- ItemBractwa religijne w epoce staropolskiej w świetle ich organizacji i struktury wewnętrznej(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Flaga, JerzyThe internal structure of the religious fraternities shows that it was, if not exemplary, certainly well thought out and carried out with full awareness. It reflects well on fraternities, even though they were very common organizations and had a large number of people with different social status as well as educational and intellectual levels, because they were open to all those willing to join them. Perhaps that is why, in addition to the devotional and religious reasons given by the Church, they were so commonplace. All of this undoubtedly affected the role that fraternities, or more broadly, religious associations played in the history of the Church, the entire societies and local communities of those times.

Cardinal Karol Wojtyła had a considerable impact on the development of the universal and local Church, strengthening the bond between the Churches of the Metropolis of Krakow. The pontificate of John Paul II gave a new direction of the papacy by opening the Church to ethical, moral, philosophical and social problems. Encyclicals, exhortations, addresses, pastoral letters and the whole pastoral and theological heritage of the Holy Father have been an incentive to undertake further research by academics and students of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Silesia in Katowice. The results of these studies are reflected in the pages of “Śląskie Studia Historyczno-Teologiczne” and the dissertations of the Faculty of Theology of the University of Silesia. The problems addressed by the Pope have inspired the local academic community to reflect on the papal teaching.
- ItemDwa nieznane średniowieczne dokumenty do dziejów lwowskiego kościoła Św. Ducha(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Trawka, RenataIn the W. Stefanyk Library of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Lviv, under the reference number: Fond 5, op. 1, spr. 2155, there is a 16th-century manuscript, which contains, among others, the copies of several documents of the 14th and 15th centuries. The documents were prepared on the initiative of Adam Mniszkowski, a provost of the Holy Spirit Hospital and a prebendary of St. Catherine’s Chapel at the Lviv Low Castle. Among them are two unpublished documents concerning the endowment of the Holy Spirit Church in Lviv. The first of them-produced by the Archbishop of Halicz Jakub Strepa in 1399- confirms that the nobleman Michał of Malechów gave the rector of the mentioned church an annual rent from the income of the inn in Malechów. The other document was prepared in 1405 by Jakub, a rector of the Holy Spirit Church in Lviv and a judicial vicar of Halicz. He gave Stanisław Żelko, a village leader assistant, the meadow in Sroki together with the forest and the oak tree area with the aim of making it arable land in exchange for the annual rent paid to each rector of the hospital church after the period of wolnizna (the period during which a settler was exempt from paying duties). An analysis of the form indicates that this latter document was also produced in the office of the Archbishop of Halicz. The list of the witnesses to the document includes representatives of the nobility of Lviv and Przemyśl and the townspeople of Lviv. In addition to the characteristics of the content of the both documents, the article also presents their critical editing.

- ItemFinansowanie akcji charytatywnej w diecezji katowickiej w czasie wielkiego kryzysu(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Hadrych, ZbigniewThe great economic crisis caused disastrous social consequences, which resulted in significant deterioration of the financial situation of the inhabitants in the Diocese of Katowice. The most important negative consequences of the economic crisis included unemployment rate at about 40%, vast areas of poverty and the threat of demoralization (alcoholism, vagrancy, prostitution, street children). The Catholic Church took some measures to reduce the negative effects of the crisis. It took care of financing some activities, obtaining the support from the faithful (offerings, special donations, contributions from the members of charitable organizations), local government and central institutions, and organizing various charity events (evenings, dances, stage plays). Particular emphasis should be given to dedication of the clergy and the faithful involved in the work of charities. Their contribution greatly surpassed the donations of other inhabitants of the Province of Silesia. Those of the faithful who were the most aware of the situation - the clergy and parishioners - rose to the challenge and assisted people who were in need. Thanks to their work and generosity, the Church could successfully organize large-scale charity events.

- ItemParafia i kościoły w Abramowicach w XVIII-XIX wieku(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Hamryszczak, Artur Paweł; Mącik, HubertThe parish in Abramowice was mentioned for the first time in 1398, when the heir of the village, Sieciech, gave about 50 ha of unsettled land to the newly built church dedicated to The Holy Trinity, the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. James. In the Middle Ages, the parish also included neighbouring villages: Dominów, Skrzynice, Śmiłów (present Ćmiłów) and Wilczopole. In addition, the town of Głusk, after its foundation in 1687, became a part of the parish of Abramowice. In the 19th century, the following villages, from the Lublin parish, were incorporated into the Abramowice parish: Dziesiąta, Żabia Wola as well as settlements created about half of the 19th century: Kalinówka, Kliny and Kaleń. In the 20th century new parishes were established in some of these places. At present the Abramowice parish, apart from the districts of Lublin-Abramowice and Głusk, includes: Dominów and Wólka Abramowicka, located in the district of Głusk. Analysing the canonical visitations of the 18th century, it was possible to determine that the parish church in Abramowice dedicated to St. James the Greater Apostle had been built in 1674, and consecrated by the Bishop of Krakow Mikołaj Oborski the following year. It is also mentioned that originally the church was dedicated only to St. James the Great, but later other dedications were added: the Transfiguration, the Assumption and St. Adalbert. The church which have survived until today was built between 1786 and 1790 on the initiative of Rev. Wincenty Jezierski. It was consecrated in 1796 by the bishop of Chełm and Lublin Wojciech Skarszewski. The church was expanded in 1906 in accordance with the design of the famous Warsaw architect Stefan Szyller. Among other buildings which have survived are the neo-gothic bell tower and morgue, dating back to the end of the 19th century, and the presbytery of the years 1727-1728, expanded at the end of the 18th century, with a monumental six-column portico.
- ItemPlaton i Arystoteles – bibliofile(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Warda, ElwiraThere is a wealth of information about the existence of libraries in antiquity. Historical sources indicate that already in the 6th century BC two Greek tyrants: Peisistratos of Athens and Polycrates of Samos had small collections. There had to be favourable conditions which allowed for establishing libraries. At the turn of the 4th century BC, sophists came to Athens and prepared citizens for public life. Then a new political structure was formed-democracy, which required education and knowledge from Athenians. There was the increased demand for such a model of education that would shape a human-citizen. At that time in Athens, numerous philosophical and rhetorical schools were founded. The creation of book collections was influenced by various factors. One of the book lovers was Plato, who founded his own school of philosophy, the Academy in Athens around 387 BC. We know that Plato collected and systematically enlarged his book collection, but it seems that his library was not too extensive. Aristotle of Stagira, the creator of the Athenian philosophical school, is considered to have been the first book collector. He held his collection in Lyceum, which was acquired by him around 335 BC.
