- ItemAristotle's Syllogistic as a Deductive System(MDPI, 2020-05-19) Kulicki, PiotrAristotle's syllogistic is the first ever deductive system. After centuries, Aristotle's ideas are still interesting for logicians who develop Aristotle's work and draw inspiration from his results and even more from his methods. In the paper we discuss the essential elements of the Aristotelian system of syllogistic and Łukasiewicz's reconstruction of it based on the tools of modern formal logic. We pay special attention to the notion of completeness of a deductive system as discussed by both authors. We describe in detail how completeness can be defined and proved with the use of an axiomatic refutation system. Finally, we apply this methodology to different axiomatizations of syllogistic presented by Łukasiewicz, Lemmon and Shepherdson.
- ItemBył dla nas darem(Instytut Jana Pawła II KUL, 2007) Ferenc, EdwardEdward Ferenc przedstawia esej, w którym opisuje swoją wieloletnią przyjaźń z Wojciechem Chudym, a w szczególności okres lat 70. - ItemDendroflora of roadside sacral objects in the Trzydnik Duży commune (Lublin voivodeship)(Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Warmińsko-Mazurskiego, 2017) Kulesza, Piotr; Lubiarz, Magdalena; Żak-Kulesza, MałgorzataAmong numerous elements of the Polish landscape, especially noteworthy are the roadside sacral objects. They are a testimony to national and local identity, and express centuries-old religious values. What is more, roadside crosses and shrines, surrounded by trees and shrubs, accentuate the space with exceptional decorative and cultural value. The presence of vegetation enriches the compositional value of these objects, complements their spatial structure, and highlights the aesthetic value. This paper presents the results of a study of regarding roadside sacral objects, carried out in the Trzydnik Duży Commune, Lublin Voivodeship. The study was performed as an inventory, enabling us to determine the species composition, health condition, and age of the dendroflora accompanying the roadside sacral objects. Within the studied area, 73 roadside sacral objects were inventoried. It was found that 53 of them were surrounded by trees and shrubs that represent 42 species. The most common include limes, lilacs, and white cedars. Health condition of the dendroflora is varied, however 78 % of the examined trees and shrubs are of very good or good health condition.
- ItemDiversity of macrophytes in riverine aquatic habitats: comparing active river channel and its cut-offs(2014) Kubiak, Adam Paweł; Krawczyk, RafałThe study area was a small lowland river valley (the Leg river) located in the south-east of Poland. The object of investigation was the macrophytes of 10 river lakes with corresponding active river channel stretches of the same length as the cut-offs. The aim was to check the difference in species diversity between cut-off and active river channels. The second aim was to test the following hypothesis: vegetation of river lake has been shaped under the influence of contiguous river stretch which has left a measurable mark in species abundance and composition. To test this, we checked whether a cut-off channel's flora is more similar to flora of the contiguous river stretch, than to flora of a farther river stretch. During the course of the study it was found that the average species richness was approximately two times higher in the cut-off channels than in the river stretches. The number of the species exclusive for the river lakes was nine times higher in comparison with the river's exclusives (not found in the cut-offs). The Shannon diversity index definitely spoke in favor of the river lakes. These results clearly show the significance of river lakes in maintaining biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems in a small river valley. We did not confirm our hypothesis concerning floristic relation between an active channel and its cut-offs. The floristic similarity between a given cut-off channel and the contiguous active river channel stretch is not stronger than the similarity between this lake and more distant river stretches. The cause of such a state of affairs may be high natural dynamics of investigated habitats and anthropogenic transformation of the river valley.
- ItemEkolodzy a ekologiści. The aim of this dissertation is to show the important difference between environmentalists as lovers and guardians of nature and ecologists or ecoterrorists as ideologues who destroy nature. Environmentalists seek, know, and love God as the Creator of the cosmos, while ecologists or ecoterrorists succumb to the illusions of various deities and ultimately to the stupidity of anti-godliness, which cuts off their reflection on man and nature from the most important transcendent reason, which is the Personal Creator of the universe. The same God, as the Creator, repays righteous, good, and pious man for his faithfulness and service to Him and His Divine works in the form of a visible creature, and punishes the unrighteous, evil, or unjust man for his erroneous and hypocritical approach to His Divine works. Environmentalists respect, support and develop man as the visible ruler of the world, to whom the eternal God has entrusted the universe and handed over power over it, while ecologists and ecoterrorists delete man as someone superior to animals, plants and other creatures. In this context of ideological struggle, it is necessary to return to the realistic Christian concept of man as a person and the universe as an extraordinary ontic order and to metaphysical-Christian ethics, which is a good antidote to the contemporary ecological crisis, which even leaves the mark of ecorevolutionaries on some groups. Environmentalists care about marriage and the family as the basis of “ecology” in the social teaching of the Catholic Church of Christ, and in contrast, ecologists and ecorevolutionaries attack man as an individual and destroy marriage and families as the foundations of a truly “human ecology” (John Paul II). Environmentalists care about nature because they represent the ethos of God’s order, and ecologists and ecoterrorists exploit and destroy it in various other ways because they have rejected God and thus despised man, to whom this nature is supposed to be helpful on the way to moral perfection. Environmentalists understand that animals also participate in the propitiatory sacrifice because they are also moving speciesily or individually toward the Kingdom of Heaven, that is, toward redemption, while ecologists and ecoterrorists reject the saving dimension of our cosmic existence, since they have previously rejected the gift of God’s salvation. Environmentalists do take animals and plants seriously, but they do not accept them as partners, unlike ecologists and ecoterrorists, to whom animals replace other people as neighbours. Environmentalists defend themselves and other people against the negative influence of animals on the basis of natural law, i.e. catching or removing dangerous animals, and ecologists and ecoterrorists call hunters “murderers” only because they perform such an important mission of safety in the natural world. Man has real and legal possibilities of subjugating the animal and plant world to serve him well, but this truth is questioned by ecoterrorists who dethrone the human person in their atheistic and neo-materialistic ideology of ecologism or ecoterrorism from being the visible king of the world to an entity-object subordinate to this objectively objective world. Environmentalists rightly demand state interference in the matter of protection of the broadly understood human environment and nature, while ecologists and ecoterrorists deny the sovereign subjectivity of the state in this respect and commit various iniquities, e.g. report on the Polish State to the European Union. Environmentalists are for the Kingdom of God and the eternal happiness of the saved, and ecologists and ecoterrorists work for the kingdom of Satan and the final condemnation of mankind fallen into the tragic impiety and iniquity of God and the world as the work of God’s creation.
- ItemFakt kulturowy i problem kryteriów jego oceny(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Kiereś, HenrykArtykuł podejmuje problem oceny faktów kulturowych.
- ItemKarol Wojtyła’s Concept of Personal Transcendence(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2022) Gudaniec, ArkadiuszThe article presents the understanding of the transcendence of the person in Wojtyła’s philosophy. The text discusses in turn: the role of the experience of the person; the concept of transcendence in relation to other concepts used by Wojtyła; the reference to the truth as the basis of personal transcendence; the integration of the person; the transcendence in the personal existence. The analyses conducted in the article show that transcendence of the person in the proper sense reveals the spiritual dimension of his existence as being superior to the material dimension. The presented text draws attention to the richness of threads showing the transcendence of the person in action on the basis of an analysis of lived experience. This approach not only illuminates or presents from another side the traditional concept of transcendence, based on the essential distinction between person and nature, but also adds new and revealing aspects to it. The person as an autonomous subjectivity not only freely determines himself/herself, but moreover transcends humanity as a general human nature – in virtue of an individual, unique personal existence. As a crowning achievement of the concept of the transcendence of the person, the metaphysical aspect of anthropology, which is strongly present in Wojtyła’s thought, is proposed here, which is somewhat new in the treatment of the topic of transcendence. According to this approach, transcendence experienced in action reveals its deeper level: transcendence in existence, which reveals the deepest foundation of being a person.
Wydobywane w toku analiz podobieństwa i analogie dotyczą przede wszystkim kwestii etycznych: problemu relacji człowieka do Boga, ludzkiego cierpienia oraz kwestii zła.
- ItemMetoda waloryzacji przydrożnych obiektów sakralnych(Polskie Towarzystwo Geograficzne, 2019) Kulesza, Piotr; Lubiarz, Magdalena; Żak-Kulesza, MałgorzataPrzydrożne obiekty sakralne stanowią ważny element polskiego krajobrazu kulturowego świadcząc o jego dziedzictwie i tożsamości. Autorzy zaproponowali wieloaspektową metodę oceny przydrożnych obiektów sakralnych w trzech ujęciach: krajobrazowym (ocena wizualno-przestrzenna), kulturowym (ocena unikalności) i przyrodniczym (ocena roślinności towarzyszącej).
- ItemModel duszy wieloczęściowej jako starożytny horyzont pytania o ludzką wolę w świetle Etyki nikomachejskiej 1111b i Politei 437B – 440D(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2021) Pasterczyk, PiotrAnaliza pojęcia postanowienia (προαίρεσις) i rozumnego pożądania (βούλησις) w trzeciej księdze Etyki Nikomachejskiej 1111B prowadzi Arystotelesa do dyskusji problemu słabości woli (ἀκρασία) w kontekście stosunku między rozumem, pożądliwością i gniewem.
- ItemMyślenie utopijne w nauce, o nauce i dzięki nauce.
- ItemNew Personalistic Philosophy Based on Hans Eduard Hengstenberg’s Interpretation of Max Scheler's System(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2020) Pasterczyk, PiotrThe article discusses the possibility of a new personalistic anthropology rooted in philosophia perennis and modern phenomenology, based on the thoughts of German anthropologist Hans Eduard Hengstenberg. Unlike Wojtyła and Stein, who did not create a new synthesis based on Husserl’s or Scheler’s phenomenology and the metaphysics of Thomas Aquinas, Hengstenberg was able to create an original concept of the human person involving metaphysical and phenomenological inspirations. It is personalism, based on the phenomenological theory of a spiritual act (Scheler) and the metaphysical theory of constitution (Plato, St. Augustine). According to Hengstenberg, the possibility of a new personalistic philosophy starts with a phenomenological analysis of three basic attitudes of human behavior: consensual to the object of cognition and emotion, contrary to the object of cognition and emotion, and utilitarian. The metaphysical heart of Hengstenberg’s personalism forms the theory of the metaphysical constitution of the spirit, body and personalistic principle.
- ItemNeyman-Pearson Hypothesis Testing, Epistemic Reliability and Pragmatic Value-Laden Asymmetric Error Risks(Springer, 2021-03-18) Kubiak, Adam Paweł; Kawalec, Paweł; Kiersztyn, AdamWe show that if among the tested hypotheses the number of true hypotheses is not equal to the number of false hypotheses, then Neyman-Pearson theory of testing hypotheses does not warrant minimal epistemic reliability (the feature of driving to true conclusions more often than to false ones). We also argue that N-P does not protect from the possible negative effects of the pragmatic value-laden unequal setting of error probabilities on N-P’s epistemic reliability. Most importantly, we argue that in the case of a negative impact no methodological adjustment is available to neutralize it, so in such cases the discussed pragmatic-value-ladenness of N-P inevitably compromises the goal of attaining truth.
- ItemProtection of Roadside Shrines and Crosses in Poland Against The Background of Historical Events and in Light of Established Legal Acts(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Żak-Kulesza, MałgorzataRoadside crosses and shrines are a characteristic element of the Polish landscape. Small sacred objects are intertwined with history and the cultural context of Polish countryside and cities, arising from the need of faith, and have manifested piety for generations. Many crosses and shrines were erected as mementos of important national events, uprisings, war skirmishes, independence spurts that took place in the 19th and in the first half of the 20th centuries, commemorating national anniversaries, for instance 1918, anniversaries of Christianization of Poland, jubilees of historic events. They were also built upon old mass graves of victims of bygone epidemics. In the context of historic events, objects of small sacral architecture were met with harassment and repressions. Therefore, after regaining independence legal initiatives were undertaken by the state and the Church to save these objects. Unfortunately, not always did this type of object receive sufficient legal protection or proper appraisal. In documents they are present in the background. That is why ethnographic studies are often the only way to save their memory, and preserve the image of old crosses, statues, and shrines.
- ItemScientific essentialism in the light of classification practice in biology – a case study of phytosociology.(Komitet Naukoznawstwa PAN, 2012) Kubiak, Adam Paweł; Wodzisz, Rafał R.In our paper we investigate the difficulty that arises when one tries to reconsiliate essentialist’s thinking with classification practice in the biological sciences. The article outlines some varieties of essentialism with particular attention to the version defended by Brian Ellis. We underline the basic difference: Ellis thinks that essentialism is not a viable position in biology due to its incompatibility with biological typology and other essentialists think that these two elements can be reconciled. However, both parties have in common metaphysical starting point and they lack explicit track of methodological procedures. Methodological inquiry involves less demanding assumptions than metaphysical, and therefore it is justified to analyse abovementioned discrepancy between Ellis and other essentialist in this context. We do it by bottom-up investigation which focuses on the practice of taxonomists in the particular field of biology. A case study helps us to discover four characteristics of biological typology practice: impossibility of algorithmization, relativity, subjectivity and conventionality. These features prove non-realistic and therefore anti-essentialistic character of biological classification. We conclude by saying that any essentialism related to the notion of biological kind cannot be regarded as justified by scientific enterprise of creating typologies.
- ItemSmall Roadside Sacral Structures in the Borzechów Commune (Lublin Region) and Their Dendroflora(Vydavateľstva Slovenskej poľnohospodárskej univerzity v Nitre, 2019) Lubiarz, Magdalena; Kulesza, Piotr; Żak-Kulesza, MałgorzataTrees and shrubs significantly increase the visual value of roadside crosses and shrines. The paper presents results of the inventory of small roadside sacral structures in Borzechów Commune (Central-Eastern Poland). The species composition and the age status of dendroflora surrounding small roadside sacral structures were examined. We have inventoried 94 small roadside sacral structures in Borzechów Commune. Only 68 of them were surrounded by trees and shrubs that represent 39 species. The most common deciduous species are small leaved lime (Tilia cordata Mill.) and common lilac (Syringa vulgaris L.), but the most common coniferous species is northern white-cedar (Thuja occidentalis L.). In the research area, the most common small roadside sacral structures are crosses. Shrines and statues of saints are very rare.
- ItemThe Body-Organism Difference as a Bridge between Particular Sciences and Philosophy in Understanding Human Person(Towarzystwo Naukowe KUL, Katolicki Uniwersytet Lubelski Jana Pawła II, 2022) Pańpuch, ZbigniewThe article copes with a plurality of sciences in general and focuses in the human-related sciences, which present different cognitive results. There is difficult to co-ordinate them because of the difference in methods, aims and formal objects of sciences, whereas the material object of various sciences - the real man exists as the only subject, with a definite and clearly determined substance. In a consequence, they produce different concepts of man. Is it possible to co-ordinate or to reconcile these various information about human being, especially these from particular sciences with the philosophical anthropology? A general understanding of the biological organism is of this kind that it is an object of science, but the notion of organism has been present in philosophy quite a long time—from the ancient times. Thus, an outline of the problem appears, namely the distinction between the organism, as an object of possible experience (fundamentally internal, but also external) and the body in the metaphysical sense, as an sub-ontic element of the human being. From the metaphysical point of view it seems (and that is my proposition or may be only a point mentioned anywhere by some authors, which I would like especially stress), that this whole—consisting of its organic parts, all unified in systemic reciprocal dependencies and various relations—is only accidental to human substance. This human substance—is a person. This specific “set of accidentals” constituting the human organism is subordinated (subjected) to the substance and exists in it and by it. Such an understanding of the organism and more precisely described distinction between it and the body can determine the field of interest of philosophy and other sciences, and simultaneously create a bridge between them. Human organism could be a good object of various research in the field of particular sciences. But the scientists should not forget about metaphysic and existential background of the human organism. From the other hand, the philosophers looking for the necessary causes of the human being have to take in consideration this necessary and specific set of accidentals (a human organism) and the particular knowledge of it provided by the scientists.
- ItemThe epistemic consequences of pragmatic value-laden scientific inference(Springer, 2021-05-18) Kubiak, Adam Paweł; Kawalec, PawełIn this work, we explore the epistemic import of the value-ladenness of Neyman-Pearson’s Theory of Testing Hypotheses (N-P) by reconstructing and extending Daniel Steel’s argument for the legitimate influence of pragmatic values on scientific inference. We focus on how to properly understand N-P’s pragmatic value-ladenness and the epistemic reliability of N-P. We develop an account of the twofold influence of pragmatic values on N-P’s epistemic reliability and replicability. We refer to these two distinguished aspects as “direct” and “indirect”. We discuss the replicability of experiments in terms of the indirect aspect and the replicability of outcomes in terms of the direct aspect. We argue that the influence of pragmatic values is beneficial to N-P’s epistemic reliability and replicability indirectly. We show that while the direct influence of pragmatic values can be beneficial, its negative effects on reliability and replicability are also unavoidable in some cases, with the direct and indirect aspects possibly being incongruent.
