The priority of form in the metaphysics of the human person. A contemporary defense of aristotelian-thomistic hylomorphism
    (2024-03-20) Caruana, Christopher
This dissertation offers a critical examination of the metaphysical constitution of the human person, with a particular focus on the mind and body problem, adopting the relevant hylomorphism developed by the realist metaphysics of the Aristotelian-Thomistic tradition. The primary role of the formal cause is examined in order to highlight the philosophically advantageous results of a hylomorphic account as well as to show as far as is possible that this is really how facts are with the ontological constitution of the human person, hence the commitment to realist metaphysics. This research project, therefore, intends to defend the priority of form, understood in terms of both metaphysical and explanatory priority. In order for this examination to be a systematic one, contrasting accounts are also discussed, these being, primarily, dualistic theories as well as materialist approaches. A balance is struck between a historical and classical investigation into the way these theories accounting for the body and soul relationship were developed, on the one hand, and a more contemporary and scientifically informed approach to this widely discussed theme.

The Problem of the Human Person’ Subjectivity in the Anthropological Thought of Karol Wojtyła
    (2024-04-10) Lesomar, Antonius Alex
This dissertation presents a critical overview of a crucial problem in Karol Wojtyła’s anthropological thought, namely the problem of the human person’s subjectivity. The main objective of research on this problem is to achieve an adequate understanding of Wojtyła’s conception of subjectivity, which will eventually arrive at an adequate understanding of human being. To achieve this goal, there are three main issues that need to be investigated, dissected and presented in this dissertation, including: the manifestation of the subjectivity in the human experience, the principle or cause of human person’s subjectivity, and the significance of Wojtyła’s conception of subjectivity. The achievement of Wojtyła’s conception of subjectivity, through research and review of these main issues mentioned above, is supported and elaborated with the use of metaphysical explanation and phenomenological description method, and equipped with text analysis and historicity method. The metaphysical explanation method addresses the facts given in experience by finding the causes that justify the existence of these facts and their essential contents. These facts are actions of the human person given in experience. This method guarantees the discovery and explanation of the reasons for the facts of human actions. In the context of explaining the problem of subjectivity, it is about something that cannot be reduced, which is nothing but the principle of the subjectivity of the human person. The phenomenological method allows an interpretation and description of the lived experience of the subjectivity of the human person, namely the lived experience of a conscious personal subject and its manifestations in its activities. Meanwhile, through the method of text analysis, Wojtyła’s conception of subjectivity can be discovered, dissected and then reconstructed in this dissertation. And by using the historicity method, the main concepts of subjectivity in the history of philosophy can be extracted and presented in this dissertation. The results of the research presented in this dissertation affirm that Wojtyła understands subjectivity at the level of metaphysics and phenomenology. At the level of metaphysics, man, as a person, is suppositum or the subject of his existence and activities. Here, he appears as an objective autonomous being. At the level of phenomenology, the human person experiences himself as such and therefore he is the subject in the strictly experiential sense. He also experiences his actions as acts of which he himself is the agent. Thanks to consciousness and especially its reflexive function, man appears as a subjective autonomous being who has experience of himself as a subject, which makes his being fully subjective. At this experiential realm, subjectivity is manifested in the moments of reflection, decision and action. In these moments a person is given in experience as a “self” or “I.” In particular, through action, a person fully reveals himself as a subject and agent. The description of the manifestation of human subjectivity leads to the apprehension of a correct understanding of the principle of human subjectivity, namely the person. Regarding this principle and the adequate understanding of man as a person, Wojtyła adhere to the objective Aristotelian-Thomistic view about man. He accept Aristotle’s notion that human being is a rational animal. The Polish philosopher also follow Boethius’ definition of person, persona est individua substantia rationalis naturae, and made it the basis of his theory of the human person. He also adopt St. Thomas Aquinas’ claim that the person is an incommunicabilis subsistentia. However, these objective views are not enough in explaining the uniqueness and richness of the man as a person. Therefore, Wojtyła enriches and expands the objective view of Aristotelian-Thomistic traditions by asserting the lived experience or the subjective experience of man. The Polish thinker asserts that the man-person as suppositum uniquely reveals himself in the performing actions, and realizes and experiences himself as a subject and agent. And through the actions the person can be captured and understood as the subject. As such, the action is a proper dynamism belonging only to the human person, simultaneously is the proper place of the knowledge of the person. In turn, through the analysis of subjectivity leads us to the discovery and understanding of the man as a person with all of his wealth and complexity. It is this personalism that Wojtyła develops based on the metaphysical method supplemented by phenomenology, and his openness in contact with philosophical trends, science and especially theology. Besides that, Wojtyła’s personalist conception of subjectivity also displays significant consequences for anthropology, ethics, social life and culture. All of these exhibit the specificity of Wojtyła’s conception of subjectivity in his anthropological thought, which I present in this dissertation.

Adolescenci (N = 320) brali udział w kwestionariuszowym, dwuetapowym badaniu i wypełniali: w etapie I - Ankietę socjodemograficzną, Kwestionariusz Osobowości IPIP-BFM-50, Zrewidowaną Skalę Wewnętrznej Aktywności Dialogowej SWAD-R oraz Skalę Mówienia do Siebie STS, zaś w etapie II - Kwestionariusz Sposobów Kształtowania Tożsamości CIMQ oraz Skalę MHC-SF do pomiaru dobrostanu. Ustalono, że: (1) cechy osobowości są predyktorami sposobów kształtowania się tożsamości, a najistotniejszą rolę odgrywają intelekt i sumienność oraz stabilność emocjonalna; (2) sposoby kształtowania się tożsamości wykazują sinusoidalny kształt relacji z metacechami osobowości alfa i beta (3) oraz dobrostanem psychicznym i dwoma jego aspektami: emocjonalnym i psychologicznym; (4) dialogi wewnętrzne adolescentów pełnią funkcje rozwojowe, obronne lub nieadaptacyjne; (5) cechy osobowości są predyktorami funkcji dialogów wewnętrznych, z czego najważniejszą rolę odgrywają stabilność emocjonalna i intelekt; (6) dialogi wewnętrzne mediują relację osobowość - tożsamość zaś mówienie do siebie mediuje relację tożsamość – dobrostan. The project aimed to verify the relationship of personality - identity - well-being in a group of adolescents aged 13 to 18, and to expand the model with the phenomenon of intrapersonal communication, understood as internal dialogues and self-talk. Participants (N = 320) took part in a two- stage questionnaire study and completed: in stage I - Socio-demographic questionnaire, International Personality Item Pool-Big Five Markers-50, Internal Dialogical Activity Scale-Revised and The Self-Talk Scale, and in stage II - Circumplex Identity Modes Questionnaire and the MHC-SF Scale. It was established that: (1) personality traits are predictors of identity formation modes, of which intellect, conscientiousness and emotional stability play the most important role; (2) identity formation modes show a sinusoidal shape of the relationship with alpha and beta personality metatraits (3) and psychological well-being and two of its aspects: emotional and psychological; (4) internal dialogues of adolescents perform self-reflective, defensive and disruptive functions; (5) personality traits are predictors of internal dialogue functions, with emotional stability and intellect playing the most important role; (6) internal dialogues mediate the personality-identity relationship, and talking to oneself mediates the identity-well-being relationship.

Brak nadziei prowadzi natomiast do rozpaczy i utraty sensu życia. An essential characteristic of humanity is to have hope. Human life, although it takes place in the present, it is also oriented toward the future. Everyone expects something from the future, hopes for something, and trusts that his or her plans will come true. Hope enables us to look to the future without fear and gives us the strength to act and take responsibility for our lives. A lack of dearth of hope, on the other hand, leads to despair and a loss of meaning in life. The Christian hope guides man toward God, from whom he expects the good that is eternal life, and reveals to him how to properly live his life on earth. A Polish theologian who devoted a significant part of his life to studying the question of Christian hope was Fr Wacław Hryniewicz. His scholarly output represents a large and valuable contribution to the development of and interest in, the livable topic of the Christian hope. Accordingly, the main research question was formulated: Q: what is the credibility of the Christian hope in the opinion of Fr Hryniewicz? The answer to the question is to be found in the four chapters o f the dissertation. The first chapter presents that hope is a fundamental reality of human life. According to Fr Hryniewicz, the hope of reality is an essential component of every men’s life. Not only does it have a certain driving force in human life, but it also helps one to pass through difficult moments in life. It is shown that hope is also transcendent in nature. In the chapter, it is also pointed out that it is possible to adopt the very opposite attitude towards life, that is, the attitude of despair. Hopelessness is the opposite of hope, and an attitude that leads to a sense of meaninglessness and denial of the gift of life. To show the credibility of Christian hope, based on the scholarly work o f the Lublin theologian, it was also shown that it does not separate man from temporal life. The second chapter o f the study presents how the Lublin professor interprets the biblical sources of Christian hope. First, reference was made to texts from the Old Testament. It was shown that through the history o f Israel, the teaching of the prophets, and the vision of the promised Messiah, an image of lasting and unshakable hope, whose architect is God himself, becomes visible on the pages of the Old Testament. Central to the Good News proclaimed by Jesus Christ, was the idea of the Kingdom of God. Analyzing the parables o f Jesus as interpreted by Hryniewicz, it was shown that the preaching of the Master of Nazareth is a proclamation of hope, the prospect of eternal happiness in the Father's kingdom. The chapter also shows that the foundation of Christian hope is the truth that the mystery of Christ's Passover embraces all people. The third chapter discusses the problem of hope and its credibility in the face of major challenges present in human life. Drawing on Prof. Hryniewicz's theological thought, issues concerning human existence such as free will, the problem of evil and suffering, the experience of death, and the correlation between man and the material world are addressed. The fourth chapter presents, in the context of hope, the eschatological views of the Lublin theologian. A discussion of such issues as the resurrection and eternal life, the Parousia and God's judgment, the problem of hell, and the hypothesis of the hope of salvation for all are undertaken. In its essence, the Christian hope is eschatological in character, and it is oriented towards God's promised eternal life in His kingdom. This part of the work shows that Professor Hryniewicz's views critically evaluate the eschatology present in the history of theology and characterized by fear and anxiety of punishment and condemnation. According to the author, Christ in his preaching did not focus primarily on the fearful doctrine of damnation, but on the good news of salvation. The Saviour did not frighten people with hell but brought the hope of eternal life. Eschatology as seen by Hryniewicz is thus an eschatology of hope.

Pierwszy z nich poświęcony został podstawowym zagadnieniom z zakresu teorii i metodologii tworzenia korpusów ręcznie anotowanych, zaś przedmiotem analiz w drugim rozdziale części praktycznej jest nominalizacja w nagłówkach elektronicznej prasy polskiej i francuskiej. Część empiryczna pracy przedstawia m.in. dane dotyczące frekwencji poszczególnych typów nominalizacji w zebranych nagłówkach, a także dane dotyczące ilości argumentów, jakie niesie za sobą użycie w nagłówkach nominalizacji zamiast formy czasownikowej. Przeprowadzone analizy obejmują 600 przykładów pochodzących z polskich i francuskich portali internetowych zebranych w ciągu czterech następujących po sobie miesięcy. Rozważania zostały zakończone wnioskiem głównym opartym na zebranym materiale: nominalizacja jest podstawowym środkiem formalnym prowadzącym autorów nagłówków do ukrycia bądź niewyrażania niektórych informacji gramatycznych. fhe overriding goal of the doctoral thesis is to show the role of nominalization in the headlines of the Polish and French digital press. The work consists of two parts: theoretical and practical. I’he theoretical part is divided into four chapters, in which the subject of the language of the press, headlines, electronic press and its function as one of the mass media, as well as theoretical aspects of nominalization are discussed. The practical part of the dissertation consists of two chapters. The first of them was devoted to the basic issues in the field of theory and methodology of creating hand-annotated corpora, while the subject of analysis in the second chapter of the practical part is nominalization in the headlines of the Polish and French electronic press. The empirical part of the work presents e.g. data on the frequency of particular types of nominalization in the collected headlines, as well as data on the number of arguments that the use of nominalization instead of the verb form in the headlines entails. The analyzes carried out include 600 examples from Polish and French Internet portals collected over four consecutive months. The considerations were concluded with the main conclusion based on the collected material: nominalization is the basic formal means leading authors of headlines to hide or not express certain grammatical informations.
