Abstract
K. Rahnera i J. Ratzingera, Offenbarung und Überlieferung. Hans Urs von Balthasar zum 60. Geburtstag, Freiburg 1965, s. 25-69, oraz później: Das Problem der Dogmengeschichte in der Sicht der katholischen Theologie, Köln 1966; Zur Frage nach der Geschichtlichkeit der Dogmen, w: Otto Semmelroth (red.), Martyria, Leiturgia, Diakonia. Festschrift für Hermann Volk zum 65. Geburtstag, Mainz 1968, s. 59–70.
Dogma is not a “dry” claim, a formula that even “frightens”, but an expression of the living faith of the Church, which is essentially unchanging. However, the expression of this faith in preaching and receiving (in dogmas) applies to a given historical epoch and its current spirit of understanding, hence a new interpretation of the same and unchangeable truth of faith in theological language is necessary. This interpretation is an expression of a living Tradition, while maintaining the principle of continuity and consistency of expression. The basis for reinterpretation is not only the basic relationship of Tradition to Revelation, to the Holy Scriptures, but also to the historical character of the faith and the historicity of dogmas. Research on the interpretation of dogma has led to yet another astounding conclusion that the so-called the updating interpretation is basically the case of Joseph Ratzinger, although he himself does not mention the name of the interpretation. It turns out that Ratzinger’s texts - talking about Tradition, the history of dogmas, or the relation of the dogma to the Bible and to history - arose much earlier than the mentioned document by ITC. Already in the mid-1960s, we find them in the work edited by K. Rahner and J. Ratzinger, Offenbarung und Überlieferung. Geburtstag, Mainz 1968, pp. 59-70. This means that Ratzinger has overtaken this document by several years. This in any way does not capture the momentous content of the document on the interpretation of dogma. The whole part of the document, devoted to the “updating interpretation” is reflected in Ratzinger’s independent research. Both the principles of this interpretation, the permanent value of dogmatic formulas, and the criteria for this interpretation (pp. 295-298), are content in the Ratzinger texts. On the other hand, the question arises whether the MKT document, prepared under the direction of Bishop W. Kasper, did not use Ratzinger’s texts. There is no trace of this in the document, but a peculiar canon of texts prepared by the MKT is the non-inclusion of contemporary authors, and the reference almost exclusively to ecclesial texts.
