Abstract
The author points out the central Christological and soteriological idea of the Fourth Gospel. In its light there is the faith in Jesus as the Messiah and the Son of God a principal condition of salvation and eternal life (John 20:30). Therefore the starting point of the article is the Christological thought of St John, which received in the Fourth Gospel a unique character, as it illustrates the titles of Jesus (among others: logos, expression „I am”, Son, Lord and God). The response of the people to the message of Jesus should be the attitude of faith, which likewise received a rich and multilateral form in the Fourth Gospel (cf. the use of the verb „believe, have faith”). In turn, the immediate fruit of the faith in Jesus is the gift of eternal life, the idea, which has been repeatedly delineated in the Gospel (John 3:16 36; 6:40 47; 20:31; cf. 1 John 5:13) In the last, fourth part the author seeks to shed light on the essence of the life, which begins in temporality and continues through death to eternity as knowing and dwelling with God in the Holy Trinity (John 14:2-3; 17:24).
