cases taken as models. The choice of such a perspective is supported not only by the opportunity to show the sociologically relevant and enduring contours of the interpreted phenomenon. Its advantage also lies in the possibility of distancing oneself from the emotionally saturated discourse of current political disputes.
- ItemStyle Masks (Social Communication, Interpretation, Sociology of Literature)(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2023) Łęcki, KrzysztofThe article deals with the sociological aspects of the interpretation of specific texts. Their authors are “men of letters” (writers, publicists). The texts themselves (mainly personal document literature, but not only) do not aspire to the form of a novel or any other version of literary fiction; however, the authors use literary and, more broadly, rhetorical stylistic means with full awareness. The materials described in the article are treated as messages and “performances”. It is assumed that each act of communication (and thus also the text) initiated by the addresser is a performance in Goffman’s understanding of the term. The article starts with the interpretation proposed in Clifford Geertz’s essay, then it discusses the opportunities offered by Jan Szczepański’s constructive method in the field of qualitative sociology, as well as some – given with interpretative examples – aspects of Leo Strauss’ or Umberto Eco’s concept. Using the outlines of several historical but also more contemporary examples, illustrations, the article aims to sensitise sociological interpreters to the specificity of the analyzed and more contextually and rhetorically complex performance (including text or other form of communication). While the article primarily intends to support research interests in texts belonging to the literature of the “men of letters” personal document, it also has more general ambitions when it comes to the sociological interpretation of Goffman’s performances.
