- ItemAntoni Gąsiorowski – drukarz i wydawca z Johannisburga w Prusach Wschodnich(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2018) Warda, ElwiraW XIX wieku w Europie nastąpił gwałtowny rozwój piśmiennictwa. Oficyna Gąsiorowskiego działała w Johannisburgu do roku 1866. In the 19th century, writing underwent a rapid development. Books and magazines were widely available, not only among high society but also among the people who were less wealthy. New printing houses were established, also in Prussia, such as Walenty Stefański’s printing house in Poznań and Ernst Lambeck’s printing house in Toruń. Antoni Gąsiorowski learnt the art of printing and making woodcuts in the above-mentioned places. He set up his own printing house in Brodnica in 1847, but he transferred it to Masuria to Szczytno (Ortelsburg) in 1848, and a year later to Pisz (Johannisburg). In Szczytno he started printing the bilingual weekly "Kurek Mazurski – Der Masurische Hahn", which he continued to publish in Johannisburg. Gąsiorowski’s printing house was one of the most active printing houses in East Prussia, in which a number of magazines were published. However, most of them were discontinued after releasing the first issue, for instance, "Ewangelicki Tygodnik Gminny" or "Gospodarz Mazurski". Apart from weeklies, Antoni Gąsiorowski published Polish and German books, particularly religious ones, course books and calendars. In the 1860s, his printing press also released the texts written in Cyrillic intended for the Old Believers. Gąsiorowski’s printing house operated in Johannisburg until 1866. Nevertheless, from 1862 onwards, most publications – including the calendar – were taken over by the library and printing house of Ernst Lambeck in Toruń. The last Polish print published by Antoni Gąsiorowski was the book by B. Schmolke The Gold Jewel Dedicated to God Intended for People Worshipping God the Father and the Holy Spirit. It was released in 1865.
- ItemBiblioteki Wydziału Prawa i Nauk Społeczno-Ekonomicznych KUL w okresie II Rzeczpospolitej(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Nowakowska, MonikaDuring the interwar period at the Faculty of Law and Social-Economic Sciences of the Catholic University of Lublin, there were three main sectional libraries: legal, economic and social. In these libraries there were book collections, also referred to as libraries, assigned to a particular seminar. They were treated as research aid for employees and students. Initially, they were supervised by professors, who decided on the shape of the collection as well as the selection of library staff. Over time, there appeared a position of librarian who managed the collections of all the seminary libraries. In the 1930s librarians were assigned to each section separately; and they were responsible, among others, for cataloguing books and periodicals, making the collection available, providing research information, repairing damaged books, doing bookkeeping and arranging duty hours for scholarship holders. Seminar book collections increased as new books were bought and donated. The most important donations were books offered by the Main Library of the University of Lublin and Professor A. Szymański, a lecturer from the Faculty of Law and Social-Economic Sciences.
- ItemBractwa szkaplerzne – duchowe wspólnoty wiernych(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2016) Warda, ElwiraScapular brotherhoods are religious associations, whose members are obliged to wear a “small” scapular of a specific style and colour, expressing the relationship with the spirituality of the religious order, with which the brotherhood is linked. The origins of scapular brotherhoods date back to the 13th century, and the first ones were established in Florence, Bologna, Venice and other Italian towns. Scapular brotherhoods include: the Brotherhood of the Holy Trinity, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Sorrows, the Brotherhood of the Immaculate Conception, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Good Counsel, the Brotherhood of St. Cross and Bitter Passion of the Lord Jesus, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Health of the Sick, the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Charity, the Brotherhood of the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Brotherhood of St. Benedict and the Brotherhood of St. Michael the Archangel.

- ItemDzieje biblioteki Arystotelesa(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2011) Warda, ElwiraReading in Hellas developed quite slowly in the first period of the book development. However, more and more people read and possessed books. History reveals that ancient Greeks possessed small book collections. One of them was Aristotle of Stagira who is considered to be the first real book collector. His library held 143 works in 400 books. Before his death, he bequeathed his whole book collection to Teofrast of Eresos. In the course of time the library “changed hands”. It even became the part of Sulla’s war loot and hence it was in Rome. The library in Alexandria also possessed a substantial part of Aristotle’s books. After the collapse of Greece, Aristotle’s writings were kept in Syria. In the 4th century in Mesopotamia and then Aristotle’s writings along with other Greek philosophers were read in Arabia. The expansion of his philosophy to the West was possible due to the expansion of the Mahomet’s followers to the Pyrenees Peninsula. Thanks to the Arab philosophers, Latin Europe became acquainted with Aristotle’s philosophical legacy. At the end of the 19th century Aristotle was the talk of the world of science due to the new archeological discoveries. Dry sands of the Egyptian desert preserved papyruses with the fragments of different ancient texts. And thus Aristotle’s “The Constitution of the Athenians” was discovered, the text whose title had been only known before this archeological find.
- ItemGromadkarstwo – ruch religijno-społeczny w Prusach Wschodnich(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Warda, ElwiraIn East Prussia, the revival movement (Erweckungsbewegung) was formed by the eighteenth-century pietist school of the University of Königsberg. The development of the pietist movement in Prussia was influenced by the Brethren’s Congregation from Herrnhut (the Unity of the Brethren) and so-called the Brethren from Salzburg. The movement of the Brethren from Salzburg gave a direct impetus to the creation of the movement called Gromadkarstwo. In the 19th century, this movement was formed as an opposition to the official Church, and its members also participated in their own congregations led by lay people. There were various reasons for the development of Gromadkarstwo. By the middle of the 19th century, Gromadkarstwo in East Prussia had been purely folk in character, and its members did not leave virtually any documents. Peasants became nomadic preachers, spreading the gospel from village to village. It was only after 1885 that the mass movement became organized and institutionalized. In the Lutheran Church in East Prussia, it survived until the Second World War.

- ItemIntroligatornia w Bibliotece Uniwersyteckiej Katolickiego Uniwersytetu Lubelskiego Jana Pawła II w latach 1947-2017(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2018) Wasilewska, JolantaW 1947 r. z inicjatywy Rektora KUL ks. prof. dra Antoniego Słomkowskiego została utworzona pracownia introligatorska. Pierwszymi introligatorkami były Bolesława Wisińska i s. Róża ze Zgromadzenia Sióstr Przenajświętszego Oblicza. W 1950 r. introligatornia została przeniesiona do budynku Biblioteki Głównej przy ul. Chopina 27, gdzie funkcjonuje do dzisiaj. In 1947 a bookbinding workshop was established on the initiative of the Rector of KUL, Rev. Prof. Antoni Słomkowski. The workshop was located in a small room in the west wing of the University (Aleje Racławickie), next to the academic church. This place was created as there was a need for taking care of the collections belonging to the university library. The books had hitherto not been properly preserved and if the bookbinding service was required, it was provided by private workshops. The first bookbinders were Bolesława Wisińska and Sister Róża from the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Face. In 1950 the bookbinding workshop was transferred to the building of the Central Library (27 Chopina Street), where it is still located now. Over a period of 70 years, the workshop employed 39 people, including six sisters from the Congregation, six graduates of the Art Department at Maria Curie Skłodowska University and 2 people with the degree in Art History at the Catholic University of Lublin. The job of a bookbinder is a specific one, as it combines both physical and mental labour. It is primarily individual work. A bookbinder should be familiar with the structure of a book, a selection of paper products, bookbinding materials, tools, equipment and machines. He should also be able to operate these devices. A bookbinder’s task is to create a usable form of the printed sheets of paper and to professionally prepare them for bookbinding.

- ItemKrzyż jakiego nie znamy(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2018) Czachorowska, Alina; Wasilewska, JolantaW ciągu wieków pojawiało się wiele rodzajów krzyży. Posiadały one różne formy, znaczenie i symbolikę. Throughout centuries a number of crosses appeared. They had different forms, meanings and symbolism. In prehistoric times, a cross was an amulet, it protected against evil powers, but it also symbolized deities. Crosses were usually connected with the cult of nature forces, particularly fire, the sun and life. Crosses were worn, tattooed, drawn and painted on rocks; they were made of various materials: stone wood and metal. Before a cross became a symbol of Christianity, it had been identified with an instrument of torture, as the worst of all. After the death of Christ, a cross became one of the most important symbols of Christianity. A cross as a sign of salvation is also an attribute of numerous saints, whose lives were connected in a special way with it. In addition to the forms of a cross associated with religions, a number of non-religious variations exist. It is the common custom to award people ‘crosses’ for outstanding services stemming from patriotism, scientific and social achievements. In a time of pop culture, a cross also appeared in the compositions of infographics, and even company logos.
- ItemKsięgozbiory Bibliotek Studium Zagadnień Społecznych i Gospodarczych Wsi przy Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Nowakowska, MonikaThe Department of Social and Economic Issues of the Rural Areas at the Catholic University of Lublin, which existed between 1946 and 1949 at the Faculty of Law as well as Social and Economic Sciences at the Catholic University of Lublin, had two collections available to its students. The first one was the Library of the Department of Social and Economic Issues of the Rural Areas, and the other one was the Library of the Scientific Circle for the students of the above-mentioned department. The main initiator of the Library attached to the Department of Social and Economic Issues of the Rural Areas was the director - prof. Czesław Strzeszewski. The selection of library collections was determined by the syllabuses for the courses which were organized in the department. The content of the courses covered mainly administrative, legal, economic and agricultural issues. The department was aimed at educating civil servants, local authorities and cooperative personnel so that they could improve the functioning of rural institutions. The libraries collected books primarily from the field of social sciences (economics, sociology, pedagogy, administration and law), agricultural sciences (agronomy, agricultural engineering, horticulture) and humanities (history, literature, ethnology). The libraries also contained a small percentage of publications in the field of technical and natural sciences. The collection was primarily financed by the Catholic University of Lublin and the Ministry of Education.
- ItemMatka Boska Szkaplerzna w ikonografii(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2016) Wasilewska, JolantaOne of the many representations of the Virgin Mary in the Carmelite art is Our Lady of the Scapular. It is a specific artistic image connected with the liturgy of the altar, which is also the centre around which the life of the brotherhood revolves. The cult of Our Lady of the Scapular, promoted by the Carmelites, is one of the oldest forms of Marian devotion. Over the centuries, it has achieved great popularity in all social circles. The images of Our Lady of the Scapular are represented in either Mary’s bust or her entire figure, sitting or standing, usually with the Child in her arms or on her lap, holding a sceptre in one hand, in the second a scapular or a scapular in both hands; sometimes Infant Jesus holds a scapular. Scapular images also alluded to the Immaculate Conception. If the attribute of the scapular was not painted originally, it was added later or two pieces of cloth were attached to the image (sculptures). When miraculous paintings were covered with a silver or gold dress, scapulars also appeared on a flap piece of metal. The accepted representations of Our Lady of the Scapular were used as ornaments for feretra and banners connected with brotherhoods’ celebrations. Similar images can be found in books, icons and sculptures devoted to the practice of the brotherhood of the scapular.
- ItemNajstarsze dokumenty pergaminowe (XIV-XVII wieku) w zbiorach rękopisów Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej KUL(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2011) Modlińska-Piekarz, AngelikaW referacie zaprezentowano wybór szesnastu dyplomów pergaminowych, znajdujących się w zbiorach rękopiśmiennych Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej KUL. Przedstawiono je w porządku chronologicznym, opatrzono dokładnym opisem fizycznym i regestami. Wykaz uzupełniono uwagami proweniencyjnymi, komentarzem źródłowym i bibliograficznym. Omawiane dokumenty należą do jednych z najcenniejszych i najbardziej interesujących pod względem historycznym dokumentów pergaminowych dotyczących Lublina i Lubelszczyzny od XIV do XVII wieku. Stanowią bogaty materiał źródłowy, istotny do poznania stosunków politycznych, gospodarczych i społecznych ziem dawnego województwa lubelskiego.

- ItemOchweśnik(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Wasilewska, JolantaOchweśnik, also called obraźnik, did paintings, especially religious ones and then sold them going door to door. These works were generally made on paper by woodcut prints. This profession developed especially in the first half of the 19th century in Wielkopolska in Skulsk and Ślesin as well as their surroundings. The discussed traders formed a very hermetic and specific environment with their own jargon: a mixture of Polish, Czech, Russian, Yiddish and German. The itinerant trade of devotional images was conducted in all Polish lands, and it even spread beyond the borders, especially to the East. In addition to paintings, they also sold "medicine".
- ItemPlaton i Arystoteles – bibliofile(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2017) Warda, ElwiraThere is a wealth of information about the existence of libraries in antiquity. Historical sources indicate that already in the 6th century BC two Greek tyrants: Peisistratos of Athens and Polycrates of Samos had small collections. There had to be favourable conditions which allowed for establishing libraries. At the turn of the 4th century BC, sophists came to Athens and prepared citizens for public life. Then a new political structure was formed-democracy, which required education and knowledge from Athenians. There was the increased demand for such a model of education that would shape a human-citizen. At that time in Athens, numerous philosophical and rhetorical schools were founded. The creation of book collections was influenced by various factors. One of the book lovers was Plato, who founded his own school of philosophy, the Academy in Athens around 387 BC. We know that Plato collected and systematically enlarged his book collection, but it seems that his library was not too extensive. Aristotle of Stagira, the creator of the Athenian philosophical school, is considered to have been the first book collector. He held his collection in Lyceum, which was acquired by him around 335 BC.
