Abstract
Celem artykułu jest opisanie symbolicznej (figuratywnej) funkcji i roli Natanaela w czwartej Ewangelii. W pierwszym punkcie autor omawia J 1,43-51 jako jednostkę literacką i teologiczną bogatą w elementy typowe dla literackiego języka i stylu ewangelisty. Następnie analizuje sukcesywnie wszelkie informacje na temat Natanaela, opierając się na zasadach wypracowanych przez analizę narracyjną. Wprawdzie brak w tekście charakterystyki Natanaela wyrażonej wprost przez ewangelistę, ale mamy opisane jego postawy, czyny i słowa (por. w. 49) oraz informacje podane przez innych: Filipa (w. 45-46) i głównie Jezusa (ww. 47-48. 50-51). Zdaniem autora artykułu, Natanael jest osobą reprezentującą jeden z ponadczasowych „typów" uczniów Jezusa, jak podobnie są nimi Piotr, Nikodem, Matka Jezusa i inni. Będąc prawdziwie Izraelitą i uczonym w Piśmie, Natanael jest prefiguracją i prawzorem Żydów zaproszonych do wiary w Jezusa jako Syna Bożego i Króla Izraela (Jan 1,49; por. Ps 2,7-8).
The aim of the article is to enlighten an emblematic (figurative) function of Nathanael in the Forth Gospel. As the first the author presents John 1,43-51 as a literary and theological unit with elements of Johannine language and style. Subsequently he analyses all data regarding the person of Nathanael reaching the rules developed by narrative analysis. There is no opinion on Nathanael expressed directly by the narrator (St. John), but there are behaviours, deeds, and words of Nathanael (cf. v. 49), and primarily expressions of other characters of the story: cf. Philip (vv. 45-46) and mainly Jesus (vv. 47-48. 50-51). According to the author, Nathanael is a person who depicts one of the “typical” kinds of Jesus’ disciples in the Forth Gospel, like Peter, Nicodemus, mother of Jesus, and many others. Nathanael is truly an Israelite and a scribe studying Scriptures who prefigurates Jews invited to believe that Jesus of Nazareth is really the Son of God and the King of Israel (John 1:49; cf. Ps 2:7-8).
