- ItemZeus’ Messengers, Angels, and Archangels in Porphyry of Tyre(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Osek, EwaThis article is to reconstruct, for the first time in the existing sholarship, the angelology in Porphyry of Tyre (A.D. 233-305), the Neoplatonist who introduced angels and archangels into philosophy. Angels were not found in any philosophical system before Porphyry. My philological analysis of the select fragments from Porphyry’s writings: Homeric Questions on the Iliad, Letter to Anebo, On Abstinence, Commentary on Plato’s Timaeus, Philosophy from Oracles, and testimonies in Augustine’s City of God allows to make the following conclusions. Porphyry divided the angelic hierarchy into three orders, and included them into the world soul structure, analogically to its trichotomy. He placed the supreme angelic order in the fixed stars, the second archangelic order in the planetary spheres, the third order – the so-called ferrymen – in Earth’s atmosphere. The angels and archangels of the celestial spheres coincide with the cosmic gods, whereas the sublunary „ferrymen” step into daemons’s shoes, the so-called mediators in Plato’s Symposium. The angels deliver messeges from cosmic gods and good daemoms, and this is their main function. Divine message, transmitted and echoed by angels, is received only by some chosen people: priests and prophets, to whom Porphyry referred the Homeric formula „Zeus’ messengers”. In constructing his angelology Porphyry might be influenced by esoteric texts of the A.D. second century he studied: Apollo’s hexametric prophecies, the Chaldean Oracles by Julian the Theurgist, On the Nature attributed to Zoroaster.
The Berlin Hermetic fragments consist of eight fragmentally preserved texts written on the Berlin Papyri (Papyri Berolinenses Graecae 9794 et 17027) from the third century AD (P.Berol. 9794) and the fourth century AD (P.Berol. 17027). Fragments II-VIII (P.Berol. 17027) are significantly deficient. The preserved elements allow, however, to assume that, in some cases, they are excerpts from Hermetic philosophical treatises or untestified versions of Hermetic texts.
Przytoczono krótko też wyniki badań innego tekstu biskupa Petawium – De fabrica mundi, w którym to traktacie o stworzeniu świata pojawiają się ciekawe koncepcje autora o aniołach, dotyczące np. dwudziestu czterech aniołów pierwotnych stworzonych pierwszego dnia. The purpose of this article is to examine how Victorinus of Poetovium (Poetavium), in his Commentarius in Apocalypsim, comments on the passages in the Apocalypse of St John in which the term ‘angel’ – angelus – occurs, and how he interprets the term. First, the frequent occurrence of angels in Scripture, especially in the last book of the Bible, is mentioned. It was recalled, following Augustine of Hippo, that the term angelus denotes a mission and not the nature of the beings so termed. It was also stressed that, for the Church Fathers, angelology was not the most important issue addressed in their writings, and similarly, it is quite rare for scholars to deal with the patristic teaching on angels. A brief introduction is given to Bishop Victorinus as the first Latin exegete and his style of interpretation, especially the importance of alegoresis and typology. All explanations of the term angelus in the extant fragments of Victorinus’ commentary on the Apocalypse are discussed: first those in which angel is taken to mean Elijah or Christ himself, then the good heavenly angels, and finally the evil angels – the devil, the Antichrist – are analysed. The results of a study of another text by the Bishop of Poetovium, De fabrica mundi, are also briefly quoted, in which this treatise on the creation of the world contains interesting concepts by the author about angels, concerning, for example, the twenty-four original angels created on the first day.
- ItemAngelology in the "Letters" of St. Ambrose of Milan(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Czyżewski, Bogdan StanisławIn the letters of St. Ambrose of Milan, one can find many interesting theological topics, including motifs related to angelology. According to the bishop, angels were sent by God. They serve God and people, if only for the reason that man is the most important work of the Creator. Angels play an important role as guardians and protectors of people. Although the angelology contained in the letters of the Bishop of Milan is not one of his key topics, it reveals how he perceived the world of angels. Aniołowie, zdaniem Ambrożego, pełnią ważną rolę stróżów i opiekunów względem ludzi. Chociaż zawarta w listach biskupa Mediolanu angelologia nie należy do tematów wiodących, to jednak w oparciu o zawarte w nich wypowiedzi można odczytać, w jaki sposób postrzegał on świat aniołów.
Hieronymus, Commentarii in Esaiam III 6, 1-3 i 6, 6-7, Vetus Latina 23, s. 307-315; s. 318-320). Otóż, w Iz 6 pojawiają się tajemnicze istoty zwane Serafinami. Po krótkim wprowadzeniu do samego komentarza, prezentujemy w tym artykule zagadnienie Serafinów w Hieronimowej egzegezie w 4 podpunktach: 1) Etymologia terminu Serafin (Serafini = incendentes, comburentes, ardor, incendium, principium oris eorum); 2) Sześć skrzydeł jako jedna z cech dystynktywnych Serafina (dwoma zakrywają twarz Boga (może swoją?), drugą parą skrzydeł zakrywają stopy Boga (a może swoje?), trzecia para zaś służy im do latania); 3) Obowiązki i zadania Serafinów (celebracja świętości Boga oraz są posyłane z różnymi zleceniami); 4) Alegoryczne rozumienie frazy Serafin (Serafiny mogą symbolizować: Stary i Nowy Testament, służebne moce niebieskie lub jakiś cień prawdy odnoszącej się do przyszłej niewoli). In the patristic era, the Book of Isaiah was of great interest to both Greek and Latin exegetes. St. Jerome of Stridon explained the prophet Isaiah many times. The subject of this article is the passages from book 3 of Jerome’s The Commentary on Isaiah, in which he analyzes, among others, Is 6:1-3 and Is 6:6-7 (cf. Hieronymus, Commentarii in Esaiam III 6, 1-3 and 6,6-7, Vetus Latina 23, p. 307-315, 318-320). Ergo, in Is 6 appear mysterious beings called Seraphim. After a short introduction to the commentary itself, in this article I present the issue of the Seraphim in Jerome’s exegesis in 4 subsections: (1) The etymology of the term Seraphim (Seraphim = incendentes, comburentes, ardor, incendium, principium oris eorum); (2) Six wings as one of the distinctive features of the Seraphim: (two cover the face of God (maybe theirs?), the second pair of wings covers God’s feet (or maybe theirs?), and the third pair is used for flying); (3) Duties and tasks of the Seraphim (celebration of the holiness of God and being sent with various commissions); (4) Allegorical meaning of the phrase Seraphim (Seraphim can symbolize: Old and New Testaments, serving celestial powers, or some shadow of truth relating to future captivity).
- ItemAnastazy Synaita, Homilia na temat Psalmu VI(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Piasecki, DariuszHomilia Anastazego Synaity na temat Psalmu VI utrzymana jest w konwencji pedagogiki chrześcijańskiej. Kaznodzieja przypomina słuchaczom o grzechu, zachęca do nawrócenia. Temu procesowi towarzyszy świadoma praca nad wadami, często łzy żalu oraz poprawa życia i naprawa zerwanych relacji z Bogiem i ludźmi. Anastasius of Synai's homily on Psalm VI is maintained in the convention of Christian pedagogy. The preacher reminds his listeners of sin, encourages them to repent. This process is accompanied by conscious work on flaws, often tears of regret and improvement of life and repair of broken relationships with God and people. The fruit of spiritual effort understood in this way is the complete conversion of the sinner, forgiveness of sins and preparation for death, which is an inevitable stage towards eternal life.

Relatively 1 Cor 11:10 received the most attention from those of the early Church writers who dealt more extensively with the „woman’s question”. The question of the veil for women was analyzed in the social, religious and cultural contexts of antiquity. St. Paul's text encouraged Christians to seek stricte religious arguments to justify the practice of wearing the veil by women, placing it in the context of a theological choice. Ancient Christian writings confirm this view, but many authors choose the path of reflection impregnated with elements of angelological doctrine. However, there was no shortage of other interpretative contexts. In the ante-Nicene Fathers, it was possible to discover the hermeneutical links of the Pauline text with Gen 6:1-4. The range of „angels” referred to in the Pauline pericope was quite broad. They were identified not only with celestial beings but also with the fallen angels, the celebrants in the liturgy and its participants. It could also have been the strangers who observed the rites. In the later period, the issues were different. In reality, the doctrine of the Church and the social reasons, customs, as well as practices in liturgical assemblies have been consolidated. The veil became a symbol that invoked a positive image of women. The imposition of the veil (velatio) became synonymous with the consecration to God by the virgins.

- ItemThe Angels are among us. A Study of the Writings of Paulinus of Nola(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Wysocki, MarcinPaulinus of Nola (c. 355-431) is undoubtedly one of the most interesting yet least known figures of early Christianity. Born into a wealthy senatorial family from Bordeaux, Paulinus gave up wealth, a career as a civil servant and the practice of secular poetry to follow St Felix on the path of Christian faith. One of its elements was the belief in the existence of angels. In the case of Paulinus of Nola, this belief took on a very concrete expression. The aim of this article is to show, on the basis of an analysis of the surviving letters and songs, the angelology of St Paulinus, which took on above all a pastoral aspect and showed very concrete manifestations of the action of angels for the benefit of the human beings. Feliksa i podążać drogą chrześcijańskiej wiary.
- ItemAniołowie (dobrzy i źli) w alegorycznej interpretacji Ksiąg Rodzaju, Wyjścia i Kapłańskiej w homiliach św. Saint Caesarius of Arles (470-543), a great preacher, priest, lover of Sacred Scripture, organizer of the Church and monastic life in Gaul, left us writings that have not lost their value to this day. His teaching on angels (good and bad) based on the allegorical exegesis of the books of Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus can serve today’s believers. The author shows the blessed fruits of human cooperation with angels and, at the same time, the danger of submitting to temptations cleverly suggested by the devil. Caesarius’ exegesis is Christ-Centered, the author shows the unity of Bible; the Old Testament is fulfilled in the New Testament. The aim of this article is to present Caesarius’ views on the good and bad angels on a base of his homilies in which he uses allegorical interpretation of the above mentioned books of the Scripture.

- ItemEpiphanius of Salamis' Polemic with Angelological Heresies(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Drzyżdżyk, Szymon; Gilski, MarekThe article presents the polemic of Epiphanius of Salamis with angelological heresies. Its purpose is therefore not only to present errors but is also an apology of correct faith. The article consists of four parts: the first concerns the existence of angels, the second focuses on their origins, the third deals with the question of their operation, and the fourth analyzes the role of angels in the afterlife of man. The most important conclusions from the analysis include: 1. Angelology was of interest not only in pre-Christian heresies (derived from Judaism) but also in heresies that emerged from Christianity. However, this topic does not appear when discussing the Greek schools of philosophy. 2. The author of Panarion does not always clearly present errors related to angelology. He himself points out that it was often not easy for him to precisely indicate the nature of a given heresy. 3. Epiphanius criticizes the angelological heresies on the basis of biblical and rational arguments, undermining their sources and reducing some theses to absurdity. He also uses the argument from authority, referring to the fathers (Clement, Irenaeus, Hippolytus). Do najważniejszych wniosków płynących z analiz należą. 1.

- ItemAngelology in the Writings of Justin Martyr, Tatian and Athenagoras(Wydawnictwo KUL, 2023) Misiarczyk, LeszekThe aim of the study was to analyze the texts of Justin, Tatian and Athenagoras on the subject of angels. I do this on three points: the creation of angels by God/Logos as free beings (1); the tasks of angels (2) the sin of angels and the final annihilation of demons/evil angels. All three authors emphasize that God created angels and people as free beings, and therefore also responsible for their actions, and entrusted them with the care of people and his creation. However, some angels were deceived by the first angel (Tatian) or by the hostile power (Athenagoras), who let himself be carried away by vain glory, broke all ties of dependence on God and wanted to appropriate the deity. He turned into a demon and his followers into a host of demons. Athenagoras combines the concept of Tatian and Justin, stating that the power/spirit to whom God entrusted the management of matter and its forms, insulted its own essence and the power entrusted to it, and the angels from the first vault sinned by intercourse with women, which gave birth to giants. Tatian’s and Athenagoras’ concept of the sin of angels is definitely less mythical than that of Justin. According to Tatian and Athenagoras, this state of fallen angels is irreversible.
